An Open Graph image debugger fetches a web page the way a social platform crawler does, reads the Open Graph tags in the document head, and shows the image and other metadata that a preview can use. Start with og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url; then verify that the image URL is reachable to the crawler and request a fresh scrape in the platform’s own debugger. This separates a metadata mistake from an image-delivery problem or an old cached preview.
What an Open Graph image debugger actually checks
Open Graph (OG) data is HTML metadata, not a setting inside a debugger. Your page places tags in its <head>, and a crawler reads those tags when it builds a link preview. The og:image value is the URL of the image representing the page. A debugger retrieves the page, displays the fields it found, and often provides a preview or warnings.
The Open Graph protocol defines four basic properties:
og:title— the object’s title.og:type— the object type, such as an article or website.og:image— an image URL for the object.og:url— the canonical URL of the object.
These tags must be present in the server-delivered HTML head. Adding an image in a page builder’s visual editor, or setting a featured image in a CMS without an OG integration, does not guarantee that a crawler will see og:image.

Inspect the tags before opening a platform debugger
View the raw response
Open the page in a browser, choose View page source, and search for og:. Source view is preferable to inspecting only the live DOM because client-side JavaScript may add or alter elements after the initial response, while some crawlers do not execute that JavaScript in the same way.
A minimal set looks like this:
<meta property="og:title" content="Example article">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/example.webp">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/example-article">
Check the image URL itself
Copy the exact content value from og:image and open it directly. Confirm that it returns an image rather than an HTML error page, login screen, redirect loop, or consent wall. The URL should be absolute and use the same public hostname that a crawler can reach. A URL that works only in your logged-in browser can produce “no image” in a debugger.
Check structured image properties
The protocol supports additional tags:
og:image:type— the image MIME type.og:image:widthandog:image:height— pixel dimensions.og:image:alt— descriptive alternative text.
The specification says that if a page specifies og:image, it should specify og:image:alt. Write alt text that describes the visual content; do not use it as a caption, sales slogan, or keyword list.
Use a debugger to identify the failure type
1. Metadata error
The debugger shows an empty, wrong, or incomplete field. Fix the HTML output, purge any page or CDN cache that serves the old head, and inspect the source again. Check for spelling, quotation marks, and tags accidentally placed in the document body.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
2. Crawler or image-access error
The tags are correct, but the preview cannot fetch the page or image. Look for authentication, IP restrictions, robots or firewall rules, TLS certificate problems, hotlink protection, redirects, and server responses that vary by user agent. Review the image request in your server logs and make sure it returns the intended bytes with an image content type.
3. Stale preview
The current source is correct, but the platform still shows an earlier image. Use that platform’s official debugger or re-scrape control to request a new fetch. Re-scraping updates the platform’s stored representation; it does not guarantee that every already-published post, message, or downstream cache will change.
Duplicate tags and image ordering
Multiple og:image tags are legal when you intentionally offer several images, but duplicates generated by a theme and a plug-in are a common source of surprises. The protocol gives the first value in document order preference when values conflict. Put the intended image first and remove accidental duplicates. Do not assume every consumer implements the complete selection process identically, so one canonical tag is safest when you need a predictable result.
Apply the same rule to repeated titles, types, or URLs: inspect the raw order, identify which component emitted each tag, and keep one authoritative source whenever possible.

Why a debugger can show “No image in preview”
- The tag is absent: the template never emits
og:image, or it is added only after JavaScript runs. - The URL is relative or malformed: use a complete HTTPS URL and verify escaping of query characters.
- The response is blocked: a WAF, basic authentication, geo restriction, or rate limit rejects the crawler.
- The URL returns the wrong content: a redirect, HTML error document, or unsupported response is returned instead of the image.
- The page is cached: the debugger fetched an older head or image URL. Change the source, purge the relevant cache, and request a fresh scrape.
- There are conflicting tags: an earlier
og:imagewins according to protocol ordering.
Do not treat a debugger warning as proof that a platform’s current image-size, file-size, or format thresholds are a particular number. Those requirements can change, and the available protocol material does not establish current Meta limits. Follow the platform’s current documentation for limits after the URL and metadata are known to be correct.
A repeatable debugging procedure
- Record the intended result. Write down the canonical page URL and the exact image URL you expect to appear.
- Inspect page source. Confirm the four basic properties and note their order.
- Validate the image request. Open the image URL without login cookies and check the returned status, content type, and redirects.
- Review image properties. Add width, height, MIME type, and descriptive alt text where your implementation supports them.
- Remove conflicts. Find duplicate tags from SEO plug-ins, themes, server-side templates, or head-management scripts.
- Check crawler access. Examine firewall, authentication, robots, TLS, DNS, and rate-limit behavior for anonymous requests.
- Run the relevant platform debugger. Compare its fetched fields and preview with your source view.
- Correct and recheck. Deploy the fix, purge caches that serve the page or image, then run the debugger again.
- Verify a new share. Test a newly composed post or message; an existing share may retain its own cached preview.
Platform debugger choices and their limits
| Tool category | What it is useful for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Official platform debugger | Shows what that platform’s crawler fetched and may offer a fresh-scrape action. | Access requirements and interface can change; results apply to that platform. |
| Generic OG inspector | Quickly displays tags and a cross-platform-style preview. | It may not reproduce a specific network’s crawler, cache, or selection behavior. |
| Browser source and direct image request | Confirms the HTML and image are publicly delivered. | It does not reveal a platform’s stored preview or crawler-specific cache. |
The Open Graph protocol documentation identifies Facebook’s Object Debugger as an official parser and debugger. Treat any third-party preview as a convenience check, not as proof that every network will render the same result.
“How do I clear Facebook OG cache?”
First correct the page source and image response. Then submit the URL to Facebook’s official debugger and use its re-scrape function if available to your account. Compare the fetched tags with the deployed source. A successful re-scrape changes what Facebook fetches next; it cannot rewrite a preview already embedded in a message or post, and other platforms maintain separate caches.
“Is the Twitter Card Validator still working?”
Do not base a workflow on an assumed validator interface or availability. Inspect the Open Graph (and, where applicable, platform-specific card) tags yourself, then use the destination platform’s currently available developer or sharing-debug tool. Interfaces and access conditions change, so verify the current tool before documenting it for a team.

Automate page and image inspection
For a site with many templates, add an automated check that downloads the public HTML, parses the first occurrences of the four required properties, resolves the image URL, and records the HTTP status and content type. Run it after template releases and for a sample of localized pages. Keep the checker separate from a platform debugger: your test proves what your server returns, while the platform tool proves what that network stored.
When you need repeatable screenshots of a rendered page for a visual QA record, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through an API. It is a rendering and capture service, not a replacement for reading OG tags or a platform’s own cache.

ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Cache intentionally: use a stable image URL for stable content, and change the URL when the image genuinely changes so downstream caches can distinguish versions.
- Keep images reachable: avoid expiring signed URLs unless the crawler can fetch them during its scrape window.
- Watch redirects: a short, deterministic redirect chain is easier for crawlers than several conditional redirects.
- Separate checks: a fast HTML metadata test can run on every deploy; full rendered captures and platform debugger checks can run on a schedule or when a template changes.
- Control capture cost: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots and does not bill the listed failure and cache-hit cases; use its TTL caching, async jobs, bulk capture, and usage API when those match your workload.
FAQ
Does og:image upload the image anywhere?
No. It declares a URL. Your server or image host must deliver the file when a crawler requests that URL.
Should og:image:alt repeat the page title?
No. Describe the important visual content in the image. The protocol treats it as alternative text, not a caption.
Will fixing the tag update every old share?
No. Each platform and message surface can retain its own cached preview. Re-scrape the relevant platform and test a new share.

Can I use several OG images for different platforms?
You can declare multiple images, but the protocol gives the first value in document order preference during conflicts. Use platform-specific metadata only when you understand that platform’s selection behavior; otherwise keep one authoritative image first.
Why does source view differ from the browser inspector?
The inspector shows the post-JavaScript DOM. Source view shows the initial HTML response, which is the safer baseline because crawler rendering behavior varies.
