Short answer: The old N64 “memory pack” is the Controller Pak, not the console’s Expansion Pak. Original Controller Paks store saves in battery-backed SRAM. You can replace the coin cell, convert the SRAM to compatible FRAM for batteryless storage, or build a switched-bank design—but each option has different save-loss, compatibility and soldering risks.
What the N64 memory pack actually is
The accessory discussed in the AnandTech thread is the Nintendo 64 Controller Pak (also called a Memory Pak), the small cartridge that plugs into the controller and stores game saves. It is unrelated to the N64 Expansion Pak, which is a console RAM upgrade.
Nintendo’s period documentation describes the Controller Pak as memory chips powered by a battery. William Gaatjes summarized the 2016 design in the AnandTech thread as “nothing more then a 32K*8bits RAM powered by a CR2032 lithium coin battery.” That is the baseline architecture a modification must preserve: the N64 expects a particular memory bus, chip-select behavior and physical layout.
Which modification fits your goal?

If your priority is a straightforward repair, replace the battery. If you want to eliminate the recurring cell, a carefully matched FRAM conversion is the cleaner long-term architecture. Treat a bank switch as an experiment rather than a guaranteed capacity upgrade.

Prepare the Pak without sacrificing existing saves
- Back up the data first. Use a compatible save-dumping method if you have one. Do not assume a battery swap will preserve data while the cell is disconnected.
- Identify the exact board. Photograph both sides, record the memory IC marking and mark the battery’s positive and negative orientation before touching any solder.
- Gather the opening and soldering tools. The Delta Island tutorial lists a 3.8 mm Gamebit bit, desoldering equipment, a soldering iron and solder. Use a fine tip and adequate lighting for board work.
- Inspect before heating anything. Look for corrosion around the battery, cracked joints, lifted pads and damaged traces. Clean dirty contacts with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol and let them dry fully.
- Check the proposed replacement on paper. Compare operating voltage, data-bus width, package, pinout and timing with the original IC and the board revision. A part that appears to have the right capacity can still be electrically or mechanically wrong.
Option 1: replace the original CR2032
Why this is the least invasive repair
The SRAM, address decoding and standard Controller Pak layout stay intact. Only the aging cell is changed, so this path avoids redesigning the memory interface and gives games the architecture they already expect.
Replacement procedure
- Open the shell carefully with the appropriate Gamebit driver and expose the board.
- Confirm the polarity marking and photograph the original installation. Check whether the battery is a tabbed, board-mounted type rather than a loose holder.
- Inspect the cell area for leakage or corrosion. If a pad or trace is damaged, repair that fault before installing a new cell.
- Desolder the old tabs with controlled heat and minimal force. Avoid pulling a pad away from the board.
- Solder in a tabbed CR2032 with the same polarity and a package that clears the shell. Do not substitute a part whose tabs or height can short against the case.
- Under magnification, check both joints for bridges and verify continuity from the battery connections to the board as appropriate.
- Reassemble and test a real game by saving, powering down, restarting, loading and repeating the cycle. Keep the original backup until the replacement has passed several tests.
If the old cell is disconnected before the save is preserved, the SRAM may lose its contents. There is no software setting that can restore data that was erased and never backed up.

Option 2: convert the Pak to FRAM
What the conversion changes
Xrider’s Delta Island tutorial, published 17 February 2022, describes removing both the battery and the original SRAM, then installing an FM18W08 or FM28V020 FRAM device. FRAM retains data without a coin cell, so future battery leakage and routine cell replacement are removed from the maintenance plan.
Verify the chip before desoldering
- Match the replacement’s operating voltage to the Controller Pak board.
- Match the data-bus width and pinout; a similar-looking package is not proof of compatibility.
- Confirm the physical package, pin spacing and height will fit the shell.
- Check timing and chip-enable behavior against the original SRAM.
- Do not infer a usable capacity increase from the replacement part’s designation. The console and games may address only the standard layout.
Conversion sequence
- Run an initial test with the unmodified Pak if possible, so you know whether it currently saves and loads.
- Open the shell, document polarity and board orientation, and remove the battery.
- Desolder and remove the SRAM without lifting pads or damaging nearby traces.
- Install the verified FRAM part in the correct orientation, then inspect every pin for solder bridges and incomplete joints.
- Check continuity and shorts under magnification before applying power.
- Use a compatible game to format or repair the Pak if the tutorial’s procedure calls for it.
- Save, power off, reload, delete a test save, repeat the operation and cycle power several times on original N64 hardware.
FRAM is an engineering solution to the battery-failure problem, not a published guarantee of a particular service life. The available sources do not provide controlled longevity, failure-rate or success-rate statistics, so treat durability as the reason for the design rather than as a measured number.

Option 3: add a switched bank
What the AnandTech design adds
The 19 June 2016 AnandTech thread describes piggybacking a second Toshiba TC55257B SRAM, adding 27 kΩ pull-ups to the chip-enable lines and using a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch to select banks.
Critical operating rule
The bank selector must be changed only while the N64 is turned off. Switching while powered can leave the console connected to an unexpected memory device and risks corrupted or inaccessible saves.

Why this is not automatically “more memory”
A second physical SRAM does not force games to discover a larger save area. Software may address only the standard Controller Pak map, and the selected bank determines which set of data is visible. A bank mod therefore creates separate selectable storage, not a universal increase that every title will use transparently. Keep the selector in a known position and label it if more than one person will use the Pak.

- Clean the controller and Pak contacts with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol; allow them to dry completely.
- Inspect battery polarity or FRAM orientation against your photographs.
- Check continuity on power, ground, data and control connections, and look for solder bridges under magnification.
- Insert the Pak fully and confirm that a compatible game recognizes it.
- Format or repair the Pak when the game requests it; formatting can destroy existing data, so do it only after backup.
- Create a test save, power down, restart and load it.
- Delete the test save and create another one to exercise more than a single write.
- For a banked design, repeat the test in each bank and change the SPDT selector only while powered off.
- Repeat several power cycles on real N64 hardware before trusting important saves.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The N64 does not recognize the Pak
Power down, remove the Pak and clean its contacts. Recheck shell seating, board orientation, continuity and solder bridges. On a FRAM conversion, verify the chip’s package and pinout rather than assuming the part is a drop-in replacement.

Saves disappeared after the repair
Check whether the original cell was disconnected before a backup was made. If the SRAM lost power and no external copy exists, the prior data may not be recoverable. For a banked unit, return to the known bank with the console off and test again.
The FRAM-equipped Pak saves inconsistently
Inspect every replacement-IC pin, confirm voltage and timing compatibility, and repeat the game’s format or repair process. A cracked joint or incorrect orientation can look like a software-format problem.
Only one bank appears to work
Turn the N64 off before moving the selector, then inspect the added SRAM, the 27 kΩ pull-ups and the chip-enable wiring. Even a correctly wired second bank may not be addressed by a particular game.
Practical recommendation
For most owners, a tabbed CR2032 replacement is the sensible first repair because it preserves the original single-bank design and requires the fewest changes. Choose FRAM when eliminating the battery justifies careful IC removal and compatibility checks. Attempt the switched-bank circuit only if you specifically want selectable banks and are prepared for game-dependent behavior; it should not be marketed or understood as a guaranteed universal capacity upgrade.
