If an OBS stream buffers during evening peak hours on Airtel broadband, first check whether OBS is actually dropping network frames. Rising network drops point to an unstable or insufficient connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server; viewers buffering while OBS reports no network drops points to a different problem, such as playback conditions or a bitrate that is demanding for some viewers. Neither symptom alone proves Airtel is throttling your stream.
First distinguish OBS network drops from viewer buffering
Open OBS’s Stats window while the problem is happening. Note network dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. Network dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, according to OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance (updated 2024-09-30).
- Network dropped frames rise: investigate the upload path between your computer and YouTube, including Wi-Fi, competing traffic, bitrate, and the route to the ingest server.
- Network drops stay at zero, but viewers report buffering: do not treat those reports alone as proof of a failed Airtel upload. Viewers have different devices and connections, and a high bitrate may make playback harder for some of them. OBS discusses this separately in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guidance (updated 2021-06-09).
- Rendering or encoding lag rises: record it too. Those counters identify other possible bottlenecks and should not be confused with network drops.
Write down the date and time, OBS counters, bitrate, and whether the computer is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This gives you a useful baseline rather than relying on a speed test taken at another time.

Run a comparable test during and outside peak hours
Test the same OBS setup during the affected evening period and at an off-peak time. Use audio and movement representative of the intended stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing the actual encoder setup and watching stream health rather than relying only on advertised upload speed; see its live encoder settings and bitrates guidance.

- Use a private or otherwise controlled test stream if appropriate for your channel.
- Keep resolution, frame rate, encoder, and content activity consistent between tests.
- Record OBS’s network dropped-frame percentage and any YouTube stream-health warnings with their timestamps.
- Repeat at both times. A brief speed test or a broadband plan’s stated speed does not establish sustained upload capacity during the evening issue.
If only the evening test fails, that is evidence of a time-dependent problem worth investigating, not proof of its cause. The issue could be local, along the route to YouTube, or elsewhere; the available Airtel QoS page does not provide area-specific performance values that would establish a local fault.
Work through the fixes in order
1. Test Ethernet and reduce competing traffic
Connect the streaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the evening test. This checks whether the local Wi-Fi link is contributing to instability. If you need a cable, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical option; it can address the local wireless segment, but it cannot fix congestion in Airtel’s network.

Pause other uploads and backups, close unnecessary applications, and reduce avoidable traffic from other devices. If you use a VPN or network-prioritizing software, temporarily test without it. OBS also recommends checking the router, cable, network card, security software, and drivers when connection troubleshooting continues.
2. Lower bitrate to a level that holds during the affected period
Reduce OBS’s output bitrate below the setting that fails, then repeat the same evening test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for lowering bitrate, but this is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee of stable peak-hour capacity. Adjust based on repeated results when the issue occurs.

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following examples. They are encoder recommendations, not measurements of Airtel performance or guarantees that your connection can sustain the rate:

The listed rates show why resolution alone does not determine the required bitrate: frame rate matters too. Choose a YouTube-supported encoder configuration, then prioritize the bitrate your connection sustains during the affected time. If necessary, lower resolution or frame rate as well.

3. Treat dynamic bitrate as a workaround, not a repair
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames. The trade-off is that image quality can fall, and the setting does not fix the underlying network issue. Use it only if adapting quality is preferable to dropped frames, and keep recording the results.

If practical, test another streaming destination with comparable settings. If it works while YouTube does not, that narrows the investigation toward the service or route, but does not identify the exact point of failure. A different result is a clue, not proof that Airtel or YouTube is responsible.

When and how to contact Airtel
If network drops continue after the wired, traffic-reduction, and bitrate tests, contact Airtel support with concrete evidence. Include the dates and exact times, OBS logs and dropped-frame percentages, configured bitrate, YouTube stream-health messages, whether you used Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and your comparable off-peak results. A recurring evening pattern justifies escalation; it does not establish throttling or show which network segment is responsible.
Do not replace your router as the first response unless your tests point to local hardware trouble. A router replacement cannot correct a problem farther along the connection route.
