Dimensions alone do not guarantee a good preview. Keep the file within the destination’s size limits, expose the image and metadata to preview crawlers, and inspect the actual card after publishing.
Recommended Open Graph image size
Make the image 1200 pixels wide by 630 pixels high for a broadly compatible starting point. This canvas is close to a 1.91:1 ratio. Wix recommends these dimensions for Open Graph images, and a July 2026 secondary guide describes them as a cross-platform default. The Open Graph Protocol defines how image metadata is represented; it does not require one universal pixel size.
LinkedIn’s published minimum is 1200 × 627 pixels, also at about 1.91:1. A 1200 × 630 image is six pixels taller than that minimum. It is a reasonable near-match, but the available guidance does not establish that every platform renders the same image identically.

Platform dimensions and file-size guidance
Use the general canvas as a starting point, then account for the destination’s published limits and the degree of certainty behind them. Requirements and recommendations can change, so check the platform’s current guidance when exact rendering or compliance matters.

Prepare an image that survives cropping and compression
A social card can be resized or cropped by its destination. Keep the main subject, logo, and any essential text away from the extreme edges, and review the result at the card size rather than only on the full design canvas. The available guidance supports a near-identical ratio for the general default and LinkedIn, but it does not promise identical rendering across services.
Choose a sensible file size
File limits are platform-specific, not an Open Graph-wide rule. If you need to share the same image across destinations, compress it with the strictest target in mind. In particular, Wix’s WhatsApp guidance says the preview displays an image only when it is under 300 KB. Recheck the live result: a threshold reported by one guide is not a guarantee that every client will show the card.
Keep text legible
Open Graph metadata includes alternative text, but that is not a replacement for readable text within the graphic. If the image contains a headline or other essential wording, make it large enough to survive thumbnail display and cropping. Avoid using the alt text as a caption; describe the image’s content instead.

Add Open Graph image metadata
Put the tags in the HTML source delivered to preview crawlers. Use an absolute HTTPS image address that can be fetched without a login. A path such as /images/share-card.jpg is root-relative; the og:image value should instead resolve to a complete address beginning with https://.
The Open Graph Protocol supports image URL, width, height, type, secure URL, and alt text properties. Its documentation says: “If the page specifies an og:image it should specify og:image:alt.” For a page using a 1200 × 630 image, a minimal set of tags looks like this:

Declare the dimensions that the image actually has, not merely the dimensions you intended when exporting it. Add type or secure URL metadata when applicable to your implementation.
Order multiple images deliberately
The protocol permits multiple og:image values. Its documentation says the first tag takes precedence in a conflict, so put the preferred image first and keep that image’s structured properties adjacent to its declaration. Multiple values are not a substitute for testing which preview a destination selects.

Make the page and image available to crawlers
A correct tag is useful only if a preview crawler can read it and retrieve the image. Before debugging image dimensions, check what the crawler can actually access.
- Use a publicly fetchable HTTPS image URL. Do not require a session, password, or special authorization to retrieve the file.
- Serve the tags in the page HTML. Metadata added only after client-side JavaScript runs may be missed by preview bots.
- Check access controls and bot protections. Ensure they do not block the crawler from the page or image.
- Match the declared dimensions to the file. A mismatch can make diagnosis harder even when the image otherwise loads.
Verify the preview after publishing
Do not treat the presence of tags in your source as proof that a destination displays the intended card. Preview caches can retain an older image after you update a page. Wix points to Facebook’s debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector as tools for checking and refreshing previews. After an update, use the destination’s available inspector or debugger; where appropriate, a changed image URL can help distinguish a new asset from a cached one.
For Slack and Discord, the reviewed technical guide did not find public numeric embed-image dimensions. Use the general default, then inspect an actual preview in the client and context that matter to you. If X’s exact card crop is important, consult its current developer guidance and test rather than treating secondary size suggestions as official specifications.

The preview is blank or shows no image
- Confirm that
og:imagecontains an absolute HTTPS URL, not a relative path. - Open the image URL without being logged in. Check that the file is available to an unauthenticated crawler and is not blocked by access controls or bot protection.
- Inspect the HTML delivered to the crawler. If the tag exists only after client-side JavaScript executes, it may not be seen.
- Check the destination’s inspector or debugger, when available, to see whether it fetched the page and image successfully.
The old image still appears
Preview caches may outlast a page update. Refresh the URL through the destination’s available inspector or debugger. If appropriate, publish the changed asset at a changed image URL so it is distinguishable from the cached version.
The image looks cropped, small, or wrong on one platform
Compare the actual preview with the target platform’s current guidance rather than assuming a single universal crop. For LinkedIn, compare against its published 1200 × 627 minimum; for Facebook-oriented recommendations, note Wix’s stated practical minimum of 600 × 315 pixels. Keep essential content away from the edges, and verify X cards directly if exact cropping matters. Slack and Discord do not have numeric dimensions established by the reviewed guide.

Check file size and accessibility before changing the canvas. LinkedIn Help publishes a 5 MB maximum, Wix relays an 8 MB maximum for Facebook-oriented guidance, and Wix says WhatsApp previews display images only under 300 KB. Those figures apply to their respective guidance, not universally. Compress the asset for the destination you care about and inspect its preview again.

Does the Open Graph Protocol require 1200 × 630 pixels?

Should I use JPG, PNG, or WebP?
