To speed up an old iPhone or iPad, first identify what is actually slow: internet loading, app launches, touch response, or battery-related performance. Each points to a different fix, and no single change will help every device. Work through these 15 checks one at a time, starting with reversible steps and moving to updates or service only when the symptoms support it.

1. Identify what feels slow
Notice when the delay occurs before changing settings. A page that loads slowly may point to a network issue; slow app launches can relate to storage or apps reloading; delayed or incorrect taps call for touch troubleshooting; and sluggishness alongside battery concerns may warrant a Battery Health check.
Test one change at a time, then repeat the task that felt slow. That makes it easier to tell whether a step addressed your actual symptom.

2. Check the internet connection
If web pages or internet-dependent apps load slowly, try Wi-Fi or test cellular data in a different location. Apple notes that network congestion and changing cellular connections can make a device seem slow. If cellular data remains slow across multiple locations, contact your carrier. Apple’s slow-device guidance covers network-related causes.
3. Close an app only when it is unresponsive
If a specific app is frozen or will not respond, close and reopen that app. Use the app-switching gesture or button for your model, then swipe the affected app away. If the app remains stuck after reopening, restart the device before trying other changes.
4. Stop force-closing apps as routine maintenance
Swiping away every app does not make an iPhone or iPad faster. Apple Support explains: “Force closing apps unnecessarily can slow down your device. Reopening a closed app takes longer because it has to reload all its data.” Leave apps alone unless one stops responding. Apple Support’s explanation is specific to this behavior.

5. Check available storage
Open Settings > General > [device] Storage and check the available space. Apple’s current slow-device guidance recommends keeping at least 1 GB free to avoid slowdowns. If you have less, use the storage list to identify what is taking up room before removing anything. Apple’s storage guidance provides the 1 GB target.
6. Review the built-in storage recommendations
On the storage screen, review the recommendations your device offers, if any. The list also shows apps and their storage use, which can help you choose what to offload or remove rather than deleting items blindly. Available recommendations vary by device and software.
7. Offload apps you rarely use
Offloading removes an app to free storage while retaining its documents and data. If you later reinstall the app, its retained data can be available again. Choose this when you want to reclaim space without intentionally removing the app’s related data. See Apple’s storage instructions.

8. Delete an app only if you can lose its related data
Deleting an app also removes its related data. Before deleting, check whether anything important is stored only in the app or is not synced elsewhere. If you are unsure, prefer offloading or verify the app’s backup and sync options first. Apple describes the difference in its slow-device storage guidance.
9. Check Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode is intended to extend battery life by reducing power use, and some features may be disabled or work more slowly. Check Settings > Battery for Low Power Mode. If responsiveness matters and you can charge the device, turn it off and see whether the symptom changes. Menu labels can vary by software version. Apple lists Low Power Mode among possible slow-device factors.
10. Let the device return to a moderate temperature
An iPhone or iPad that is too hot or too cold may run more slowly. Move it to a moderate-temperature environment and let it settle before judging performance again. Avoid trying to speed it up with sudden heating or cooling. Apple includes temperature extremes in its slow-device guidance.

11. Check Battery Health
Where available, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and review the status. Battery aging can reduce capacity and peak performance, but a battery check alone does not establish that the battery is causing every slowdown. Settings and availability differ by model and software; follow the battery menu shown on your device. Apple explains battery condition and performance in its battery guidance.
12. Treat a “Service” battery status as a repair decision
If Battery Health shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement to restore full performance and capacity. Confirm the right repair route for your model with Apple or a qualified service provider. A replacement is not a guaranteed speed fix for every older device; it is relevant when battery condition supports it. See Apple’s battery guidance.
13. Confirm your model supports the update
Before attempting the latest iOS or iPadOS release, identify your iPhone or iPad model and confirm that release supports it. Older devices do not all support the newest software. Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance can help with compatibility and update issues.

14. Prepare for and install an available update
An update needs enough available storage and an internet connection. For a smoother download, use Wi-Fi and pause other downloads. Keep the device connected to power during a wireless installation. Update duration can vary with the update size and the storage on the device. Follow Apple’s model-appropriate steps in its update guidance.
15. Allow post-update work to finish, and restart for touch problems
If battery life or performance changes after an update
After an update, background tasks may temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. If battery life worsens just after updating, Apple advises waiting a few days before reassessing. Apple’s battery guidance explains this post-update effect.
If taps or touch response are incorrect
Restart the device and test the screen again. If it remains unresponsive, seek service rather than assuming a storage cleanup or network change will fix a touch problem. Apple includes these touch steps in its slow-device guidance.
When to seek help
Contact your carrier when cellular data remains slow across locations. For a battery showing Service, ask Apple or a qualified service provider about model-specific options. If touch remains unresponsive after a restart, seek service. If none of the relevant checks changes the symptom, describe exactly what is slow and when it happens when contacting Apple Support; the correct next step depends on the symptom and device.
