Yes—you can store many values behind one variable name by assigning that name to a collection. The collection’s structure determines whether those values are kept in order, required to be unique, retrieved by a key, or processed in a particular sequence.
How can one variable hold many values?
A variable is a name a program uses to refer to a value. That value does not have to be a single number or piece of text: it can be a collection containing multiple values. For example, in Python, scores = [91, 84, 97] assigns the name scores to a list of three ordered numbers.
The list is one value from the program’s point of view, even though it contains several items. The variable is the handle; the data structure is how the collection organizes its contents. Other languages use different names and details for similar kinds of collections, so terms such as “list,” “array,” and “map” are not interchangeable across every language.
Which data structure should you use?
Start with the operations your program needs. Ask whether order and positions matter, whether duplicates are acceptable, how you will find an item, and where values will be added or removed. Then check the behavior documented for your language.

| Need | Suitable structure | Example or behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Keep values in order and refer to them by position | Sequence, such as a list | Python lists are ordered sequences. Python’s built-in types documentation also lists tuple and range as basic sequence types. |
| Add and remove items at one end, retrieving the newest item first | Stack | A Python list can serve as a stack with append() and pop() at the end. Python’s tutorial describes this last-in, first-out behavior. |
| Process items in arrival order | Queue | Python’s tutorial recommends collections.deque for queues; removing the first item from a list shifts the remaining items. |
| Keep unique values and check membership | Set | Python sets contain no duplicate values and support operations such as union, intersection, and difference. They are unordered. |
| Find a value using a meaningful key | Mapping, such as a dictionary | A Python dictionary associates keys with values. JavaScript provides Map for key-value associations. |
Sequences: when order and position matter
Use a sequence when the arrangement of items matters or when you need to refer to an item by its position. In Python, common sequence types include lists, tuples, and ranges. A list can be changed after creation; a tuple is immutable, so its contents cannot be reassigned in the same way.
For example, scores[0] refers to the first value in scores. Python sequences also include operations for working with ordered items, such as indexing and slicing. Consult the Python 3.14 built-in types documentation for the documented behavior of these sequence types.

Sets: when duplicates should not count
A set represents distinct values rather than a position-based sequence. In Python, seen = {"ada", "lin"} is a set containing two names. Adding a value that is already present does not create a second copy. Sets are useful for membership checks and for comparing groups with operations such as union, intersection, and difference.
Python sets are unordered, so do not rely on their iteration order to preserve an input sequence or display items consistently. See the Python data structures tutorial for set behavior and operations.

Dictionaries and maps: when a key identifies a value
A mapping connects keys to values. For example, ages = {"Ada": 36, "Lin": 29} lets a program look up an age using a name rather than a numeric position. In a Python dictionary, keys are unique; in the documented Python version, iteration follows insertion order.
JavaScript’s Map is also a key-value structure, but language-specific details matter. MDN describes JavaScript arrays, sets, and maps as distinct structures with their own behavior. A JavaScript array is an object with integer-keyed properties related to its length and is a suitable choice for an ordered list; it should not be assumed to have the same implementation or performance characteristics as a Python list. JavaScript typed arrays, meanwhile, provide array-like views over binary data buffers. For those distinctions, see MDN’s JavaScript data types and data structures guide.

Stacks and queues: when processing order matters
Stack: last in, first out
A stack returns the most recently added item first: last in, first out (LIFO). This fits tasks where the newest pending item should be handled before older ones. Python lists naturally support stack operations at the end: use append() to add and pop() to retrieve and remove the last item. The Python tutorial documents this use.
Queue: first in, first out
A queue returns items in the order they arrived: first in, first out (FIFO). Python’s tutorial cautions that lists are not efficient for this purpose: inserting or removing an item at the beginning requires the other elements to shift. It recommends collections.deque, which is designed for fast appends and pops at both ends. This is a Python-specific recommendation, not a universal performance ranking for every language or collection.

A practical way to choose
- Decide whether order matters. If values need stable positions or sequence order, start with a sequence.
- Decide whether duplicates are meaningful. If each value should appear only once, consider a set.
- Decide how you will find items. Use a sequence position for positional access or a mapping when a meaningful key identifies the value.
- Decide how processing should proceed. Choose a stack for last-in, first-out handling or a queue for first-in, first-out handling.
- Check the language documentation. Confirm mutability, ordering guarantees, and operation behavior for the specific type you plan to use; similar names do not promise identical implementations.
