A scene change can stop, pause, restart, or briefly reload an OBS playlist source—but that alone does not prove your YouTube broadcast has disconnected. To find the cause, reproduce the scene change while recording locally, check OBS Stats and its log, and compare OBS output with the incoming-stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Those checks show whether the failure is in the media source, rendering or encoding, or the connection to YouTube. Without the relevant source settings and log, there is no reliable way to name one cause.
First distinguish a stopped playlist from an offline broadcast
OBS scenes determine which sources appear in the program output. A playlist can stop or reload when its scene becomes inactive, while OBS may continue streaming normally. Conversely, a stream can lose its connection even when playlist playback looks normal.
- Playlist problem: The video or its audio stops, freezes, or restarts when you change scenes, but OBS remains connected and YouTube continues receiving the stream.
- Broadcast problem: OBS reports a disconnect or reconnect, its bitrate falls or connection-related dropped frames rise, or YouTube Live Control Room reports that it is not receiving data.
- Encoder or rendering problem: The local output also freezes, goes black, loses audio, or shows rendering or encoding lag at the scene change.
Check OBS and YouTube separately. A playlist interruption is not, by itself, evidence that YouTube marked the broadcast offline.

Record locally while testing
Start a local recording, then switch to and from the playlist scene in the same way that triggers the problem. Check whether the recording freezes, goes black, loses audio, or plays normally. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends inspecting the encoder output, encoder errors, and CPU load before moving on to the connection.

Watch OBS and YouTube at the same time
During the test, note the exact time of the scene change and look for:
- OBS disconnecting, reconnecting, or stopping its output.
- A bitrate drop or a rise in connection-related dropped frames in OBS Stats.
- Rendering or encoding lag, or encoder errors in OBS.
- YouTube Live Control Room reporting that it is no longer receiving data.
OBS associates dropped frames with a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. If the local recording is healthy but OBS or YouTube shows a receiving or connection failure, investigate the connection path. If the recording or encoder output fails at the scene change, isolate the source or system workload first.

Check the playlist source’s behavior when its scene is hidden
Identify which source type you use before changing settings: OBS has a regular Media Source and a VLC Video source that supports playlists. Their controls differ, and a source becoming inactive is not the same as the broadcast stopping.

Open the VLC Video source’s properties and inspect Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour. Loop Playlist controls whether playback begins again after the playlist runs out. Visibility Behaviour determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is hidden. OBS documents stopping while not visible and restarting when visible as the default behavior. That describes playback, not YouTube’s broadcast state.

For a regular Media Source
Open the Media Source properties and check Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive. OBS notes that closing the file while inactive unloads the media and may cause a short delay when the source is shown again. Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same local-recording test so you can tell which change affected playback.
Use a minimal scene to isolate the trigger
- Create or select a simple scene without the playlist, browser overlays, or third-party plugins.
- Test the same stream and scene-switch sequence while recording locally.
- If the simple scene works, add the playlist and other elements back one at a time. Capture the OBS log during each test.
- If the simple scene also fails, look beyond the playlist and investigate OBS output, encoding, rendering, and the network path.
This is a controlled way to narrow down a source-based scene problem, not a diagnosis of any particular setup. If the failure follows one source or complex scene, focus on those elements. If it also happens in a minimal scene, the playlist is less likely to be the trigger.

Read OBS Stats and the log around the failure time
Use the timestamp from your reproduction to inspect OBS Stats and the log. Look for output disconnects or reconnects, dropped frames associated with connection stalls, encoder errors, and rendering or encoding lag. Interpret those signs alongside the local recording and YouTube’s incoming-stream status rather than treating any one counter as proof of a playlist fault.
- Local recording fails or encoder/rendering errors appear: Prioritize the source, plugin, rendering, encoder, or system workload associated with the scene change.
- Local recording looks healthy, but connection-related dropped frames or disconnects appear: Follow network diagnostics for the route between OBS and YouTube’s ingest server.
- OBS appears connected, but YouTube reports no incoming data: Compare the timestamps and OBS output status, then check the connection and stream configuration rather than assuming the playlist is responsible.
OBS Project says in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide that “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement is specifically about dropped frames; it does not mean OBS can never have any kind of streaming problem.

Test the outbound connection if the evidence points to transport
YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection after checking encoder output, errors, and CPU load. If that test finds a connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. OBS also suggests checking network configuration and possible interference from a VPN or security software.
A speed test can help identify a problem, but it does not prove that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. When possible, compare network behavior during a reproduced scene-change incident. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance; verify your encoder’s configured connection against YouTube’s current guidance if you are reviewing stream setup.
