OMRON OKAO, also called OKAO Vision, is a family of embedded image-sensing algorithms that can detect and analyze faces and, in some implementations, people and hands. It is a technology platform—not one consumer app or a single all-purpose sensor. Products such as OMRON’s HVC-P2 combine a camera with selected OKAO functions; the exact outputs depend on the product, camera and configuration.

What OKAO means—and what it does not

OMRON uses OKAO as a technology brand for facial-image sensing. Its name derives from the Japanese word kao, meaning face, with an honorific-style “O” prefix. OMRON identifies OKAO as a registered trademark in Japan and says it has applications and registrations in other regions. In English product material, the related name OKAO Vision is used for the underlying technology family. OMRON’s OKAO overview

“Human Image Sensing Technology” is a descriptive label, not necessarily the formal name of a product available for purchase. OKAO can be licensed as image-sensing software, while HVC modules are hardware products that incorporate selected algorithms. A specific module does not necessarily provide every capability associated with the broader technology.

What an OKAO system can detect or estimate

Capabilities vary by implementation. The table describes functions OMRON has documented across its OKAO materials and HVC products; it is not a promise that every product supports every row.

Function What the output represents Important distinction
Face detection Whether a face is present and its location in an image Finding a face does not identify who it belongs to.
Facial landmarks and features Positions or contours associated with the eyes, nose, mouth and face outline These features can support other estimates, such as pose or eye state.
Face orientation The direction the face is turned Head pose is not the same as gaze direction.
Eye state and blink Whether eyes appear open or closed, and blink-related information Results depend on image quality, angle and occlusion.
Gaze or line of sight An estimate of the apparent direction of the eyes Looking toward something does not prove attention or comprehension.
Expression or smile An estimate based on visible facial cues, such as smile degree Expression is not a reliable measurement of internal emotion, intent or consent.
Age and gender Model-generated estimates or classifications These are not verified age or self-identified gender.
Face recognition A comparison between a detected face and registered reference data For HVC-P2, OMRON’s command specification requires recognition data to be registered in advance.
Body and hand detection Detection of human bodies or hands in supported configurations Availability depends on the particular product and setup.

OMRON’s descriptions of face detection include multiple faces and different face sizes or orientations, with some ability to continue detection when part of a face is obscured. These are capability descriptions, not a universal accuracy guarantee. OMRON’s human-image-sensing overview

Detection, analysis and recognition are different jobs

  • Detection locates a face in an image.
  • Analysis estimates visible attributes or cues such as landmarks, pose, gaze, eye state, expression, age or gender.
  • Recognition compares a face with previously enrolled reference data to check for a match.

Conflating these functions can create both technical and privacy problems. A face detector can find a face without knowing its identity; a recognition function requires reference data and raises additional questions about enrollment, storage, access and retention.

The output may be measurements or classifications rather than a finished application. OMRON’s HVC documentation says integrators must build the surrounding system to consume the module’s results. Whether images are processed or stored in a particular way depends on the implementation; confirm the data flow rather than assuming the module’s name tells you where images go. Where OMRON has applied OKAO-based sensing

  • Cameras and smartphones: face detection and image-related functions, including autofocus and mobile-device features.
  • Digital signage and retail: applications may use estimated audience characteristics or expression to adapt content. Such use is not proof that demographic estimates are accurate for every visitor.
  • Vending machines, kiosks and POS: wide-angle sensing can support customer interaction in relatively close-range installations.
  • Robotics and industrial equipment: sensing an operator or customer can inform interaction, machine behavior or an operator-related workflow. Identification-based uses need security controls beyond the sensor itself.
  • Automotive monitoring: specialized implementations have analyzed driver face information, eyelid state and gaze as signals related to driver status or readiness. OMRON technical paper on driver-status monitoring

Accuracy, interpretation and limits

OMRON’s public materials do not establish one accuracy percentage that applies across every OKAO function, module, camera and environment. They also do not establish equal performance across demographic groups, lighting conditions, viewing angles, camera types, masks or glasses. A performance claim for a particular product or specialized setup should not be generalized to the whole technology family.

  • Expression is not emotion: a smile or expression estimate describes visible cues, not a person’s actual mood, honesty, intent or consent.
  • Gaze is not attention: eye direction alone cannot show that someone read, understood or attended to content.
  • Estimated age and gender are not verified identity: treat outputs as uncertain classifications, not authoritative personal facts.
  • Detection is not recognition: locating a face does not establish a match to a person.
  • Recognition depends on enrollment and conditions: a match may fail if the person is absent from the reference set or differs from enrollment conditions because of pose, occlusion or image quality.
  • Multiple people complicate attribution: an application needs a clear rule for which detected person drives an action and what happens when results conflict.

These estimates should not be used as sole evidence for consequential decisions such as access, employment, credit or healthcare eligibility. OMRON’s capability documentation is not a substitute for independent testing on the intended population and environment.

Buying or integrating OKAO in 2026

OMRON’s US components site currently lists OKAO Vision as image-sensing software and presents HVC-related products separately. It states that cumulative shipping licenses exceed 1.5 billion; OMRON’s selection guide qualifies the figure as purchased licenses since 2009, based on an internal company survey conducted in April 2019. It is not a current annual shipment count or a measure of active installations. The same guide says supporting face information represents more than one million people, but that wording does not establish that the data is publicly available or representative of all populations. OMRON image-sensing software · HVC selection guide

The public pages cited here do not establish a universal 2026 price, self-service developer signup, generally available SDK terms, support period, or worldwide stock status. Buyers should ask OMRON or an authorized regional distributor to confirm availability, licensing, supported functions and documentation for the exact part number and territory. The US software page also lists AM1; the available information describes it as a related but distinct offering, not simply a renamed OKAO Vision product.

Checks before selecting a module or license

  1. Write down the required output. Decide whether you need face detection, landmarks, pose, gaze, blink, expression, demographic estimates, body or hand detection, or enrolled-face matching. Confirm each function against the precise product and regional edition.
  2. Match optics to the installation. Choose long-distance versus wide-angle based on actual distance, field of view and number of people. Do not infer suitability from the OKAO name alone.
  3. Test the real scene. Evaluate backlighting, low light, sunlight, LED flicker, shadows, reflections, exposure changes, masks, glasses, hats, side profiles and partial faces. Near-infrared automotive work is not evidence of equivalent performance from an RGB camera.
  4. Map the data path. Ask what the module returns, whether images leave the device, where enrollment templates are stored, and which host processor and application software you must provide.
  5. Set privacy and security controls. Minimize collection, limit purpose, use a valid legal basis where required, protect templates and outputs, set retention limits, and provide clear notice. Obtain legal and privacy review for biometric or demographic inference; the cited product documents do not certify a deployment as compliant.
  6. Define fallback behavior. Specify what happens if no face is found, multiple faces appear, confidence is low, a camera disconnects, lighting falls outside tested conditions or the recognition database is unavailable. Do not make an uncertain estimate the sole basis for a safety- or rights-affecting action.

Who OKAO is best suited to

OKAO is most relevant to manufacturers and integrators seeking embedded human-image sensing, either as licensed software or through a camera-equipped component such as HVC-P2. It is a less obvious fit when a project needs a turnkey retail camera system, a self-service cloud API, published demographic accuracy benchmarks, or undocumented capabilities such as advanced liveness detection or large-scale identity search. The surrounding application, testing and governance remain the integrator’s responsibility.
