That ratio is a practical, widely used recommendation—not a requirement imposed by the Open Graph Protocol. The protocol defines the og:image URL and related metadata, while social networks decide how previews are cropped and displayed.
What an Open Graph aspect ratio means
Aspect ratio compares an image’s width with its height. Divide the width by the height to calculate it:
aspect ratio = width ÷ height
- A 1200 × 630 image is 1200 ÷ 630 = 1.9047, normally rounded to 1.91:1.
- A 1200 × 1200 image is 1:1, a square.
- A 1200 × 675 image is 16:9, or about 1.78:1.
For an Open Graph (OG) image, the ratio describes the source file you provide in og:image. It does not force every platform to show that exact shape. Preview cards have their own containers, so a service can crop, letterbox or resize your artwork before displaying it.
What the Open Graph Protocol actually requires
The Open Graph Protocol documentation defines og:image as the URL of an image representing the page’s object. It also lists optional image properties for dimensions and alternative text:

The specification does not state that every OG image must be 1.91:1. Treat 1200 × 630 as a compatibility-oriented design choice rather than a protocol rule.
Why 1200 × 630 is the usual recommendation
The current OG Image Size Guide recommends 1200 × 630 pixels as a broadly useful cross-platform size. The Facebook OG Image Guide also lists 1200 × 630 (1.91:1) as recommended and 600 × 315 as its minimum. These are platform-oriented recommendations, not guarantees that every network will render an identical preview.
Working at 1200 × 630 gives text and logos enough physical pixels to remain legible when a service creates a smaller card. It also leaves room for modest cropping without immediately cutting into the main subject, provided the composition has a safe area.
When another size makes sense
- Square artwork (1:1): useful when the same source must also serve profile grids or square-first destinations. Keep important content away from the edges because a square image may be cropped to a wider card.
- 16:9 artwork: reasonable for video-derived graphics or an existing 1920 × 1080 workflow, but it is slightly shorter than 1.91:1 and may lose more at the top or bottom in a wide OG card.
- Smaller 600 × 315 artwork: identified as a Facebook minimum by og-image.org. It can work for lightweight assets, but 1200 × 630 provides more room for downscaling and high-density displays.
Calculate a matching height or width
Use the target ratio when your design system starts with a different dimension. For the 1.91:1 recommendation:

- Given a width:
height = width ÷ 1.91. At 1600 pixels wide, the height is about 838 pixels. - Given a height:
width = height × 1.91. At 800 pixels high, the width is about 1528 pixels.
Round to whole pixels, then verify the final exported file rather than relying on a design-tool label. A file named “1200×630” can still contain a different canvas if it was exported with padding or an unintended crop.

Compose the image for unpredictable crops
Keep a central safe area
Place the headline, logo, faces and other irreplaceable details near the center. Leave breathing room around all four edges. Avoid putting a URL or legal text flush against a border: a platform crop can remove it even when the source ratio is correct.
Design for reduction
Preview the artwork at the small size where it will normally appear. Use strong contrast, a simple background and a short headline. Thin strokes, long paragraphs and low-contrast gray text disappear when the image is reduced.
Do not assume one preview shape
The sizing guide notes that platforms may crop images to fit their own preview containers. Test the actual URLs on the networks that matter to your audience. A 1.91:1 source reduces the chance of severe mismatch, but it cannot make platform rendering identical.

Choose useful alternative text
The protocol describes og:image:alt as “A description of what is in the image (not a caption).” Write a concise visual description, such as “A blue diagram showing how browser caching works,” rather than repeating the article title or adding promotional copy.
Export and delivery checklist
- Confirm the intrinsic dimensions are 1200 × 630 pixels (or document why you chose another ratio).
- Use a widely served format such as JPEG or PNG; keep transparency only when the receiving platform supports it as expected.
- Give the file a stable, canonical URL. Avoid changing the bytes at the same URL without a cache-busting plan.
- Check that the server returns a successful image response, not an HTML error page with an image extension.

og:image:width,og:image:heightand descriptiveog:image:altwhen those values are known. - Keep the subject and text inside the safe area and inspect the result at thumbnail size.
Validate the result and troubleshoot failures
The preview shows an old image
Social crawlers cache fetched images and metadata. Make sure the source URL now returns the intended file, then use the relevant platform’s preview or scrape-refresh tool. If you change the asset repeatedly, publish a versioned filename or query strategy that your cache policy permits.
The image is cropped badly
Check the receiving platform’s container rather than only the source file. Move critical elements toward the center, reduce edge-to-edge text and test a second preview size. A correct 1.91:1 ratio cannot prevent a platform-specific crop.
The image is missing
Inspect the page source, not just the rendered DOM, and verify that the tag uses property='og:image' with a complete HTTPS URL. Request the image in an incognito browser or with an HTTP client to confirm it is publicly reachable, returns an image content type and does not require authentication.
Text looks soft or unreadable
Start from a larger, clean 1200 × 630 source, increase contrast and avoid very thin type. Do not enlarge a smaller 600 × 315 file and expect it to gain detail; export the artwork at the target dimensions instead.

The protocol fields seem ignored
og:image:width and og:image:height describe the source; they do not dictate the preview box. The platform can still resize or crop. Treat those fields as metadata that helps a crawler understand the asset, not as display instructions.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Keep source files reasonable: oversized images slow crawler fetches and page previews. Compress without introducing visible text artifacts.
- Use deterministic URLs: a stable asset makes debugging and cache behavior easier; version the URL when the visual must change immediately.
- Separate generation from delivery: generate the 1200 × 630 artwork during publishing, then serve a static file through your normal HTTPS infrastructure.
- Test failure paths: confirm that a missing asset, timeout or access restriction does not leave an invalid
og:imagetag on production pages.
