If OBS says it reconnected but YouTube still shows the stream as offline, check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room first. OBS reports its connection to an ingest server; YouTube’s stream-health status and incoming preview show what YouTube is receiving. Read YouTube’s exact error, then check the selected stream and key, encoder settings, and network path in that order. Reconnecting alone does not identify the cause.

1. Check what YouTube is receiving

Open YouTube Studio and select the stream in Live Control Room. Check both the stream status or health message and whether an incoming preview appears. YouTube says, “You can check your stream’s health and analytics while you’re streaming in Live Control Room.” YouTube’s stream-health guidance explains where those messages appear; its encoder setup instructions describe the incoming preview and starting a scheduled stream.

  • No preview or an offline status: YouTube may not be receiving a usable feed. Follow the specific health message and check the stream selection, server URL, key, and encoder output.
  • A preview appears, but health is poor: YouTube is receiving something, but the feed may have an ingest or configuration problem. Use the displayed error to choose what to inspect.
  • The preview looks healthy but the status does not change: Check the stream’s status and any instructions in Live Control Room before altering OBS settings. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live.

YouTube distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow warnings in its live encoder error reference. Treat the message as evidence: correct the setting it names rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.

2. Confirm OBS is sending to the intended stream

A reconnect indicator does not confirm that OBS is connected to the stream you are viewing in Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Compare the destination configured in OBS with the intended YouTube stream, and check for a stale, mistyped, or mismatched key.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the intended stream in Live Control Room and confirm it is the stream you expect to receive the encoder feed.
  2. In OBS, inspect the streaming service or custom server settings and confirm the server URL and stream key correspond to that stream. Avoid sharing the key; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream.
  3. If YouTube reports a third-party encoder start error, follow YouTube’s guidance to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder. Then reconnect and check the Live Control Room preview again.
  4. If the stream is scheduled, follow YouTube’s sequence: start the encoder, wait for the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room.

See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and troubleshooting steps for encoder errors. Regenerating a key is appropriate when the key is implicated; it is not a universal fix for an ingest or network problem.

3. Follow YouTube’s exact ingest error

YouTube checks the stream it receives. Its error reference covers problems involving video or audio format, bitrate, audio/video stream settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatched primary and backup streams. Check the error wording against the current settings for your chosen encoder and resolution, then change the setting the message identifies. The YouTube error guide includes contextual recommendations, including an audio stream bitrate of 128 Kbps in the cases described there; that value is not a diagnosis or a universal setting for every offline stream.

  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  • Verify that the encoder is producing the video and audio streams YouTube expects.
  • Compare the configured resolution, bitrate, and keyframe frequency with the requirements relevant to that stream and error.
  • If you use primary and backup streams, check that their settings match where YouTube requires them to.
  • After each targeted change, reconnect and observe Live Control Room rather than changing multiple variables together.

4. Use OBS’s status and log to separate connection from encoding problems

Check OBS’s dropped-frame information and log for the specific event. OBS distinguishes connection failures, invalid paths or URLs, inaccessible stream keys, disconnections, and encoding errors. A reconnect message by itself does not tell you which occurred or prove YouTube received a usable stream. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide states: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” Dropped frames therefore point toward a connection or bitrate-capacity issue; they do not automatically mean OBS itself is defective.

If the log identifies an encoding error, investigate the encoder and its workload rather than assuming the stream key or ISP is responsible. If OBS reports a connection, path, or key issue, follow that evidence and compare it with the YouTube status message.

5. Test the network path before replacing equipment

OBS recommends choosing a bitrate your stable upload connection can sustain. Its starting suggestion is to set bitrate to 75% of total upload speed; this is a starting point, not a guarantee or a universal YouTube bitrate requirement. Available upload capacity can fluctuate, and OBS notes that service limits also matter. See the dated OBS connection troubleshooting guidance (September 30, 2024).

  1. If OBS shows dropped frames, reduce the bitrate and check whether the connection stabilizes. Change one setting at a time and watch both OBS and YouTube.
  2. If you are on Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet where practical. OBS says, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.”
  3. Temporarily rule out VPNs, security software, network-optimization software, and outdated network drivers as sources of interference. Restore security protections after any diagnostic test.
  4. If YouTube’s troubleshooting points to outbound connectivity, test the outbound Internet connection. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube still cannot receive it, contact your ISP and describe the evidence.

OBS also names modems, routers, network cards, cables, and other devices as possible failure points. Check existing connections and ports first. Replacing equipment is a confirmation test only when the evidence points to hardware; OBS advises speaking with your ISP if you are unsure before replacing it.

6. Troubleshoot by the evidence, not by the symptom alone

What you observe Likely branch to investigate Next check
YouTube has no incoming preview or reports a key/start error Stream selection, server URL, or key Compare the OBS destination with the intended Live Control Room stream; follow YouTube’s key guidance if its error calls for a new key.
YouTube shows a format, bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or audio/video error Ingest configuration Correct the setting named in the YouTube error and verify it against current encoder requirements.
OBS reports dropped frames or connection instability Network path or bitrate beyond stable capacity Reduce bitrate, test wired Ethernet, and check for VPN, security, optimization-software, or driver interference.
OBS log indicates an encoding error Encoder Investigate the encoder error and workload; do not treat a reconnect as proof of a YouTube-side fault.
Encoder output looks healthy, but YouTube cannot receive it Outbound connectivity or ISP path Test outbound Internet connectivity and contact your ISP if the problem persists.
Evidence points to a failing cable, port, modem, router, or network card Network hardware Check existing equipment and connections; consult the ISP before replacing hardware if uncertain.

Useful evidence to collect before escalating includes YouTube’s exact health message, whether its preview appears, relevant OBS log events, dropped-frame information, the stream selection and key status, encoder settings, and network conditions. There is no single cause established by the symptom “reconnected but offline.”

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose a live OBS session, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works. This is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera-based OBS broadcasts. Start the free first day.
