For most real estate tour playlists, OBS is the easier choice: add the ordered files to a VLC Video source, leave shuffle off, and enable Loop Playlist. Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable building and supervising a command-line workflow. Either way, a nonstop broadcast depends on more than the encoder: the computer, network, files, and YouTube ingest all need to keep working.
OBS or FFmpeg: which should you use?

These are workflow distinctions based on documented controls, not results from a comparative performance test. OBS documents that Loop Playlist restarts the source after it has run out of media files (OBS Media Sources).
Set up a real estate tour playlist in OBS
- Install OBS and VLC. The VLC Video source is available when VLC is installed. Match the application architectures: OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In your scene, add a VLC Video Source, then add the tour videos in the order you want them to play. Keep shuffle disabled if the tour sequence matters, and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents shuffle as off and playlist looping as on by default, but check the controls rather than relying on defaults.
- Set the YouTube destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its RTMPS server URL and stream key. In OBS, choose YouTube/RTMPS as the service if available, or enter the RTMPS server URL and key in the stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Check the program output. Preview the ordered playback, confirm the intended video and audio, and check YouTube’s stream health feedback after connecting. Resolve any reported configuration issue before relying on the broadcast.
- Test and plan for failures. Run a private or unlisted test, or use a scheduled test setup appropriate to your channel. Decide who will respond if OBS stops, the computer loses power, the network drops, a file becomes unavailable, or YouTube reports an ingest issue. OBS looping does not restart a crashed encoder or restore a broken connection.
Set up the playlist with FFmpeg
- Prepare the input arrangement. Decide how your files will be presented to FFmpeg as inputs. FFmpeg’s
-stream_loop -1input option means to loop an input infinitely; place it before the relevant-iinput. That option alone is not a complete multi-file playlist recipe and does not guarantee seamless transitions between tour videos. - Match input timing to live output. FFmpeg documents
-reas reading at the input’s native frame rate. It can be useful when timing matters, such as live streaming, but it does not resolve codec, frame-rate, audio, or YouTube configuration mismatches. - Configure the output for the current stream. Use the RTMPS ingestion address and stream name/key shown for your YouTube stream. Confirm the output container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and other encoder settings against YouTube’s current requirements and the stream’s health feedback. The exact command depends on your files and chosen output settings; do not treat a generic command as production-ready.
- Supervise the process. If the stream is unattended, configure a process supervisor or a clear restart procedure, and monitor the host, connection, and YouTube ingest. A running command alone cannot guarantee continuous delivery.
Use RTMPS and diagnose YouTube ingest health
RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL/TLS connection. YouTube’s guide specifies port 443; use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP address is the right one. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes primary and backup ingestion addresses and a health-status field that can report configuration issues. Check that feedback if YouTube reports problems such as unsupported audio, bitrate mismatch, or frame-rate mismatch; adjust the encoder to the applicable current requirements rather than guessing. What “nonstop” requires beyond looping
- Host: The computer or server running OBS or FFmpeg must remain powered and operational.
- Connection: The host needs a working internet connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Media: Playlist files and any referenced paths must remain available and readable.
- Recovery: Plan for both encoder-process failures and network or ingest interruptions. Restarting the encoder may not fix a problem elsewhere in the chain.
- Content rights and channel policies: Use tour footage and audio you are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies. A looping technical setup does not establish that content complies with copyright rules or reused-content policies.
Neither OBS nor FFmpeg documentation promises uninterrupted delivery for an individual setup. The exact reliability of a broadcast depends on its host, network, media, configuration, and recovery arrangements.
