In a simplified payroll run, an Employee object can hold an employee identifier and a pay-policy reference, while a shared operation such as calculate_gross_pay asks the relevant policy to calculate pay. That workflow makes classes, objects, abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism concrete—without suggesting that one payroll design or formula fits every organization.
Start with a small payroll workflow
Imagine an application that processes a pay period. It needs to represent employees, apply a pay policy to each employee, and produce a register or payslip. For this illustration, gross pay is calculated using a simplified policy; separate steps may then apply illustrative deductions. This is a teaching example, not a complete payroll system: it does not specify legally valid rates, tax treatment, classifications, or production requirements.
- Define the types. An
Employeetype can describe the information the application needs, such as an identifier and a reference to a pay policy. A policy type can describe a calculation operation. - Create employee objects. Each employee object holds the values for one particular employee and refers to the policy used for that example.
- Run the calculation. The payroll process supplies relevant inputs and calls
calculate_gross_paythrough the employee or its policy. - Prepare output. The process uses the resulting figures in a payroll register or payslip, with any illustrative deductions handled separately.
The point is the structure of the program: the example keeps the pay calculation behind an operation rather than treating payroll as a collection of unrelated fields and formulas.
What is the difference between a class and an object?
A class defines a type; an object is one instance of that type. For example, an Employee class can define an identifier field and a pay-policy field. A particular employee object has actual values for those fields. The class may also define methods—operations associated with that type—while each object carries its own state. The Python tutorial describes classes, instances, attributes, and methods in these terms: Python 3.14.8: Classes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A useful distinction is: the class describes what an employee object can contain or do; the object represents one employee’s particular data in the program. Creating a class also creates a type that can be used to make instances.
How the four OOP concepts appear in the payroll example
Abstraction: model only what the pay run needs
Abstraction means choosing the relevant attributes and interactions to represent in a model. For a small pay run, an employee identifier, a pay-policy reference, and a calculation operation may be enough to demonstrate the idea. A real HR or accounting application may need many additional concerns, but modeling all of them would distract from this example. Microsoft Learn describes abstraction as modeling relevant attributes and interactions in classes: Object-Oriented programming.

Encapsulation: control how state and behavior are accessed
Encapsulation groups state and functionality and exposes a controlled way to use them. In this example, a calculation method could accept worked hours, validate the input, and return a result instead of letting unrelated parts of the program directly overwrite a calculated total. That validation is an illustrative design choice, not a claim about payroll compliance. Microsoft Learn describes encapsulation as hiding internal state and functionality behind public functions, and SAP also treats it as a core object-oriented concept: Microsoft Learn; SAP Help Portal: ABAP Objects – Object Orientation.
Inheritance: specialize a shared type when that helps
An illustrative hierarchy might have HourlyEmployee and SalariedEmployee types that reuse or extend a shared Employee type. Inheritance can let a derived class reuse, extend, or modify behavior from a base class. Microsoft Learn explains this mechanism in its guide to inheritance and specialized behavior.

These names are software-model choices. They do not determine a person’s legal status, benefits, or payroll treatment, and a payroll application does not have to use inheritance.
Polymorphism: call one operation, get behavior suited to the policy
Polymorphism lets a program use a common operation while different implementations supply the behavior. A payroll run might call calculate_gross_pay for each employee, while the selected policy performs its own simplified calculation. One illustrative policy could use hours multiplied by a rate; another could use a fixed period salary. The shared operation makes the caller’s workflow consistent even when the calculation differs. SAP describes same-named methods behaving differently across classes, and Microsoft shows derived implementations providing specialized behavior: SAP Help Portal; Microsoft Learn.

- Does the design make the shared calculation interface clear to the payroll process?
- Are there genuinely different pay behaviors that justify separate implementations?
- Are inputs and results controlled in a way that fits the application’s requirements?
- Can a new policy be added without making existing calculations difficult to understand or change?
These are review questions inferred from how interfaces, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism work; they are not empirical rankings of architectures. SAP’s discussion of object orientation covers encapsulation, interfaces, inheritance, and polymorphism in ABAP Objects: SAP Help Portal: ABAP Objects – Object Orientation. SAP’s version 2025 FPS01 documentation, dated February 2026, also distinguishes class components from instance components: ABAP Objects.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- A class defines a type; objects are instances with particular state.
- Abstraction keeps a model focused on relevant details and interactions.
- Encapsulation groups behavior with state and exposes controlled operations.
- Inheritance can reuse or extend behavior for specialized types.
- Polymorphism lets a common operation produce implementation-specific behavior.
- A payroll workflow is one way to see these ideas; it does not establish a universal payroll formula or architecture.
