Choose OBS Studio if you want a graphical workspace to arrange story artwork, scenes, overlays, audio and a live preview. Choose FFmpeg if the broadcast is a fixed sequence of media and you are comfortable defining and supervising a command-driven pipeline. Neither tool has been shown to be the more reliable choice for a 24/7 stream: continuous operation depends on the actual machine, connection, configuration, monitoring and recovery plan.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your story channel?
Both can send a video stream to YouTube, but they suit different production workflows. OBS is an integrated graphical application for capturing, compositing, encoding, recording and streaming; FFmpeg is a command-line media tool for explicitly describing input, processing and output operations. Those documented roles support a workflow recommendation—not a head-to-head performance or reliability claim. OBS Studio · FFmpeg documentation
| What matters | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A creator who wants to compose scenes, artwork, overlays and audio visually, and preview the result. | An operator who can describe a repeatable media pipeline in commands or scripts. |
| Typical story-show setup | Useful when you combine sources or want to switch or adjust visual and audio elements during production. | Useful when the program is essentially a predetermined file sequence with repeatable processing. |
| Control style | Graphical controls and a production preview. | Explicit command-line input, processing and output operations. |
| 24/7 reliability evidence | No controlled comparison or sustained reliability result establishes an advantage. | No controlled comparison or sustained reliability result establishes an advantage. |
| Hardware fit | Load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS cautions that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. | Load depends on the inputs, filters, codecs, output settings and available system resources. No apples-to-apples hardware benchmark is established. |
If you are choosing for the first time, start with OBS when seeing and adjusting the complete composition matters more than scripting. Start with FFmpeg when you can maintain the commands and want the media flow to be repeatable. Either choice needs a test on the machine and network you intend to use.
Set the YouTube stream parameters before building the show
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. These are destination requirements and recommendations; they do not guarantee a stable stream on a particular connection. YouTube encoder settings

Use bitrate figures that match the output
The following H.264 figures are published by YouTube Help and accessed in 2026. They are examples for the stated resolution and frame rate, not a universal preset for every story stream.
| Output example | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
Choose a reliable output based on the available upload connection, then test it with representative motion and audio. The figures above do not establish the right bitrate for other resolutions, frame rates or ingest codecs. Leave enough connection capacity for the stream to remain steady rather than treating a listed recommended bitrate as proof that the home connection can sustain it.

Match keyframes and audio too
- Keyframes: use a 2-second interval where supported; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check the actual narration and music mix, not only whether an encoder reports that it is running.
- Video mode: use CBR as YouTube recommends for live ingest.
Build and test the local encoder workflow
The exact controls differ by software, operating system and media pipeline. The important part is to create a complete, repeatable path from the story files and audio through the encoder to YouTube, and then verify the result in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on it.

- Prepare the program: organize the story video or visual sources, artwork, narration and any music. Decide whether you need a single scene or several scenes and overlays.
- Configure the production: set the intended output resolution and frame rate, choose an encoder the machine can sustain, and set the video rate control and bitrate to match the YouTube ingest configuration you plan to use. The CPU load can change with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
- Set the destination: connect OBS to the YouTube live event using the event’s stream credentials. Treat the stream key as a secret; do not show it in a recording, screenshot or public scene.
- Preview before going public: check the image, narration level, music balance and transitions in OBS, then confirm YouTube receives the intended picture and sound in its Live Control Room preview.
- Run a representative test: use the same files, movement, audio, output settings, machine and network planned for the live broadcast. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, audio gaps and YouTube stream-health messages.
OBS recommends its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. It does not remove the need to test the actual show at the chosen settings. OBS system requirements

With FFmpeg
- Define the media path: identify the exact input files and sequence, any processing needed, the video and audio codecs, output resolution and frame rate, and the YouTube ingest destination.
- Make the pipeline repeatable: document the input order and output settings in the command or script you will use. Confirm how the sequence is expected to continue and what the operator must do if an input is missing or the process exits.
- Match YouTube’s ingest guidance: use a supported ingest protocol and codec, CBR, the intended bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and an appropriate audio configuration.
- Test the complete output: run the same media and settings on the intended machine, verify the received stream in YouTube’s preview, listen to the full audio path and inspect stream-health messages.
- Plan supervision: decide how process failure will be noticed, who can restart or repair it, and whether a backup encoder or network path is warranted for your operation.
FFmpeg’s exact invocation depends on the chosen input, filters, codecs and output. The documented role of the tool supports command-driven media processing, but the available evidence does not establish a single command or hardware configuration that guarantees uninterrupted children’s-story streaming. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options appropriate to your actual pipeline.
Make 24/7 operation an operating plan, not an encoder setting
YouTube’s live-streaming checklist is useful for a continuous channel even though it does not promise 24/7 uptime. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder event at least 2 hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Apply the preview, failover and monitoring checks before you rely on a long-running broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips

Preflight and monitoring checklist
- Confirm the correct channel and event, stream credentials, story sequence, artwork and audio are in use.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before the stream begins; verify the intended picture and sound arrive at YouTube.
- Test the planned failure response by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet, as YouTube’s guidance describes. Confirm that your operator recognizes the interruption and knows what to do next.
- If recording an archive locally, check that the file is intact and continues to grow as expected.
- Check that the channel, watch page and stream are accessible on the devices your audience is likely to use, including mobile.
- Continuously monitor audio and video quality and respond to stream-health warnings rather than assuming a running encoder means a healthy broadcast.
A UPS, spare encoder or redundant network connection can be considered as operational choices; YouTube does not specify them as requirements. The right arrangement depends on your equipment, location, budget and tolerance for interruptions. No uptime figure or 24/7 soak-test result establishes that OBS or FFmpeg is inherently more stable.

Protect the children’s audience and the content
Set the audience designation accurately
If the channel or stream is designated as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on made-for-kids live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may still appear. Review the audience designation for the actual content and account rather than choosing it to preserve a feature. YouTube restrictions for made-for-kids content and minors
Apply the minors rule to the situation it covers
YouTube says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. This concerns minors appearing in the stream; it should not be treated as a rule automatically triggered by prerecorded illustrations with adult narration. YouTube also advises protecting personal information and moderating chat where chat is available. YouTube restrictions
Clear rights for every part of the program
Before streaming or archiving, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the story text, edition, illustrations, music, narration or other recordings. YouTube lists an active copyright strike and a match with another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons live-streaming restrictions can apply. The status of a particular story or recording depends on the work, edition, territory and rights involved; the encoder cannot establish permission. YouTube restrictions
