A dependable starting point is a 1200 × 630 pixel (about 1.91:1) PNG or JPEG, with the headline or subject in a central safe area and an absolute HTTPS URL in og:image. The exact card can still vary by platform, crop, cache, and device.
What is an OG image?
The Open Graph Protocol defines og:image as the image URL that represents a web object in a link preview. When someone shares a page, a crawler may fetch that URL and combine the image with the page title, description, and destination URL. The image is a representation of the page, not a screenshot guarantee and not a promise that every network will render an identical card.
The protocol also documents optional properties for image dimensions, type, secure URL, and alternative text: og:image:width, og:image:height, og:image:type, og:image:secure_url, and og:image:alt. See the Open Graph Protocol documentation for the property definitions.

| Pattern | What the card communicates | Best fit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Article or guide card | A readable title, a small category label, and quiet brand treatment | How-to articles, explainers, documentation | Too much text becomes unreadable in a small preview |
| Product or project card | The actual subject of the destination, paired with a concise identifying title | Product pages, case studies, portfolios | Replacing the subject with an unrelated site logo |
| Minimal brand card | One focal element on a strong color or simple graphic | Abstract topics, announcements, landing pages | The destination’s subject may be unclear without supporting text |
| Template-driven card | A repeatable layout with variable title, image, and section label | Publishing teams with many pages | Long titles, narrow screens, and unusual subjects can break the template |
Example 1: article or guide card
Use a short, specific headline such as “Open Graph Image Examples.” Put a small “Web publishing” label above it, then reserve the remaining space for a simple illustration or restrained background. The headline should still identify the article when the image is reduced to a thumbnail. Keep the logo small enough that it supports, rather than competes with, the title.
Example 2: product or project card
Show the product, interface, or project that the link leads to. Pair the visual with a short name such as “Checkout redesign” or “API monitoring dashboard.” A page-specific subject is more informative than a generic company mark. Google Search Central’s image guidance separately advises against generic images such as a site logo for its image use cases; that guidance should not be treated as a universal rule for every social network, but it is a useful reason to keep the destination relevant.
Example 3: minimal brand card
Choose one strong background color, one focal shape or object, and a restrained title. This works for a topic such as a conference announcement or a conceptual essay where a literal photograph would be misleading. Check that the visual still signals the destination’s subject without relying on the surrounding post text.
Example 4: reusable publishing template
Define fixed zones for a section label, variable title, subject image, and brand mark. Test the longest realistic title, not only the sample title. Create variants for light and dark artwork, and inspect mobile crops before adopting the template across an entire archive.

What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200 × 630 pixels is a broadly useful starting canvas, approximately 1.91:1. OG Image Design presents that size as a cross-platform recommendation in its July 2026 sizing guide, not as a universal platform standard or a study result. The guide notes that platform ratios differ and that an X large-card view may crop a 1.91:1 source. Confirm current limits for each network you target.
Keep essential content inside a central safe region. OG Image Design suggests treating roughly 87% of the canvas as a starting safe area because platforms can crop differently. Do not put a critical word, logo, or face against an edge. Preview the actual card at reduced size on the target platform.
- Export PNG or JPEG for broad compatibility. The sizing guide cautions that SVG may fail with some crawlers.
- Use a raster image that is publicly reachable without a login, cookie challenge, or referrer requirement.
- Serve it from an absolute HTTPS URL and return the correct image content type.
- Keep text large, high-contrast, and short enough to survive thumbnail display.
Build the metadata for an example card
Place Open Graph tags in the page’s <head>. Use the final canonical image URL, not a local path or a relative URL:
<meta property="og:title" content="Open Graph Image Examples">
<meta property="og:description" content="Design patterns, sizing guidance, and implementation examples for social-sharing previews.">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/guides/open-graph-images">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/open-graph-images.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/png">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Illustrated preview of Open Graph image design patterns">
The protocol documents the width, height, and alt properties. The Open Graph tags guide recommends an absolute HTTPS URL, while the OG Image Design sizing guide recommends raster formats for compatibility. Write alt text as a factual description of what is visible, not as an advertising slogan. If the image is purely decorative, follow the accessibility policy of your site and platform rather than inventing a marketing caption.

A practical design workflow
- Identify the destination. Decide whether the card should explain an article, show a product, or signal a campaign. Choose an image that is specific to that page.
- Set the canvas. Start at 1200 × 630 pixels. Establish an inner safe area and keep the headline, logo, and focal subject inside it.
- Choose one hierarchy. Give the title, subject, or focal graphic a clear first reading. Do not compete with several equal-sized messages.
- Check small sizes. View the export as a small thumbnail and on a narrow phone screen. Remove detail that disappears or turns into visual noise.
- Export and host. Save a PNG or JPEG, publish it at a stable HTTPS URL, and verify that an anonymous request receives the image.
- Add and inspect metadata. Set
og:imageand the optional dimensions, type, and alt properties. After publishing, use the target network’s preview or debugger to see what its crawler actually cached.
Why an OG image may not appear as expected
The tag is missing or malformed
Inspect the rendered HTML, not only a template file. Confirm that the property is exactly og:image, the URL is absolute, and quotation marks and angle brackets are balanced.
The image URL is inaccessible
Open the URL in a private browser window and request it without session cookies. Fix DNS, TLS, authentication, robots or firewall rules, redirects, and non-image responses. A crawler must be able to fetch the final raster file.
A stale card is being shown
Platforms cache metadata and images independently. A corrected tag may not replace an already fetched card immediately. Use the platform’s official preview/debug tool where available, request a refresh, and use a new image URL when you intentionally need cache busting.
The crop removes the headline
Move important content inward, shorten the title, or create a platform-specific variant. The 1200 × 630 canvas is a practical baseline, not a guarantee against every crop.

The image is blank or the wrong format
Check the HTTP status, Content-Type, file bytes, and image dimensions. Replace an SVG with PNG or JPEG when a crawler does not render it, and remove transformations that require client-side JavaScript.
The preview differs between networks
That is expected: crawlers have different fetch schedules, caches, crop rules, and supported properties. Treat the card as network-specific output and inspect it in every channel that matters to your publication.

If you need to inspect how a page renders before creating or reviewing its sharing artwork, ScreenshotNeo provides a direct screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can call its take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf MCP tools.
Use the API to capture the published page and compare the rendered hero, title, and metadata-driven context at a chosen viewport. The API supports full-page or selector captures, device presets, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and PDFs.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. A minimal cURL request is:

Pre-publication checklist
- The image represents the specific destination, not just the company.
- The source is a readable PNG or JPEG at an absolute HTTPS URL.
- The essential content sits inside the central safe area.
- The page includes
og:image; dimensions, type, and meaningful alt text are correct where used. - The URL works without authentication and returns the expected status, content type, and dimensions.
- The preview has been checked at thumbnail size and in each important target network.
- You have a plan for cache refreshes when the artwork changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an OG image replace the page’s featured image?
Not necessarily. Your CMS may use a featured image for on-site layouts while og:image selects the image intended for shared-link metadata. They can be the same file, but they serve different rendering contexts.
Can I use several og:image tags?
The protocol permits image properties, but platform selection behavior can differ. If one image is the intended default, publish one unambiguous first image and verify any additional-image strategy against the networks you use.
Should an OG image contain text?
Short, legible text is useful for article and template cards. Keep it supplemental: the page title and description remain the accessible, searchable text, and excessive copy will be difficult to read in a reduced preview.
