In OBS Studio 28 and newer, open Tools → obs-websocket Settings, enable the server and password authentication, then configure your client with OBS’s host, port, and password. YouTube’s stream URL and stream key are separate encoder settings.
What OBS WebSocket controls—and what it does not
OBS WebSocket is OBS’s remote-control interface. A compatible app can send commands to OBS to control scenes and sources, which can help automate a loop-stream setup or operate OBS from another device. OBS says WebSocket has been built in since OBS Studio 28. See the OBS Remote Control Guide.
It is not the YouTube connection. OBS WebSocket credentials authorize control of OBS; YouTube’s stream URL and stream key tell the encoder where to send video and authorize YouTube to accept it. Configure and protect those separately.
Find and configure OBS WebSocket
- Use OBS Studio 28 or newer where possible. WebSocket is included by default in that release line. Older OBS versions may require installing the plugin; check the obs-websocket project page for version details.
- Open Tools → obs-websocket Settings. Confirm the WebSocket server is enabled. The settings window shows the port in use.
- Enable authentication and set a strong, unique password. OBS recommends password protection. Treat this as an administrative credential: someone with access may control OBS scenes and sources.
- Note the configured port. OBS WebSocket 5.x uses port 4455 by default, but it can be changed in settings. Your client must use the actual configured port, not assume the default.
- Connect a compatible client. Enter the OBS host, configured port, and WebSocket password in the client’s connection settings. OBS lists clients including Streamer.bot, Macro Deck, Touch Portal, and OBS Blade in its Remote Control Guide. Their availability and terms are set by their respective developers.
Secure the remote-control connection
- Keep authentication enabled and do not share the password with an untrusted client or service.
- Limit access to trusted clients and networks. Do not expose the OBS WebSocket port publicly; the official documentation does not prescribe a universal remote-access network design.
- If you no longer trust a client or believe the WebSocket password was exposed, change it in OBS WebSocket settings and update any clients that should remain connected.
Connect OBS to YouTube separately
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream. YouTube’s process differs for scheduled streams and instant streaming; follow the applicable workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Set OBS’s stream destination and credentials. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, or configure the service with the YouTube stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. The stream URL and key are ingest credentials—not the WebSocket host, port, or password.
- Start the encoder feed from OBS. Depending on the stream workflow, YouTube Live Control Room may also require you to select Go live after the feed arrives.
- Use WebSocket for OBS actions. Once connected, use the client to control the OBS scenes or sources your workflow needs. Build and test the scene in OBS first. A looped video is a media/source configuration, but the cited OBS remote-control documentation does not establish a definitive loop toggle or playlist workflow.
YouTube describes a stream key as a password and address for the encoder. Keep it private. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS; otherwise the encoder may continue sending with credentials that no longer work. See Manage live stream settings.

Test the whole loop-stream workflow
Before relying on remote or unattended operation, test both control and delivery: connect the client, issue the OBS scene/source actions you need, start the encoder feed, and confirm the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room. WebSocket connectivity does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, and it does not keep OBS or the streaming computer running.
If the client cannot connect
- Confirm the OBS WebSocket server is enabled in Tools → obs-websocket Settings.
- Check that the client is pointed at the correct OBS host and the port shown in settings. Port 4455 is the 5.x default, not a guarantee if it has been changed.
- Re-enter the current password and verify the client supports the WebSocket version in your OBS installation.
- Check that network access between the client and OBS is permitted on the trusted network you intend to use. Do not solve a connection issue by exposing the port publicly.
If YouTube does not receive the stream
- Check the OBS streaming service, stream URL, and stream key. WebSocket settings do not configure ingest.
- Check whether the YouTube workflow requires a manual Go live action in Live Control Room.
- If a stream key was reset, update OBS to use the replacement key.
If the stream drops frames or disconnects
OBS attributes dropped frames and disconnections to an unstable connection or the inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Check the network connection, streaming server selection, and bitrate rather than changing WebSocket settings. Follow the steps in OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Remote control and stream delivery are separate problems.
