To see what happened to one invoice request, follow a distributed trace: a connected record of the request’s operations as it moves through services and database calls. The key is to propagate trace context across each boundary, use consistent span names and attributes, and avoid putting sensitive invoice or customer data into telemetry.
What a trace shows
When an invoice request fails or takes too long, a trace can show which operations ran and how they relate. OpenTelemetry defines a trace as the path taken by one request as it propagates through multiple services. A trace consists of spans: records of individual operations arranged in parent-child relationships. The inbound HTTP request is typically the entry point; work it triggers appears beneath it.
This is a map of instrumented activity, not a guarantee that every cause will be visible. Missing instrumentation or broken context propagation can leave gaps.
Follow the request across service boundaries
1. Start with the inbound HTTP span
Create or capture a server span when the service receives the invoice request. Use HTTP semantic conventions so the span has a recognizable name and standard request attributes. OpenTelemetry’s HTTP guidance prefers a name in the form {method} {target} when a low-cardinality target is available; otherwise, use the method. A route template such as GET /invoices/{invoiceId} is more useful for grouping than a name containing each request’s actual invoice number.

The HTTP conventions include request method, URL path, and URL scheme among server-span attributes. Check the conventions and instrumentation-library version in use before relying on exact attribute names: older instrumentation may emit earlier experimental conventions, and migration behavior can vary.
2. Carry context into the downstream request
When the service calls another service, its outgoing operation should be represented by a client span. The receiving service extracts the propagated context and continues the trace, so its server span is connected to the originating request instead of appearing as an unrelated trace. In OpenTelemetry, the default propagator uses headers specified by W3C TraceContext, commonly carried in the traceparent header. See OpenTelemetry’s context propagation guide.

Propagation must be configured and supported at both ends of the boundary. For asynchronous work, apply the same principle when handing work to a queue or other mechanism: preserve and extract the trace context where that mechanism supports it. If context is not carried through, the resulting spans may not form one connected request journey.
3. Represent database work as spans
Database operations belong in the trace when you need to distinguish time spent in application logic from time spent waiting on database work. The OpenTelemetry database convention recommends CLIENT span kind for typical calls to a database in a separate process. These spans should appear beneath the service operation that initiated them, with names and attributes following the conventions supported by the instrumentation in use.

SQL-commenter propagation is optional, not a default requirement. OpenTelemetry’s database guidance says it should not be enabled by default; query comments with high-cardinality context can also affect performance on some database systems. See the database client span conventions before choosing to opt in.
Make spans consistent without exposing invoice data
Consistent naming and semantic attributes let operators correlate telemetry across services and languages. Use stable route templates and operation names, rather than embedding a unique invoice number, customer name, or other sensitive identifier in a span name or broadly indexed attribute.

URL paths deserve particular care. OpenTelemetry’s HTTP conventions say sensitive content in url.path should be scrubbed when instrumentation can identify it. If identifiers appear in a path, review the emitted spans and configure suitable redaction or route-based capture. Apply the same privacy review to other attributes: capture only what operators need, and do not treat a trace backend as a safe place for unrestricted request data. See the HTTP span conventions.
Check whether the trace explains the request
- Confirm that the inbound HTTP server span appears and has a useful, stable name.
- Inspect parent-child links to make sure downstream service and database operations belong to the same trace.
- Verify that trace context crosses every relevant process, network, and asynchronous boundary.
- Review the HTTP response and error outcome alongside the operation timing; a trace shows recorded activity, but may not establish the cause of a failure by itself.
- Inspect URL paths, span names, and attributes for sensitive values and unnecessary high-cardinality data.
- Check the semantic-convention and instrumentation versions in each service. OpenTelemetry’s conventions evolve, and older instrumentation may emit earlier experimental attributes. The project’s semantic conventions documentation provides the wider convention context.
With these checks in place, one invoice request can be read as a connected sequence: HTTP entry, downstream work, and database operations. Whether that sequence is complete depends on the instrumentation and propagation configured in the services involved.
