Microsoft’s October 2026 Patch Tuesday is scheduled for October 13, but its Office fixes are not yet known. Microsoft’s Office security release notes reviewed for this forecast still list September 8, 2026, as the latest dated update. Before October’s bulletin arrives, use the time to identify which Office edition and update channel your devices use—and check whether those installations remain supported.
What is—and isn’t—known about October’s Office update
This is a pre-release forecast, not a summary of confirmed October vulnerabilities. Until Microsoft publishes the October entries, there is no confirmed October Office CVE list, affected-version list, severity breakdown, or fixed build to report. The Office release notes reviewed for this article list September 8, 2026, as the latest dated security update; its channel-specific builds are a snapshot, not a prediction of October builds. Check Microsoft’s Office security release notes and the Microsoft Security Update Guide on October 13 for confirmed details.
Microsoft says optional non-security preview releases are provided ahead of the following month’s planned security update so organizations can test. That is a reason to validate changes in your own environment—not evidence that October’s Office fixes have been tested or that a particular waiting period is right for every organization. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes risk assessment, validation, sequencing, critical-asset prioritization, and prompt updates.

Use the lead-up to inventory Office installations
Office release notes distinguish products, update channels, and retail versus volume-licensed editions. A build number or update instruction may apply to one installation path but not another, so identify what is installed before using the October notes.

- Installed version and build: Capture the current details so you can compare them with the correct Microsoft entry after publication.
- Deployment and compatibility needs: Document requirements that affect validation and any upgrade decision rather than assuming one edition is suitable for every device.
Check these Office lifecycle dates
| Product or product family | Microsoft’s listed date | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Office 2021 family, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, OneNote, Project, Publisher, and Visio | Retirement: October 13, 2026, according to Microsoft’s product lifecycle listing. | Confirm the exact product and edition, then plan a supported path that fits your deployment and compatibility requirements. |
| Office LTSC 2021 entries, including the Mac LTSC edition | End of support: October 13, 2026, as listed by Microsoft’s lifecycle page. | Check the specific LTSC entry; Microsoft labels these entries “End of Support,” distinct from the Office 2021 family’s “Retirement” label. |
| Office 2019 | Support ended October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Office security release notes. | Microsoft recommends organizations still using Office 2019 begin upgrading. Microsoft says it may issue later updates at its discretion, so the end date does not establish that no later update is possible. |
These dates are reasons to verify your exact product’s status and plan—not instructions to uninstall Office as a security mitigation. If you are considering a supported edition, such as Office 2024, check its edition, licensing, deployment, and compatibility requirements before choosing a replacement.
When Microsoft publishes the October bulletin
- Open the Office security release notes and Security Update Guide. Confirm the October entries rather than relying on a forecast or a previous month’s build.
- Match each device to the applicable product and channel. Use the recorded edition, license type, channel, and installed build to find the relevant guidance.
- Record confirmed details. For each applicable entry, capture the affected product, CVE identifier, fixed version or build, and release date as Microsoft lists them.
- Assess and validate deployment. Follow your organization’s risk-based sequencing and test in an environment representative of your compatibility needs.
- Prioritize critical, exposed assets. Set deployment order according to risk and your validation process; do not assume that one delay or schedule suits every environment.
Keep Windows and AD FS changes separate
Microsoft’s October messaging also identifies nearby Windows and identity-related dates: Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, and AD FS Distributed Key Manager container ACL enforcement begins in October. These are separate servicing changes, not evidence of an Office vulnerability or part of the Office bulletin. Check the relevant product guidance for devices and systems affected by those changes.
