For most pages, export a 1200×630-pixel PNG, host it at a stable public URL, and point your page’s og:image tag to that file. Use a browser editor for occasional cards; use an API or framework route when every page needs a different, automatically rendered image.
What an Open Graph image generator does
The Open Graph protocol lets a web page become a rich object in a social graph. An OG generator turns your title, description, brand colors and imagery into a share card, then exports an image that social crawlers can fetch. The generator itself does not make the preview appear: your page must publish the image URL in its HTML head, and the image must remain reachable without a login.
Generators generally fall into three groups:

Use the correct OG image size
Start with 1200×630 pixels (an aspect ratio of about 1.91:1). This is the documented default used by og-image.org and Vercel’s OG examples. Keep important text and logos away from the edges because networks may crop or mask previews differently. Export PNG for crisp text and transparency; choose JPEG when a photographic card is substantially smaller, and WebP when your delivery stack and target crawlers support it.
- Use a high-contrast title that remains readable on a phone-sized preview.
- Keep one visual hierarchy: brand or logo, page title, then optional category or author.
- Do not put essential information only in tiny text; the image is often displayed below 600 pixels wide.
- Use the same dimensions for a template family so previews do not jump between pages.
Create a one-off OG image in a browser

- Choose a 1200×630 template. Select a layout with enough room for your longest likely title.
- Replace the content. Enter the page title and, if useful, a short description, author or date.
- Set visual variables. Adjust background, text and accent colors; check contrast in the live preview.
- Download the PNG. Name it predictably, such as
pricing-og.png, and upload it to a public static path. - Copy the generated tags. Paste them into the page’s
<head>, then replace example domains with your production domain.
Before publishing, open the image URL in a private browser window. If it redirects to a login page, requires a cookie, or returns an HTML error instead of an image, social crawlers will not render it reliably.
Generate images dynamically for many pages
Hosted template services can mark layers as dynamic and substitute values through URL parameters or a POST JSON request. This is useful for product catalogs, author pages and article archives: one approved design can render thousands of title and image combinations. Check whether generated URLs are immutable or can change when a template is edited; immutable URLs are safer for long-lived social caches.
When selecting a service, compare one-off editing speed, template quality, client-side privacy, URL/API support, image permanence, export formats, font and layout controls, preview tools and total cost. There is no independent cross-provider engagement, click-through or speed benchmark establishing a universal winner, so verify the actual preview on the networks your audience uses.
Build an OG image with code
Vercel’s official @vercel/og uses Satori and Resvg to convert a supported subset of HTML and CSS into PNG. Its ImageResponse defaults to 1200×630, emits PNG, and adds immutable cache headers. It supports TTF, OTF and WOFF fonts, common flexbox layouts and custom fonts, but not advanced CSS grid layouts. Vercel documents a 500KB bundle limit, so keep fonts and assets small.

}Keep the route deterministic: sanitize user-provided text, set a fallback title, and avoid fetching arbitrary remote assets during rendering. Allow crawlers to reach the route in robots.txt. If your framework uses a metadata helper, point openGraph.images at the route’s absolute URL.
Add the image to your HTML metadata
Publish an absolute URL, not a relative path. The core tag is:

Production checklist
- Export at 1200×630 unless a channel-specific requirement calls for another canvas.
- Use an HTTPS, absolute, publicly reachable URL that returns the correct image MIME type.
- Keep filenames and route responses stable so social caches do not retain obsolete assets unexpectedly.
- Ensure dynamic endpoints respond quickly and do not require session cookies or browser-only JavaScript.
- Permit the image route in
robots.txtwhen your framework recommends it. - After deployment, inspect the rendered card on each target network; metadata can be cached independently of your page.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect previews
The preview shows no image
Check that og:image is in the server-rendered head, uses an absolute HTTPS URL and returns an image rather than a redirect or HTML error. Test the URL while logged out.
An old image remains
Social platforms cache fetched images. Change the asset URL (for example, by using a versioned filename) after confirming the new file is live, then request a fresh scrape using the network’s own debugging tool.
The image is cropped or text is cut off
Re-open the source at 1200×630, move critical content toward the center and reduce title length or font size. Do not assume one network’s crop matches another’s.
The code route fails to render
Replace unsupported CSS grid or browser-only APIs with flexbox and supported properties. Confirm font files are TTF, OTF or WOFF and that the deployed bundle stays under the documented 500KB limit.

Dynamic values are missing
Log the final route URL, provide defaults for absent query parameters, escape user text and verify that your CMS data is available in the route’s runtime. A crawler may request the image without the same cookies a normal browser has.

Can I use an OG image without a generator?
Yes. Design a 1200×630 file in any image editor, host it publicly and add the same Open Graph tags manually.

Should every page have a unique image?
Unique images help distinguish shared links, but a consistent fallback image is valid for pages without custom artwork. Dynamic routes make uniqueness practical at scale.
Is PNG required?
No. PNG is a dependable default for text-heavy cards; JPEG or WebP can be appropriate when your delivery and crawler support are confirmed.
