The OnePlus 8 Pro’s so-called “X-ray vision” was a limited Photochrom camera effect—not real X-ray vision. Its Color Filter camera could capture some near-infrared light, which let it reveal details behind certain thin, infrared-transparent plastics. It could not see through arbitrary objects, and it was not a general-purpose way to see through clothing.
What the OnePlus 8 Pro’s “X-ray” mode actually was
“X-ray vision” was a nickname for the phone’s Photochrom filter, used with its Color Filter camera. OnePlus’s 2020 user manual lists Photochrom among the camera’s still-photo filters, alongside options such as Matte, Vivid, and B&W. The filter produced an unusual image because the camera responded to near-infrared light as well as visible light. OnePlus 8 Pro User Manual
That is fundamentally different from medical X-rays. The phone did not emit X-rays or see through everything in its path. The effect depended on whether near-infrared light could pass through a particular material and reach the camera. Some materials that appear opaque to the human eye let enough near-infrared through to expose features behind them; others block it.

What it could see through—and what it could not
Some thin plastic covers
Contemporary demonstrations and reporting described limited results with certain thin plastic coverings, including parts of some consumer electronics and controllers. These were material-specific examples, not a dependable inspection method. A plastic’s thickness and infrared transmission matter: another cover that looks similar may block the relevant light completely. 9to5Google’s May 19, 2020 report and DPReview’s May 22, 2020 report describe examples and limitations.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Crystal Clear】: The crystal clear case flaunts original phone design and beauty.
- 【Shockproof】: The protective cover features 4 corner Airbags to absorb impact and avoid scratches in most situations.
- 【Raised Camera & Screen Protection】: Raised bezels prevent screen and camera against drops & scratches.
- 【Perfect Fit】: The clear phone case fits perfectly to stop dust from entering and scratching the body of your phone.
- 【Slim Design & Enhanced Grip】: The slim phone case brings you greater portability and firmer grip, with no bulk and no skidding.
Even with a suitable material, the result could vary with lighting, distance, camera mode, and software. The reporting does not establish controlled performance measurements or a repeatable result for particular objects. Treat the effect as an unusual camera response, not a scanner that can reliably inspect what is inside a device.
Clothing and other solid objects
The feature was not a general clothing-see-through capability. 9to5Google said the phone could not see through clothes; DPReview noted limited examples involving clothing stretched unusually thin. Taken together, those reports support a narrow qualification, not a broad claim that the phone could see through clothing. The camera also could not see through arbitrary solid objects.
Any demonstration should use consenting participants or, better, inanimate materials. The phone’s unusual imaging behavior is not a reason to photograph someone without their knowledge or consent.
How Photochrom worked in practice
Near-infrared transparency is a property of the material, not a universal “see-through” setting. A thin plastic might pass enough near-infrared light for the camera to record something behind it, while another plastic—or a coating designed to block infrared—might not. The phone’s image processing then rendered that camera input as a Photochrom image.

OnePlus’s manual lists 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel still-photo resolution options for the main camera. Those figures should not be confused with the separate Color Filter camera, which DPReview identified as a 5-megapixel camera. They describe different camera hardware and are not measures of how much material Photochrom could penetrate.

The manual documents Photochrom in the camera interface for its 2020 manual edition; it does not confirm that every OnePlus 8 Pro still has the same option today. Software changes and regional variants matter, and the available reporting does not establish a current OxygenOS or HydrogenOS compatibility chart.

OnePlus’s response also changed over the course of May 2020. On May 19, 9to5Google reported a OnePlus forum statement saying the company was working on an over-the-air update that would retain Photochrom while limiting other functionality of concern. That report also described a temporary disablement for HydrogenOS and said the company did not then plan to disable the filter on OxygenOS. On May 22, DPReview reported a OnePlus Weibo statement, translated into English, describing a planned temporary software disablement because of possible privacy impacts in specific conditions and at very close distances. These were dated statements with different timing and software or geographic scopes—not a guarantee about a particular phone’s current firmware.

If Photochrom is missing or behaves differently on your device, first identify the exact model variant and installed software version in the phone’s system settings. Then check current OnePlus support information for that region and build. Do not assume that a menu path in a 2020 manual applies to every updated device, or install unofficial workarounds on the basis of old reports.

What to take away
- “X-ray vision” referred to a limited near-infrared Photochrom effect, not literal X-rays.
- Some thin plastics may let enough near-infrared through to reveal details behind them; results vary by material and conditions.
- Reports do not support describing the phone as generally able to see through clothing.
- Whether Photochrom is available on a particular OnePlus 8 Pro depends on its software build and region; the cited manual and 2020 announcements do not establish current availability for every device.
