Share one canonical catalog of icon names, meanings, and usage guidance—not necessarily one image file or rendering component. Generate or package artwork for each target, add surface-specific adapters where needed, and test accessibility and build output separately on web and mobile.

What should an icon catalog share across platforms?

The shared contract is the icon’s identity and meaning. Give each icon a stable name, canonical source artwork, semantic description, category, status, and any approved variants. Keep names aligned across platform packages when they represent the same concept.

A folder of files alone is not a reliable catalog: it does not tell consumers what each image means or how it should be described to assistive technology. The U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) advises that repeated icons represent the same thing and use the same text description wherever they appear. USWDS icon guidance

Generate surface-specific outputs or publish adapters from the canonical source instead of maintaining unrelated copies by hand. That reduces the chance that names, artwork, or meanings drift apart as the system changes.

How do I share one icon library across web and mobile?

Keep the public vocabulary consistent, then let each delivery surface use a suitable representation and API. For example, a web adapter might expose SVG symbols, while a React Native adapter provides components or package imports appropriate to that environment. The adapter can differ without changing what an icon means to its consumers.

Web SVG sprites

USWDS documents referencing symbols from an SVG sprite with <use>; its examples use currentColor so icons inherit the surrounding text color. This can centralize repeated vector artwork on the web. Check that sprite paths resolve correctly in your deployment and that the result works in the browsers your application supports. USWDS icon guidance

React Native packages

Font Awesome documents both Kit packages and style-specific SVG packages for React Native. It recommends deep imports when bundle size and build speed matter because Metro handles tree-shaking differently from web bundlers. Choose an import style that fits your library and build, then inspect the actual target bundle rather than assuming web bundler behavior applies. Font Awesome: Add Icons with React Native

Apple app icons and platform-owned artwork

Do not treat launcher or store icons as interchangeable with small in-interface glyphs. Apple’s asset-catalog guidance covers app icons and explains that variant requirements differ by platform: developers may provide individual variants or use a high-resolution source image to generate some variations. Follow the asset-catalog requirements for the Apple target you ship. Apple: Configuring your app icon using an asset catalog

A shared catalog also need not replace artwork or symbols owned by an operating system. Whether to use a platform’s system symbols is a separate design and implementation decision for the specific OS; the cited Apple app-icon guidance does not prescribe an in-app symbol API.

How should a design system manage icons across platforms?

  1. Define canonical records. For each icon, record its stable name, source artwork, meaning or descriptive text, category, status, and approved variants.
  2. Generate or package target outputs. Use the canonical record to produce the formats or assets each application needs; avoid manually maintained copies that can fall out of sync.
  3. Publish surface-appropriate adapters. Keep shared names aligned while allowing web and native APIs to reflect their rendering and build environments.
  4. Make accessibility behavior explicit. Each adapter should distinguish decorative use from meaningful standalone use, and leave interaction to the surrounding button, link, or other functional control.
  5. Validate every target. Review the rendered icon, its accessible output, contrast, and inclusion in the actual build for each application.

This is a pattern, not a prescribed toolchain. The references describe particular platform examples; they do not establish one release workflow, universal file format, or cross-platform performance winner.

What accessibility behavior belongs in the icon contract?

For a decorative icon beside text that already communicates the same information, hide the icon from screen readers so it is not announced redundantly. For a standalone icon that conveys meaning or functionality, provide a descriptive accessible name. When an icon’s meaning may be unclear, pair it with text rather than expecting users to infer it. USWDS also recommends using repeated icons consistently so people can rely on their meaning. USWDS icon guidance

Interaction belongs to the control around the icon. A clickable icon should be part of a properly named button or link; the icon component itself should not substitute for the control’s accessible name or behavior.

How do you choose and validate a delivery format?

Start with the constraints of the consuming surface: platform conventions, rendering needs, accessibility behavior, package imports, build tooling, deployment, and caching. The available guidance supports specific options, not a universal speed or performance ranking. Treat these as project evaluation criteria and measure your own outputs.

  • Visual fidelity: Does the icon remain recognizable at the sizes and colors used in the interface?
  • Semantic consistency: Do matching names retain the same meaning and description across packages?
  • Accessibility: Is decorative content hidden, meaningful content named, and contrast sufficient in its actual background?
  • Build and bundle behavior: Does the target include only what it needs, and are import choices appropriate to its bundler?
  • Operations: Can the team generate, version, release, deploy, and cache the target artifacts reliably?

Test each consuming application rather than declaring the catalog accessible or efficient based only on its source. Review the rendered size, color and contrast, accessibility tree, recognizable meaning, and build inclusion on every target.
