Breath of the Wild is the better choice if exploration means freedom to roam, choose routes, and improvise through a landscape. Ocarina of Time is better suited to players who enjoy discovery guided by a clearer progression, with the overworld connected to dungeons and items. Neither is objectively better: the difference is whether you want to chart your own path or follow a more structured adventure.
How the games approach exploration
The distinction is less about how much ground either game contains than about how each asks you to move through it. Breath of the Wild emphasizes self-directed travel and experimentation across its landscape. Ocarina of Time combines overworld exploration with dungeons and item-based progression, giving discovery a more guided shape.

Breath of the Wild: choose your route and experiment
Breath of the Wild gives you a map and towers for surveying the landscape, then lets you decide which distant points of interest to pursue and how to approach them. Nintendo lists climbing, horseback travel, rafts, shield surfing, and gliding with the paraglider among the ways to get around. These tools make the terrain part of route-finding rather than just scenery.
#1 Best Overall
- Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
- Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
- Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
- Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
- Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways
Nintendo also says the game includes more than 100 Shrines of Trials, with puzzles and in-game rewards. That figure describes the Shrines, not a comparison of either game’s total content or quality. The official store page lists the game’s release date as March 3, 2017.
In a June 15, 2016 interview with TIME, producer Eiji Aonuma agreed that the game’s exploration lets players guide themselves. He described the appeal of controlled climbing this way: “We really wanted for Link to climb up things, but it wasn’t fun to create an auto-climb function. By contrast, it was really fun to have Link actually grab on things, and then being able to control that climbing motion.”
Ocarina of Time: discover through progression
Ocarina of Time offers a different kind of exploration: its 3D world connects overworld travel with dungeons and items that support progression. Rather than emphasizing a range of self-chosen ways to traverse terrain, the adventure gives discovery a clearer direction through its progression structure.

That approach can be more satisfying if you want places to explore to feel like parts of a guided journey, with dungeons and progression shaping what comes next. The available sources support this broad contrast, but not exact comparisons of regions, dungeon counts, or total content.
