Choose OBS if church volunteers need a visual interface for worship graphics, scene changes, and hands-on control. Choose FFmpeg if playback is a fixed prerecorded file or sequence and someone can configure and supervise a command-line process. Neither is inherently more reliable: both depend on a correctly configured YouTube stream, a stable internet connection, monitoring, and a recovery plan. If you would rather not keep a local computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for prerecorded YouTube streams.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your church?

Consideration OBS FFmpeg
How you operate it Visual streaming software, useful when a volunteer needs to see and control a composed program. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. YouTube’s live streaming tools Command-line media tool suited to a configured file-playback or processing pipeline. The operator must maintain the command and its host environment. FFmpeg documentation
Strongest fit for this use Worship programming with scene changes, overlays, or graphics that an operator may adjust during the broadcast. Fixed prerecorded playback, looping, or a scripted sequence where a visual production interface is not needed.
Looping and stream handling Can act as the streaming encoder. The reviewed documentation does not establish a specific OBS playlist configuration for this exact church workflow. Supports options including -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping and -re for reading input at its native rate. Stream copy with -c copy can avoid decoding and re-encoding when the input is compatible with the output requirements. FFmpeg documentation
Monitoring Shows connection status and dropped-frame information. OBS says it connects directly to the streaming destination rather than through OBS-operated servers. OBS connection troubleshooting Monitoring and restart behavior depend on the configured process, logs, supervisor, and host; looping by itself does not provide a complete recovery system.
Cost and equipment The software is listed by YouTube as no-charge, open-source software; a capable computer and someone to keep it operating are still needed. The software is a command-line tool; the reviewed sources do not establish total ownership costs. A computer or server and a technically capable operator may be needed.

This is a workflow recommendation, not a head-to-head reliability test. There is no basis here to claim either option has better uptime for a church’s 24/7 broadcast.

What both methods need from YouTube

Enable live streaming and get the ingest details

Enable live streaming for the channel in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and give your encoder the server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Use compatible video and audio settings

YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video with RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists stereo AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps among its recommended advanced settings. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings when configuring the stream.

For 1080p30, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 lists these video bitrate figures:

Codec Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
H.264 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee your church’s internet connection can sustain the stream. Choose settings based on a measured, stable upload connection and allow headroom for normal network variation. If the video file’s codec or settings are incompatible with the intended ingest, stream copying may not work; use an encoding workflow that produces a compatible output instead.

Set up and operate the stream

With OBS

  1. Prepare the channel. Enable live streaming ahead of time, then create or select the event in YouTube Studio and copy its server URL and stream key.
  2. Configure the stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. Select RTMPS if the available service configuration exposes that option; consult current OBS and YouTube guidance for the exact connection setup.
  3. Set output and video parameters. In Settings > Output and Settings > Video, choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that YouTube accepts and your upload connection can sustain. For RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); for 1080p30, use the YouTube bitrate guidance above as a reference, not a substitute for connection testing.
  4. Add the prerecorded program. Build the scenes and media sources the operator needs. For continuous playback, configure and verify the media-source or playlist behavior in the OBS version you are using; the sources cited here do not prescribe a church-specific OBS looping setup.
  5. Test before relying on it. Run a representative stream with the same movement and audio conditions expected during worship. Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators.
  6. Keep a person responsible. A visual interface makes manual changes accessible, but it does not remove the need to check the stream, computer, network, and recovery procedure.

With FFmpeg

  1. Prepare the channel and credentials. Enable live streaming, create or select the event in YouTube Studio, and retrieve the server URL and stream key. Keep the key out of public scripts and logs where possible.
  2. Check the input file. Confirm its video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio format. Stream copy is only appropriate when the existing streams suit YouTube ingest; otherwise, configure encoding to meet the platform settings.
  3. Build the output URL securely. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL and the stream key in the format required by the ingest destination. Avoid sharing a command containing the key in screenshots, public repositories, or support messages.
  4. Configure paced playback and looping. FFmpeg’s documented options include -re to read at native rate and -stream_loop -1 to loop indefinitely. A command pattern for a compatible file is ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY". Replace the URL and key with the values from YouTube Studio, and check current FFmpeg and YouTube requirements before using it. FFmpeg’s options documentation explains stream looping and stream copy.
  5. Test, observe, and supervise. Confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream and inspect FFmpeg output and host/network health. A command that loops a file does not automatically restart after every failure; arrange appropriate process supervision and alerting for your environment.

Test the actual 24/7 operation, not just the encoder

Before making a continuous broadcast part of church communications, test with representative worship content and observe both the incoming stream and playback. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and watching stream health. In OBS, rising dropped-frame counts point to a connection that is unstable or a bitrate it cannot sustain. A short successful test does not establish that a computer, network, or process will stay healthy indefinitely, so decide who checks alerts and what they do when the stream stops.

  • Verify the stream key and destination without exposing credentials.
  • Confirm audio is present, intelligible, and at the expected level throughout the file.
  • Watch for dropped frames, stream-health warnings, and host resource or network problems.
  • Test what happens at the end of the file or playlist, including whether looping behaves as intended.
  • Document who is authorized to stop or restart the broadcast and where the recovery steps are kept.

Plan separately for YouTube archives and worship-content rights

Do not rely on one 24-hour event being archived as a single video

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be automatically archived as one video. If the church needs recordings for later viewing, arrange a separate recording and archive process, and verify YouTube Studio’s current workflow rather than assuming a continuous event will produce the desired archive. Confirm rights before looping worship recordings

A church’s permission to perform or use a song in one setting does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a recording on YouTube. Confirm that the church has the rights needed for the specific music, recording, images, and other material in the stream, and follow applicable platform requirements. A live encoder cannot resolve copyright or other content-rights issues; review permissions for every item in the loop before broadcasting.

What to compare before using any hosted service

A hosted service can shift local computer upkeep to a service provider, but introduces a dependency on that provider. Before choosing a service, review its terms, pricing, support, and recovery arrangements and confirm that its workflow meets the church’s archive and content-rights needs. YouTube’s directory identifies cloud tools for continuous prerecorded streaming, but that listing alone does not establish comparative reliability, pricing, or other service terms. YouTube’s live streaming tools

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a stream Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the encoder has an incorrect server URL or stream key. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement; confirm the event’s current ingest details in YouTube Studio and re-enter them securely.
Stream-health warnings or dropped frames The upload connection is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Check OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators, YouTube stream health, and the connection under normal operating conditions. Lower the output demands if the connection cannot reliably sustain them.
FFmpeg exits or stops sending The process, host, network, input file, or output connection has failed; looping does not itself restart a failed process. Inspect FFmpeg logs and host/network status, verify the file and destination, and test the configured supervisor and restart procedure.
Playback stops at the end instead of repeating The playlist or loop behavior is not configured as intended. Test the full file-end transition before going live; for FFmpeg, verify the placement and behavior of -stream_loop -1 with the selected input and command.
Audio is missing or sounds wrong The source file, selected audio stream, codec, channel layout, or bitrate may not match the intended output. Test the exact recording end to end, confirm an audio stream is included and audible, and use a YouTube-compatible AAC or MP3 configuration.
No single archive appears for a 24-hour broadcast YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed uninterrupted 24-hour archive. Use a separate recording/archive plan and check current YouTube Studio options.
