GitHub’s pull-request Files changed tab is the best choice when you need comments, suggested edits, checks, commit history, and merge status. A standalone viewer is faster when you only have patch text, a .diff or .patch file, a raw URL, or git format-patch output. For sensitive code, review the service’s privacy and retention policy before uploading anything.
What an online Git diff viewer shows
A Git diff compares two versions of files. Inserted lines are normally shown in green, removed lines in red, and unchanged context around them helps you understand the change. Git’s own diff commands can produce several presentations, including unified output and word-level differences. The format affects readability: Git’s documentation notes that word-diff output can be larger than output from a dedicated word-diff tool.
Git-based tools generate unidiff, the preferred format identified in Git’s patch-submission guidance. A viewer that accepts standard unified diffs can therefore display output from commands such as git diff, a saved .diff file, or mail-ready git format-patch output.
Choose the right workflow
GitHub pull request: best for collaborative review
Open the pull request and select Files changed. You can switch between unified and split layouts, hide whitespace-only changes, filter files, and use the file tree to jump through a large change. Line comments, suggested edits, review submission, checks, conversation, commit history, and merge status remain attached to the same proposed change.

This is more than a renderer: it is a review record. It is usually the right option when the code is already hosted in a repository and other people must discuss or approve it.
Standalone online viewer: best for a quick visual check
A standalone viewer is useful when there is no pull request. SharePatch describes these inputs on its current service page:
- Pasted diff text.
- An uploaded, editable diff file.
- A raw patch URL.
- An isolated GitHub pull-request push.
- Unified Git diffs,
.diffand.patchfiles,git format-patchoutput, and patch series.
The same page states that raw patch URLs can be up to 1 MB and that unlisted review links can be created without a repository, branch, or pull request. These are vendor statements, not an independent test. The page does not establish retention or confidentiality terms, so check its current policy before submitting private source.

GitHub CLI: keep the source in your terminal
For a pull request, GitHub CLI documents gh pr diff. The command can print the normal diff, request patch format, or open the pull request in a browser. This is practical when you want to inspect the exact server-side change without navigating the web interface first.

VS Code’s GitHub integration lets you review repositories and inspect file diffs with comments. A local editor is preferable when you need symbol navigation, search, tests, extensions, or the working tree beside the proposed change.
Gerrit: compare patch sets directly
Gerrit’s review interface provides a side-by-side view for a patch and lets you compare one patch set with another or with a selected base. This is particularly useful when a change has been revised after review and you need to see what changed between iterations.

How to view a Git diff online
Method 1: review a pull request in GitHub
- Open the pull-request page in the repository.
- Select Files changed.
- Choose unified or split view according to your preference.
- Enable the whitespace-hiding control when formatting noise obscures the logic.
- Use the changed-file filter or file tree to find the files that matter.
- Hover a line and add a comment; use a suggested edit when you can provide an exact replacement.
- Read automated checks and the conversation before submitting an approval or change request.
Be precise about the comparison base. GitHub documents that compare pages and pull-request pages can calculate changed files from different merge bases. If two views appear to disagree, confirm the base, head, and commits being compared rather than assuming one display is broken.
Method 2: create a patch and open it in a standalone viewer
- From the repository, create a unified patch, for example
git diff > review.diff. For email-style patches, usegit format-patch. - Check the file before uploading. Remove secrets, tokens, credentials, and proprietary code that the recipient does not need.
- Paste the text, upload the
.diffor.patchfile, or provide a raw URL supported by the viewer. - Switch between unified and split presentation if the service offers both.
- Scan the file list first, then inspect each hunk and its surrounding context.
- Share an unlisted link only with people who are allowed to see the code, and verify the service’s current retention and deletion terms.
Method 3: use GitHub CLI
- Authenticate GitHub CLI and identify the pull-request number.
- Run
gh pr diff 123to print the change. - Use the command’s patch-format option when you need a patch file, or its browser option when you want the hosted review page.
Controls that make a visual review reliable

How to read a patch without missing defects
- Establish scope. Read the file list and identify deleted, renamed, generated, and configuration files.
- Check the comparison. Confirm the intended base branch or commit and the head revision.
- Review behavior before style. Follow changed inputs, permissions, error paths, database writes, and external calls.
- Inspect context. A small hunk can depend on unchanged code elsewhere in the file.
- Look for test impact. Check whether tests, fixtures, migrations, documentation, and deployment configuration changed with the code.
- Reproduce uncertainty. If the visual diff cannot answer a question, check out the commit locally and run the relevant test or command.
Common problems and fixes
The patch is blank
Confirm that the input is a complete diff rather than an empty command result. Check the base and head revisions, and make sure the URL returns patch text rather than an HTML login page.

Files are missing
A compare view may use a different merge base from a pull request. Reopen the pull request’s Files changed view and verify the selected commits. Also check whether generated or binary files are collapsed or excluded.

Whitespace overwhelms the review
Enable the viewer’s whitespace-hiding control, or generate a diff with an appropriate whitespace option. Do not ignore whitespace when indentation changes could alter program behavior.
The viewer rejects the upload
Check that the file is valid unified diff, .patch, or supported git format-patch output. A service may impose a size limit; SharePatch states a 1 MB limit for raw patch URLs. For larger changes, use the repository host or split the review into meaningful commits.
Private code may be exposed
Do not infer confidentiality from an “unlisted” link. Remove secrets and read the provider’s current privacy, retention, access-control, and deletion terms. For regulated or proprietary code, a repository-hosted or self-managed review system may be more appropriate.

Comments cannot be submitted
Standalone viewers generally render text; they do not automatically have repository permissions, checks, or merge state. Move the discussion to the pull request, Gerrit change, or editor integration when review workflow features are required.

What is the difference between a patch and a diff?
A diff describes changes between versions; a patch is a diff packaged for application or distribution. Git can emit both ordinary unified diff output and git format-patch messages.
Can an online viewer merge my change?
A renderer normally cannot. Merging, permission checks, status checks, and approval belong to repository workflows such as pull requests or Gerrit.
Should I upload a private repository’s patch?
Only after checking the provider’s current privacy and retention terms and removing unnecessary sensitive material. An unlisted URL is not the same as a confidentiality guarantee.
