For one repeating shloka recording, add an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of multiple recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC with the same 32- or 64-bit architecture as OBS, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Those settings repeat media; they do not keep a crashed computer, OBS, power supply, or internet connection running. For a reliable all-day broadcast, test the full setup, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and decide how you will recover from interruptions.

Choose the right OBS source for your shloka audio and video

One recording: Media Source

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene, then click + under Sources and choose Media Source.
  2. Name the source and select the local recording file. OBS Media Source supports common video and audio formats.
  3. Enable Loop. It is off by default. Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default; leave it on if you want playback to begin at the start whenever the source becomes active.
  4. Start the scene and listen through the OBS audio mixer or a private test stream. Confirm the picture or intended still visual is visible and the sound is routed to the stream.

OBS documents the Media Source controls in its Media Sources guide.

Several recordings: VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. The OBS guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; use matching architectures.
  2. In OBS, click + under Sources and select VLC Video.
  3. Add the shloka files to the playlist in the order you want them played, then confirm the selected files are available to VLC on the streaming computer.
  4. Keep Loop Playlist enabled; it is on by default. Shuffle Playlist is off by default, which preserves the playlist order.
  5. Test the transition from the final item back to the first, including audio levels and any gaps or black frames.

Media Source is simpler for one file; VLC Video is the practical choice when OBS needs to cycle through several files. Both loop playback, not the broadcast infrastructure.

Configure YouTube and OBS securely

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Use the stream URL and key shown for that stream in OBS’s YouTube service/server settings.
  2. Choose RTMPS when available for encryption in transit to Google’s servers. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists RTMP, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoder options.
  3. Treat the stream key as a password. YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not include it in screenshots, public instructions, or logs; reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  4. Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. Confirm how they behave for your intended broadcast rather than assuming OBS’s connection alone starts or ends the YouTube stream.
  5. Start OBS, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and verify both video and audio before making the stream public. Use an unlisted or otherwise suitable test first.

See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance for stream keys and stream controls.

Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the material and connection

Use an output resolution and frame rate that suit the actual recordings, the computer doing the encoding, and the upload connection. A static devotional playlist generally has no reason to use 60 fps merely because YouTube accepts it. Lower settings can reduce encoding and network demands, but test the actual picture and sound before settling on them.

YouTube’s encoder table lists the following H.264 examples; its surfaced settings page does not state a publication year. They are reference points, not guarantees of stable service or universal targets.

H.264 output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These values are specific to H.264 and the stated resolution/frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the codec and output you choose; bitrate recommendations differ by codec and format.

  • In OBS, set the encoder output to CBR and use a 2-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Test sustained upload with the stream’s representative audio and video. A speed-test result alone does not show that the connection will sustain the stream continuously.
  • Preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health while testing. Adjust output resolution or bitrate if YouTube reports instability or the picture is unsuitable.
  • Prefer a wired connection if practical, but Ethernet is optional and does not guarantee reliability. A local internet or power outage can still interrupt the stream.

Test the full playlist before leaving it live

  1. Play every item locally and confirm the ordering, loop point, supported formats, and volume balance.
  2. In OBS, check that the selected scene remains visible, the media source does not unexpectedly stop, and audio reaches the stream.
  3. Send a test broadcast to YouTube and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status.
  4. Let the test run long enough to reveal playlist transitions and sustained-network or encoding problems; check again after changing settings.
  5. Decide how you will notice and recover from an OBS crash, computer restart, power loss, or dropped connection. Looping media does not restart the encoder or reconnect the network.
  6. If you also record locally, monitor available disk space: a long recording can grow substantially. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a planned 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so do not assume the full broadcast will be archived automatically. Save a local copy or arrange separate archiving if a durable archive matters.

YouTube’s event guidance advises setting up an encoder ahead of time, previewing, monitoring audio and video, and checking archive growth when recording. Those checks are useful for a continuous playlist, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for Sanskrit content

Confirm the rights for every recording and asset you stream. A Sanskrit recitation, its translation, artwork, and background music may each have different rights holders. Verify permission or a suitable license for the exact version and intended livestream use; the technical setup does not establish that a particular recording is cleared.

  • Keep records of licenses or permissions for audio, translated text, visual artwork, and any background track.
  • Do not assume that a devotional or traditional subject makes a modern recording, arrangement, translation, or image free to use.
  • Check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and the assets you plan to broadcast.

What a local OBS setup depends on

With OBS, your computer stores and plays the playlist, encodes the video, and sends it to YouTube. Continuous operation therefore depends on the computer, OBS, power, and a sustained internet connection, as well as the source files remaining accessible. Loop settings solve repeated playback only. Plan to monitor the stream and manually restart or reconnect after a failure unless you have a tested recovery method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can OBS loop several Sanskrit shloka files in sequence?

Yes. Add them as a VLC Video playlist in OBS, with VLC installed in the same architecture as OBS; Loop Playlist is enabled by default.

Does looping in OBS make a YouTube stream stay live indefinitely?

No. Looping repeats the media only. It does not recover a failed encoder, computer, power supply, or internet connection.

Will YouTube automatically archive a 24/7 stream in full?

Do not assume so. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; keep a local recording or separate archive if you need a durable copy.
