If viewers can’t hear a media file or playlist on your YouTube stream, first watch the meter for that specific source in OBS. No meter movement points to playback, source selection, or capture; a moving meter means audio reaches that OBS meter stage, so check mute, fader, filters, audio monitoring, and the track sent to the stream. Then make a short test recording and check YouTube Live Control Room before changing the media file.

1. Confirm the media source is playing

Make sure the source is present in the active scene, visible or otherwise active as intended, and that playback has started. A meter cannot move before the file produces audio.

Built-in Media Source

Open the source properties and verify the file path and selected file. OBS documents video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check properties such as Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive if the source stops or restarts unexpectedly. The built-in Media Source and VLC Video are different source types; do not look for VLC’s audio-track control in the built-in source. OBS Media Sources

VLC Video playlist

VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. In its properties, verify the playlist item and the Audio Track selector. OBS documents track 1 as the default; if a file has multiple audio streams, select the intended one. OBS Media Sources

2. Find out whether audio reaches the source meter

Watch the meter for the media source in the OBS Audio Mixer while the sound should be playing. Do not rely only on the Desktop Audio meter: the relevant question is whether the particular media source is producing audio in OBS.

  • No movement: Recheck playback, the active scene, the selected file or playlist item, and VLC installation if this is VLC Video. If you are capturing application or device audio rather than using a media source, verify that the intended capture source is present and configured for your operating system.
  • Movement: Audio is reaching the meter’s measurement stage, but that alone does not show that it is assigned to the live stream output. Continue to the routing checks below.

OBS explains that the input-level indicator is after filters but before the fader. If the indicator is absent, no audio is reaching that measurement point; the guide also notes that this can simply mean no audio is available yet, for example before a media file starts. 3. If the meter moves, check OBS routing and processing

Mute, fader, and filters

In the mixer, make sure the source is not muted and its fader is not turned down. If the meter moves but the signal seems absent or unexpectedly low, temporarily disable source filters to isolate whether processing is suppressing it. Because the meter is positioned after filters and before the fader, compare the meter with the fader and output state rather than treating meter movement as proof of a usable stream signal.

Audio monitoring is for listening, not stream routing

Open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties (or use the mixer’s gear menu) and inspect the source’s monitoring setting. Configure the monitoring device in OBS Settings, then listen through that device to confirm the source can be heard on the monitor path. Existing headphones or speakers are sufficient if they work; buying headphones will not repair a routing problem. Hearing the source through monitoring does not establish that it is sent to YouTube. Check the stream track assignment

In Advanced Audio Properties, check which audio track is assigned to the source. Then, in the installed OBS version’s applicable streaming output settings, confirm which track is selected for streaming. The names and locations of controls can vary by OBS release, so distinguish the active streaming track from Settings → Output recording-track options.

OBS’s multiple-track guide discusses recording: ordinary video players generally play one audio track, and the guide recommends putting all sources on track 1 for standard playback when separate editing tracks are not needed. That recording guidance does not confirm which track your current stream uses. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide

Device capture and duplicate audio paths

If the sound comes from an application or audio device captured as a scene source, verify the intended device is selected and active. OBS warns that capturing a device directly in a scene can cause echo if the same device is also selected globally in Settings → Audio; disable the duplicate global capture when you deliberately capture it as a scene source. Device-capture instructions differ among Windows, macOS, and Linux, so follow the guidance for your operating system rather than assuming one universal device path. OBS Audio Sources

4. Make a local test before diagnosing YouTube

  1. In OBS, keep the same scene and media source you intend to stream.
  2. Record a short test while the media plays.
  3. Listen to the resulting local recording. If it is silent, keep troubleshooting the source and OBS routing. If it contains the media audio, OBS has produced a recording with sound, but that does not by itself prove that the live stream is using the same output track.
  4. Before going live, check the mixer meters and test the actual stream path. OBS recommends a brief test; YouTube advises checking sound in the encoder and comparing it with a local archive. OBS Quick Start Guide · YouTube live-stream troubleshooting

5. Read the YouTube Live Control Room warning

If the local recording has sound but the live preview or stream does not, check the event’s Live Control Room health information and the encoder’s output. YouTube’s error guidance identifies several possible audio-ingestion problems:

  • Multiple audio streams: YouTube’s guidance warns that multiple streams can cause ingestion problems.
  • Unsupported audio codec: The help page lists AAC or MP3 in its codec guidance.
  • Sample rate or bitrate warning: YouTube’s cited audio error guidance refers to 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Treat those as guidance associated with the error, not universal settings for every protocol or future version; follow the current dashboard message and help page for your event.

YouTube live-stream error messages explains the reported issues. YouTube also recommends previewing in Live Control Room and continuously monitoring audio and video quality: YouTube streaming tips. If OBS’s local archive has sound but the preview is silent, investigate the encoder output, stream health, outbound connection, or YouTube delivery rather than repeatedly replacing a file that plays correctly locally.
