Short answer: Use OBS on a local computer if it can stay powered, connected, and monitored; choose a VPS when remote, unattended operation matters and you have verified that the instance can encode your stream and sustain its outbound bandwidth. A VPS is not a replacement for encoder software: it is a remote computer on which you can run OBS or another encoder. What OBS and a VPS each do
OBS Studio is software that captures, mixes, and encodes audio and video for a live stream. A VPS (virtual private server) is a rented remote computer. It can host OBS or another encoder, but you still need to configure that software, connect it to YouTube, and maintain the server.
For a podcast assembled from prerecorded audio and video, either setup can send a continuous feed to YouTube. The choice is mainly about where the encoder runs and which failures you can manage—not an India-specific YouTube setting. The available platform guidance does not require an India-based VPS or prescribe special encoder settings for India.

Local OBS is often the simpler starting point when suitable hardware and a stable connection are already available. A VPS may be more convenient for remote operation, but do not assume a low-cost CPU-only instance can handle every OBS scene or output profile. OBS notes that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. Ask the provider about the exact instance or test it before putting a production stream on it.

Set up YouTube and the encoder
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
2. Prepare and preview the stream
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. For an always-on channel, use the same principle before launch: configure in advance, start the encoder, and verify the preview in Live Control Room before treating the broadcast as live. Check that viewers can find the event on the channel and watch page, including on mobile.
3. Choose output settings that match the connection
Use a supported codec and keep the output bitrate within what the connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stability; the right setting also depends on frame rate, codec, content, and network route. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, with output up to 60 fps.

- Bitrate: Test the upload connection at the location or VPS where the encoder will run. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and other users or services on a shared connection reduce the capacity available to the stream.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS when supported; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers.
- Backup encoders: If you configure a primary and backup stream, account for the primary bitrate, backup bitrate, and recommended upload headroom together.
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. A speed test is a useful check, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted connection over the duration of a 24/7 broadcast.
4. Use HLS only when its requirements fit
YouTube also supports HLS for certain codec and HDR use cases. Its documented HLS setup uses HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, and rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments. Because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, it has higher latency. It is a specific ingestion option, not a general fix for outages.
Keep a 24/7 stream observable and recoverable
YouTube recommends checking encoder failover, preview, audio, and video. For continuous operation, turn those launch checks into a routine: monitor stream health and audio, set up alerts where available, document how to restart the encoder, and periodically confirm the stream is still visible to viewers. These are practical operating steps, not a YouTube-mandated monitoring specification.

The failure points differ by location. With local OBS, plan for power cuts, ISP or router interruptions, machine restarts, heat, and software faults. With a VPS, check the provider’s compute limits, egress terms, network route, remote access, and restart controls. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted uptime; build a recovery plan around the risks you can actually observe and address.

Do not assume a complete 24-hour replay
YouTube’s encoder help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not promise that a single broadcast lasting 24 hours or more will produce one complete replay: the documented threshold does not establish how every longer stream will be handled. If a full replay matters, test the current Live Control Room behavior and arrange a backup recording or a segmented schedule before launch.
Clear rights for live and archived use
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content and to comply with applicable laws and territory requirements. Check rights for podcast music, clips, recordings, and guest contributions for the actual uses you plan. The platform terms do not determine which Indian registrations or licences apply to a particular show or business; get appropriate local advice for that question.

Do not budget on assumed live-stream earnings
For channels eligible to monetize, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Its live monetization guidance cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A continuous broadcast does not itself guarantee earnings or monetization eligibility.

The core encoder recommendations above are not India-specific. For a local OBS setup, evaluate the upload stability and power continuity at the actual premises.
