The shared manifest coordinates configuration and the deployment lifecycle; it does not make the two clouds’ APIs interchangeable.
What “one manifest” means in this example
StackQL’s September 22, 2026 tutorial combines starter projects for Google Cloud and AWS Cloud Control into a single deployment. Its manifest lists the google and awscc providers, then declares one VPC resource for each cloud. Read the StackQL tutorial.
The manifest is the shared orchestration layer: it holds common settings, environment values, stack tags, and resource declarations. The provider-specific .iql files retain the queries and mutations that reflect each cloud’s own resource model and method contracts. In the tutorial’s words, “The interesting part is not just deploying to two clouds, but managing both through the same manifest and lifecycle,” writes Nirmal Chhodvadiya, a Cloud Consultant and AWS Community Builder.
How configuration is shared without conflating providers
The combined example uses a Google project value and a separate region_aws variable for AWS. Keeping the AWS region under its own name avoids collisions with settings belonging to another provider. The AWS resource also selects a CIDR value according to the chosen environment—prd, sit, or dev—and merges environment-level values with global tags.

This division keeps common deployment intent in one place while preserving provider-specific inputs where they belong. It is useful when the same stack needs coordinated configuration, but each cloud still requires its own resource identifiers, request fields, and checks.
What remains provider-specific in the resource files

These are details of the tutorial’s chosen methods, not universal syntax rules for every StackQL provider or resource. In particular, the two existence checks identify resources differently, and their request and state-query conventions should not be assumed to translate directly between clouds.

Run the combined stack safely
The tutorial recommends rendering the build before creating infrastructure. Its demonstrated sequence is:
- Render first: run the combined build with
--dry-run. The dry run resolves variables and renders provider-specific SQL without creating resources. Review the rendered values and operations before proceeding. The tutorial’s stackql-deploy documentation and examples provide further project guidance. - Run a real build: execute the build without
--dry-runto perform the declared operations. - Repeat the build: the tutorial uses a second build to demonstrate the existing-resource path rather than recreating both VPCs.
- Teardown: run the declared teardown operations to remove the resources when they are no longer needed.
Chhodvadiya reports that the captured example completed an initial build, that a second build found both VPCs already present and skipped their creation, and that teardown confirmed deletion. Those are reported outcomes from the tutorial run, not an independent reproduction or a performance benchmark.

Handle AWS Cloud Control’s asynchronous operations
AWS Cloud Control can return before a newly created resource is visible to the example’s existence query. The tutorial’s checks therefore retry, using a five-second retry delay for the relevant checks. If retries are exhausted, do not treat that alone as proof that creation failed—or as a fix. Inspect the operation’s status with the AWS CLI command the tutorial recommends:
aws cloudcontrol list-resource-requests
The tutorial also identifies quota limits, missing IAM permissions, and parameter validation errors as possible causes of a failed operation. Check the request status and the underlying error rather than relying on repeated existence checks to resolve an unsuccessful or still-running request.

Where this pattern can—and cannot—be reused
A shared manifest can provide one place to coordinate resources, environment values, build checks, and teardown across providers. The individual resource files still need to honor the relevant provider’s query capabilities, method contract, resource-identification strategy, and provisioning behavior.
The same approach may extend to additional StackQL providers when their capabilities and method contracts support the required operations. A common lifecycle is not a promise of identical APIs, queries, or timing across clouds.
