If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube while you use an Airtel 5G hotspot, start by checking whether your upload capacity stays high enough throughout the stream—not just during a speed-test peak. Lower OBS’s bitrate to leave upload headroom, compare OBS and YouTube’s timestamps and health messages, then test one connection or setting at a time. Repeated reconnects point to an unstable path between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server; they do not, by themselves, prove Airtel is at fault.

1. Confirm whether upload instability is the likely cause

In OBS, open View > Stats and note dropped frames and disconnects, along with their times. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check stream health and note any warnings at the same times. Also record whether the phone’s hotspot itself disconnects. OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; that makes the network path the first thing to test, not a diagnosis of the carrier.

Run upload tests during the hours you actually stream and under similar conditions. A single result—especially a brief peak—cannot show what the connection sustains over time. YouTube recommends testing with a representative stream and monitoring stream health. Airtel’s published hotspot guidance addresses connection problems generally; it does not specify an OBS setting, diagnose an individual Airtel 5G connection, or establish a universal Airtel 5G upload speed. Your location, timing, phone, and network conditions matter.

2. Reduce bitrate and leave upload headroom

YouTube’s guidance says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Apply these as cautious starting points to upload capacity that is sustained under representative conditions—not to the best speed-test result. They are guidance, not a guarantee that a cellular hotspot will stay stable.

In OBS, go to Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and adjust the streaming encoder’s bitrate. In Settings > Video, reduce output resolution or frame rate if the connection still cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Change one setting at a time, test, and record whether reconnects and dropped frames improve.

Use YouTube’s figures for the actual codec and output

YouTube’s live encoder guide lists the following H.264 bitrate ranges. These are platform encoding recommendations, not evidence that a hotspot can sustain them. Other codecs, including AV1 and H.265, have different ranges; consult the table for the codec you are actually using.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. If your sustained upload does not leave room for the selected bitrate plus headroom, lower the bitrate or output settings rather than relying on a short-lived speed-test peak. YouTube also recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Set these under Settings > Output in OBS if they are not already configured.

3. Try dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion if that option is available in your version. OBS can then reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. This may help keep data flowing, but image quality can fall as bitrate drops. It does not repair weak or changing radio conditions, network congestion, or carrier routing. If it masks the reconnects, continue investigating the underlying instability rather than treating it as a network fix.

4. Isolate the connection path

Make controlled comparisons and change only one factor per test. Record the time, setting, and outcome so the results are useful rather than anecdotal.

  • Try a different YouTube ingest server in the streaming settings, if OBS offers the choice. A change in results may point to a path or server issue; it is not conclusive on its own.
  • Compare another internet connection, such as a different hotspot or fixed broadband, while keeping the OBS settings the same. If the stream stabilizes, that helps narrow the issue to the original connection path.
  • Compare another streaming service as a diagnostic, not a solution. A service comparison can help distinguish a YouTube-specific symptom from a broader outbound connection problem.
  • If practical, test a wired phone-to-computer connection. OBS recommends trying wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. USB tethering depends on phone and computer compatibility, and a cable does not improve mobile signal or guarantee a stable stream.

5. Check OBS, the computer, and local network software

  • Update OBS and review its log for connection errors around the recorded disconnect times.
  • Check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-prioritization utility, or “optimizer” is interfering. Test changes cautiously, especially for security software; do not leave protections disabled as a permanent workaround.
  • In OBS’s network settings, leave Bind to IP set to Default unless you have a specific reason to bind to an interface.
  • OBS suggests testing IPv4-only if connection problems persist. Restore IPv4/IPv6 if the test makes no difference.
  • Network optimizations and TCP pacing mentioned in OBS guidance are Windows-only options. Do not expect those settings on other operating systems.

6. Give support evidence they can use

If OBS and YouTube indicate that the encoder is healthy but outbound connectivity remains unstable, contact Airtel with a concise record of the problem. Include your location, dates and times, repeated upload-test results, OBS bitrate and output settings, OBS log, YouTube stream-health messages, and whether the phone’s hotspot remained connected. YouTube also advises contacting your internet provider when connection tests show problems. Without the device details, logs, timing, and comparison tests, the specific cause cannot be determined.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than produce a live OBS show, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud service keeps the loop running without your computer or home connection staying on. It streams the uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
