What a YouTube radio stream needs
Audio plus a video signal
YouTube’s encoder workflow is for a video stream. For radio, combine the audio with a static branded image or looped visual rather than expecting an audio-only encoder feed to meet that workflow. A still visual may be enough for an audio-led station; the appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the output you actually produce and the upload connection that must carry it.
A YouTube live stream and encoder connection
Enable live streaming on your channel, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, then connect your encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you plan to launch. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and replace it if it is exposed.

Rights and archive expectations
Make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every recording, song and visual in the playlist. A continuous station does not make copyrighted material safe to stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a 24/7 stream is longer, so do not count on it being preserved as one automatically archived video under that guidance. Save or separately publish recordings you need to retain.
Set up a 24/7 station with OBS
These steps assume you have prerecorded radio audio and a static image or looping visual. OBS sends directly to YouTube, not through OBS-operated relay servers, so the computer and its network connection must remain available for the broadcast to continue.

- Enable and prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if needed and allow for the possibility that initial activation takes up to 24 hours. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and key.
- Prepare the radio output. In OBS, add the audio source or sources and a static image or looped visual. Confirm the audio plays and the video canvas shows the image or motion you intend viewers to see.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the server and stream key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private.
- Set the video output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard streaming. In OBS’s output and video settings, choose a codec and resolution your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends no more than 4 seconds. YouTube’s current settings support H.264, H.265 and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30; these are platform recommendations, not requirements for every static-image radio stream.
- Choose audio settings and test. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio. Test a representative section of the actual music and visual, then check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup continuously. A higher video resolution does not improve the radio audio itself, and its bitrate still needs dependable upload capacity.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the live output in YouTube Studio. For continuous operation, plan how you will detect and recover from a stopped OBS process, a computer restart, power loss, network failure or a YouTube-side interruption. A restart loop or process monitor can help with some local failures, but restarting software cannot resolve every platform-side interruption.
When a technical ingest workflow is appropriate
YouTube also supports HLS ingest, but it is not the simplest route for a typical OBS setup. Google’s documented requirements include muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and media playlists and segments sent over HTTPS. Use this route only if your encoder or workflow is designed for those requirements.
What to expect from a cloud service
With cloud playout, you upload or configure the content with the provider and connect the service to YouTube. Your computer does not need to stay on for that cloud playback. Check that the chosen service supports the playlist or scheduling workflow you need, what the plan allows, and what recovery behavior it provides. A service’s use of “24/7” or “continuous” describes its offering; it is not independent proof of uninterrupted uptime.

Among the specific options described in current sources, YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 video, Upstream describes uploaded-video playback and scheduled prerecorded streams, and AWS Elemental MediaLive offers configurable broadcast processing. The sources do not establish a reliable head-to-head comparison of Gyre and Upstream for radio playlists, rights handling, uptime or support, so choose based on the actual features and terms each service publishes.

Troubleshoot interruptions and poor stream health
- Dropped frames in OBS: OBS identifies rising dropped frames as a sign of connection instability or a bitrate beyond the connection’s capacity. Check whether the upload connection is stable and reduce bitrate or output demands if needed; test again with the representative stream.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm OBS is using the correct YouTube stream URL and current key, and that the stream is enabled in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- Audio is present but viewers see no usable picture: Verify the OBS canvas includes the static image or looped visual and that the encoder is sending video as well as audio.
- The stream stops after a local restart or outage: Check that the computer has restarted, OBS is running, the network is back and the encoder has reconnected. Process automation can restart OBS but cannot guarantee recovery from a YouTube-side event.
- A cloud stream drops: Check the provider’s status and recovery instructions, then verify the YouTube stream state and connection. Automatic recovery behavior varies by product; do not assume it without confirming the selected service’s stated feature.
- Broadcast settings appear unstable: Check YouTube stream health while sending a representative test. Use an appropriate resolution and bitrate for the visual, encoder and available upload capacity rather than assuming one high bitrate suits every radio station.
