In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, staying alive means choosing the right response to pressure—not simply attacking faster. Learn how parries, dodges, Issen, soul absorption, and Oni abilities fit together, then adjust the challenge to suit your experience.
Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword for September 25, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game follows Miyamoto Musashi through a dark-fantasy version of Edo-era Kyoto as Genma threaten the city. The following tips use mechanics described by Capcom, PlayStation, and the developers; they do not assume specific button mappings or timing windows.
1. Learn your defensive options before focusing on damage
The game’s combat includes parrying, deflecting, dodging, and Issen, but these actions serve different purposes. PlayStation’s overview presents parrying and deflecting as blade-on-blade tactics, while Issen is a critical attack. Think of defense as a set of choices: respond to an enemy’s pressure rather than defaulting to an attack. The reviewed official material does not specify exact inputs or timing windows, so use the game’s own instructions to learn execution.

2. Treat Issen as a high-risk opportunity
Issen is the series’ signature critical attack, but director Satoru Nihei says it must be performed just before a hit. Mistiming it can leave Musashi taking substantial damage. Watch an opponent’s commitment to an attack before trying to trigger Issen, and avoid treating it as a routine offensive move. Nihei described the updated mechanic as retaining its classic element in an Xbox Wire interview.

3. Earn a Break Issen by depleting Stamina
Break Issen offers another route to the critical attack: it becomes available after you completely deplete an enemy’s Stamina Gauge. The producer has said this makes Issen available in more situations than strict timing alone. Treat it as a payoff for wearing down an enemy, not a guaranteed kill; the official descriptions do not promise a specific damage result.
4. Dodge to evade and build toward Reflex Combo
PlayStation says consecutive dodges fill a Reflex Dodge gauge. Once it is full, it enables the powerful Reflex Combo. Use dodges to get clear of attacks while building toward that response, rather than chaining them without regard to enemy pressure. The official overview names the gauge and combo but does not publish an exact dodge count or timing requirement.

5. Absorb souls without stopping when it is safe
The Oni Gauntlet absorbs Genma souls and converts them into a power source. The developers say soul absorption can happen while moving, which gives you an option to collect souls without always standing still. It remains a tactical choice: judge whether the fight gives you room to absorb them. No fixed expiration time or exact color-coded soul values are established in the cited official material.

Oni powers offer more than one kind of advantage. PlayStation’s overview describes Oni Strength as a way to break defenses and Oni Agility as a movement ability that can cross certain walls. The producer also says switching Oni Armaments slows time, giving you room to choose an armament without the same real-time pressure. Use the ability that fits the obstacle or opening in front of you instead of treating every power as interchangeable.

7. Pick a difficulty that lets you learn, and adjust if needed
The game offers Story Mode and Action Mode. Producer Akihito Kadowaki describes Action Mode as intended for players more familiar with action games, while noting that its challenge can be tuned using an Action Guide. Choose the mode that supports your preferred pace; if Action Mode feels like it is getting in the way of learning the combat, use the guide to adjust it.

The demo includes Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption, making it a useful way to encounter the main combat systems. PlayStation states that progress from the demo does not carry into the full game. However, demo save data can unlock the Kubi Akari charm. Capcom’s announcement said the Windows demo would arrive later, so demo timing and availability may differ by platform.
