If “wrong order” means one scene element is covering another, adjust the scene’s Sources list instead; that controls visual layering, not playlist playback.
First, identify which “order” is wrong
Look at the OBS scene that feeds the live output and identify the symptom before changing settings. A video sequence problem concerns which file plays next. A layering problem concerns which graphic, video, or other scene element appears in front of another in the preview.
- Videos play in an unexpected sequence: check the playlist-capable VLC Video source and its shuffle setting.
- One visual element covers another: rearrange the Sources list in that scene.
Fix the order of videos in an OBS playlist
1. Confirm that the source supports a playlist
OBS’s Media Source is for an individual media file. For multiple playlist items, use VLC Video. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear as an available source in OBS. Match the VLC installation to OBS: OBS Project says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
2. Check the playlist entries
Open the VLC Video source’s properties and inspect the playlist itself. Confirm that the intended files are present and listed in the sequence you want. A correct shuffle setting cannot compensate for entries that are missing or arranged differently from your intended sequence.

3. Turn off Shuffle Playlist for sequential playback
In the VLC Video source properties, check Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents this control as determining whether playlist files are randomized or kept in the order of the file list; its documented default is Off. For list-order playback, make sure it is off.
Fix visual stacking in an OBS scene
If the videos are playing in the right sequence but a source appears above or hides another, select the affected scene and inspect its Sources list. OBS documents that sources higher in the list appear above sources lower in the preview.

- In the scene’s Sources list, locate the source that should move in front of or behind another.
- Drag it to the desired position, or use the list’s up and down buttons.
- Check the preview to confirm the visual layering is right. This does not change the sequence of files in a VLC playlist.
If the playlist still behaves unexpectedly
After checking the source type, playlist entries, and shuffle setting, capture enough detail to distinguish a reproducible OBS issue from a configuration problem:
- OBS version and operating system
- The playlist contents and their displayed order
- The VLC Video source settings, including Shuffle Playlist
- The exact steps that reproduce the unexpected sequence, including whether it happens after changing scenes
A GitHub issue filed on October 11, 2020, reported shuffle behavior repeating across scene changes in OBS 26.0.2. That is historical context, not evidence that current OBS releases have the same bug or that it explains a particular stream. If your steps consistently reproduce the issue after the configuration checks above, include them when seeking help.
