If Word, Excel, or another Office app will not open after an update, start by waiting for any repair or update to finish and restarting Windows once. Then check Microsoft’s current issue list and use Office’s built-in Quick Repair before trying Online Repair or reinstalling. These steps apply to Windows Microsoft 365 Apps and Office 2016–2024; menu names can vary by Windows version and installation type.
1. Let the update finish, then restart Windows
If Office says it is busy or an update or repair appears to be running, wait a few minutes before trying the app again. If it still will not start, restart Windows once and test Office again. Microsoft’s guidance for an “Office is busy” message is available in its Office busy troubleshooting article.
2. Check whether Microsoft has listed the problem
Before changing the installation, compare your error message and Office version with Microsoft’s current list of Office installation and activation issues. Match the affected app, Windows platform, version or update channel, and the wording of the error; a workaround for a different configuration may not apply. Microsoft labels entries with statuses such as fixed, resolved, or workaround.
One notice deserves particular care: Microsoft’s KB5002907 page describes an optional update for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows PCs more than 90 days out of date on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. The notice says the rollout has been paused and reports that some Office 2016 or Office 2019 devices were left without functioning versions after its repair action. This is a narrow, reported incident—not proof that it caused your problem. The update is not applicable to other channels or operating systems, and does not change devices managed through Group Policy or Cloud Update. Check the live notice for its current status rather than installing it as a general fix.

3. Run Quick Repair
Quick Repair is the first built-in repair to try because it is the faster option and replaces corrupted files it detects. It does not require the fuller online repair process. Microsoft notes that repair can affect the complete Office suite even when only one app is failing.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, the comparable page is commonly called Apps & Features.
- Find the Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 entry, open its menu, and choose Modify. Confirm any Windows permission prompt.
- Select Quick Repair if the option appears, then choose Repair and follow the prompts.
- When repair finishes, try opening the app again.
Menu labels and available repair choices depend on Windows and how Office was installed. Microsoft’s instructions are in its Office repair and uninstall guidance and its article about a “Something went wrong” startup error.

4. Use Online Repair if Quick Repair does not work
Online Repair is the more comprehensive repair option. It needs an active internet connection and can take longer than Quick Repair. Use the same Office Modify path described above, choose Online Repair if available, and follow the prompts. After it completes, test the app that failed. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the fuller repair in its guidance for an app that cannot start because AppVIsvSubsystems32.dll is missing.
5. Check Office and Windows update access
If an Office app opens
In an Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. Microsoft’s full instructions are in How to update Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows.

If Update Options is missing
The installation may use a volume license, or an organization may manage updates by policy. On a work or school PC, contact your IT help desk instead of trying to override managed settings. If no Office app opens, use the repair options above rather than relying on in-app update controls.
Do not treat every Windows update as an Office fix
The KB5002907 notice above describes a narrowly eligible optional update, not a universal remedy for Office launch failures. Follow Microsoft’s current issue-specific guidance for your version and channel.
6. Uninstall and reinstall Office only if repair fails
If neither repair option restores Office, Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter can remove the Office applications so you can reinstall the licensed product on the same Windows PC. Microsoft says this troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and currently cannot uninstall Office 2024. Its uninstall guidance says the Office applications are removed, not user-created documents. Still, confirm important files are backed up or synced before a major repair. If network, proxy, firewall, or antivirus obstacles prevent reinstallation, Microsoft says the Microsoft 365 offline installer may help work around those installation obstacles.

If only Outlook will not open
For classic Outlook, test whether it starts in safe mode before changing its profile or installation. Open the Windows Run dialog, enter Outlook /safe, and press Enter. If Outlook opens, disable COM add-ins and re-enable them one at a time to identify a possible conflict. Microsoft’s Outlook crash and hang guidance covers this troubleshooting route. The diagnostic tool described there is for classic Outlook, not new Outlook for Windows.
Best Value
Do not remove an Outlook profile casually: Microsoft warns that removing one also removes its associated data files. If you do not know whether those files are backed up or stored on a server, skip profile removal.
