Choose OBS if you need a visual interface, scenes, overlays, or hands-on switching between sources. Choose FFmpeg if you want a scripted media pipeline that loops or sequences files and publishes directly to YouTube. Neither is inherently more reliable: a 24/7 stream also needs tested media, monitoring, and recovery beyond simply leaving an encoder running.
OBS vs. FFmpeg: which fits your stream?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scenes, overlays, and visual source switching | OBS | OBS provides a graphical production interface for composing and controlling a stream. |
| A repeatable command-line process that loops or sequences media | FFmpeg | FFmpeg can publish media directly to an ingest endpoint as part of a scripted pipeline. |
| Recovery from interruptions | Neither wins by default | Both offer relevant reconnect capabilities, but those controls do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Supervision, alerting, and testing matter. |
This is a workflow choice, not a universal reliability ranking. OBS’s visual controls suit operators who want to manage a production interactively; FFmpeg suits operators comfortable configuring and supervising a command-line process.
Configure YouTube ingest before choosing output settings
In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access may be able to send video to your broadcast. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Use settings that match the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
These are recommendations for the listed codec and frame rates, not guarantees that an internet connection with the same upload speed will be sufficient. Allow upload headroom and account for other traffic on the connection. YouTube publishes separate bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265; check its live encoder settings for the codec and output you intend to use.
Test representative playback, not just a connection
Before committing to a long broadcast, test the actual files and settings. Include movement and audio like those in the planned stream, then check YouTube’s stream health. A static image or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with motion or sound. Higher frame rates can also increase encoding load; OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps, so test the machine under the intended conditions.

Run a prerecorded stream with OBS
OBS is the more direct choice when you want to build a visible scene around prerecorded playback. Interface labels can vary across OBS versions, so confirm the controls in your installed version and test the full loop rather than assuming a playlist will run unattended indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Prepare your YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream, complete any required first-time enablement, and obtain the stream URL and key.
- Add and arrange playback sources. In OBS, add the prerecorded video source or sources to a scene. Arrange any overlays or additional sources, and verify that the intended content is visible and audible.
- Set the stream connection. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or configure the server URL, and enter the stream key. Treat the key as a credential.
- Set output and video parameters. In Settings → Output, set an appropriate bitrate and CBR where available. In Settings → Video, choose a resolution and frame rate consistent with the media and your system’s capacity. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and use a supported codec and audio format for YouTube ingest.
- Configure reconnect and test. OBS provides automatic reconnect controls. Enable and configure them for your needs, then test playback, audio, stream health, and recovery behavior before relying on the setup. Reconnect is not a substitute for process supervision or alerting.
- Start the encoder and monitor it. Starting OBS sends the configured stream to YouTube. Check the stream in YouTube Studio and keep an eye on health indicators and the running machine.
OBS supports production controls and FFmpeg output options, but no single playlist-loop configuration is established here as a version-independent procedure. Verify looping and transitions in your OBS version with the exact files you will broadcast.

Publish a prerecorded stream with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a fit when the sequence and output can be described reproducibly in a command or script. The exact command depends on the media’s codecs, file layout, installed FFmpeg build, and desired loop or sequence behavior. Do not treat a generic script as validated for every source file or build.
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Obtain the ingest URL and stream key. Use RTMPS where supported and keep the key out of public scripts, logs, and source repositories.
- Choose how media is sequenced. Decide whether the job plays one file repeatedly or advances through a sequence. Confirm that the chosen FFmpeg input and looping approach behaves as intended with your files; test transitions and end-of-file behavior before broadcast.
- Set the output deliberately. Configure the output for YouTube’s recommended CBR behavior, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), supported video and audio codecs, and a bitrate suited to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Publish to the ingest endpoint. Use FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing syntax with the YouTube endpoint and stream key. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection; consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the syntax and options applicable to your installed build.
- Supervise the process. FFmpeg documentation includes reconnect options for applicable network protocols, but input-side HTTP reconnect options should not be mistaken for automatic recovery from every RTMP publishing failure. Verify the behavior of your chosen output and protocol, and use external process supervision and alerting if the stream must recover without an operator.
- Test and monitor the live output. Run a representative test, check YouTube stream health, and verify that the process continues through the intended media sequence. Stopping the encoder stops sending content to YouTube.
Because a correct command depends on the source and installed build, validate the actual script rather than copying an untested command from a different setup.

Plan for interruptions and 24/7 operation
A reconnect checkbox or a long-running process is only one layer of resilience. For a continuous broadcast, identify who or what will notice an encoder exit, a dropped connection, failed media playback, or degraded ingest, and how the encoder will be restarted. Test those failure and recovery paths before depending on them. There is no documented universal uptime advantage for OBS or FFmpeg; reliability depends on the complete deployment.
Know the archive boundary
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration boundary, so do not assume the entire continuous stream will be available as one automatic archive. Plan separately for any recording or archive you need. Details are in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Follow YouTube’s content rules
Using prerecorded footage does not remove copyright or monetization considerations. Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music and other embedded content, and review YouTube’s policies that apply to your channel and broadcast. Reusing material does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements; assess the content and applicable YouTube rules rather than assuming that continuous playback is sufficient.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: playback runs from the cloud.
- Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.
The monthly price is $9.99 per month. Plans are available for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year, and can be cancelled at any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Five or more slots: contact support. See StreamNeo pricing for the plan details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 24/7 stream have to use OBS or FFmpeg?
No. A hosted cloud service can play uploaded videos to YouTube without leaving a local encoder running.
Does OBS automatically make a 24/7 broadcast reliable?
No. Its reconnect control is one recovery measure; the full setup still needs testing, monitoring, and a plan for failures.
