Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse OBS’s VLC Video source to play a list of videos, and enable Loop Playlist to repeat it. This loops the media—not the entire broadcast. OBS, your computer, network connection, and YouTube ingest session must also remain healthy for a continuous stream.
Set up an OBS playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed and the bitness matches. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene where the video should appear, select Sources → + → VLC Video, give it a name, and add the files to its playlist. VLC Video is OBS’s source for playing a playlist of media items.
- Set playback order and repetition. Turn on Loop Playlist to start the list again after its last item. It is on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play files in list order; it is off by default. Turn it on only if you want randomized order.
- Choose visibility behavior deliberately. OBS’s documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes or hide the source, playback may stop and start again. Review Visibility Behaviour in the source properties and choose the behavior that suits your scene changes.
- Check audio and preview the sequence. OBS documents Audio Track 1 as the default. Confirm that the selected track and your files contain the intended audio, then preview locally. Listen for silence, gaps, and unexpected transitions, including at playlist boundaries.
The VLC Video source’s documented default for Network caching is 400 ms (OBS Project, 2022). OBS does not provide a universal recommended custom value, so avoid treating a different cache setting as a guaranteed fix.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days, and states a minimum age of 16. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and setup guidance before assuming an unavailable broadcast is an OBS problem.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream key into OBS. Enter the key in OBS’s streaming settings along with the server details provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Do not share it; reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose an ingest protocol and encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. For RTMP/RTMPS, its current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current options and recommendations.
- Set bitrate to fit your connection. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are reference settings, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your connection can carry reliably, then test with representative motion and audio.
- Test before going public. Preview the encoder feed in Live Control Room. Test the complete workflow, including a playlist boundary and a scene change, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. During the broadcast, monitor video and audio quality rather than relying on the playlist loop alone.
RTMPS or HLS?
For an ordinary looping playlist, RTMPS is the simpler default. Consider HLS only when you have a specific compatibility, HDR, or codec reason to use it. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires a particular delivery setup:
- Use TS segments with a duration of 1–4 seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST/PUT.
See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions before configuring an HLS workflow.

Why a playlist loop does not ensure an uninterrupted stream
Loop Playlist controls what the local VLC Video source does when it reaches the end of its file list. It does not restart OBS after a crash, restore a lost network connection, fix an unhealthy encoder, or guarantee that YouTube’s ingest session stays connected. Continuity depends on all of those layers, as well as the source remaining available and visible as intended.
Copyright and channel eligibility are separate from playback settings. Use media you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream settings and rules. Looping a file repeatedly does not establish permission to broadcast it.

Troubleshoot common playlist and live-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not available as a source | VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC with the same bitness as OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Playback stops or restarts after a scene change | The source may have become hidden, and its visibility behavior may stop playback when hidden. | Review Visibility Behaviour in the VLC Video source properties and test the scene transition again. |
| The list ends instead of repeating | Looping may be disabled. | Enable Loop Playlist and test through the final item. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder/ingest path may be unhealthy. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, test upload capacity, and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. Re-test with representative audio and motion. |
| The broadcast will not activate | The channel may not yet be eligible, or first-time activation may still be pending. | Check verification, live-stream restrictions, age eligibility, and activation timing in YouTube’s getting-started guidance. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else could use the credential to connect to your stream. | Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. |
