For a playlist of local music files in OBS, use VLC Video: it supports multiple items, playlist looping and optional shuffle. OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler when you need to repeat one file. Neither setting ensures that a computer-powered broadcast stays live around the clock; they control playback, not power, internet, encoder or YouTube availability.
OBS Media Source vs VLC Video at a glance
| Need | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local file | Designed for an individual media file; supports the formats listed in OBS documentation. | Can play media, but its distinctive advantage here is a playlist. |
| Play multiple local files as a source playlist | Not the playlist source documented by OBS. | Add multiple media items and set their order. |
| Repeat playback | Enable the source’s loop setting for one file. | “Loop Playlist” restarts playback after the playlist ends; OBS documents it as on by default. |
| Randomize playback | No playlist shuffle control is documented for this source. | “Shuffle Playlist” randomizes files; OBS documents it as off by default. |
| Additional software | Built into OBS. | Requires VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| When the source is hidden | Not the main distinction in this comparison. | Visibility behavior can be configured; OBS documents stopping while hidden and restarting when visible as the default. |
These capabilities and defaults are described in the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. OBS lists Media Source video formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm, and audio formats including .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav.
Choose the source that fits your music schedule
Use Media Source for a single recording
If the stream is one long recording, add it as a Media Source and enable its loop setting. This is the straightforward choice when you do not need OBS to move through a queue of separate local files.
Use VLC Video for a playlist of local files in OBS
For several tracks or recordings managed in one source, install VLC and add a VLC Video source. Add the media items in the intended sequence, keep “Shuffle Playlist” off for a fixed order, and leave “Loop Playlist” on if playback should begin again at the end. Turn shuffle on only when a randomized order is wanted.

Know what a source playlist is—and is not
This setup is a playlist of media items available to OBS, typically local files. The OBS source guidance does not establish a workflow for feeding a YouTube-hosted playlist URL into the source. It is also separate from any playlist feature on YouTube itself.

Set VLC visibility behavior deliberately
OBS’s VLC Video source has a setting for what happens when the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop playback while hidden and restart when visible. A source in a scene that is not currently shown can therefore stop and restart rather than continue playing in the background.
In the VLC Video source properties, inspect the visibility behavior and choose the option that fits how your scenes work: stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing while hidden. Confirm the source remains audible and behaves as expected when switching scenes before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. OBS describes these source controls in its Media Sources documentation.

What “24/7” does—and does not—mean with OBS
Looping a file or playlist means the source can repeat its media. It does not guarantee a continuous live broadcast. A local OBS setup still depends on the computer remaining powered and stable, internet service, encoder operation, and YouTube accepting and maintaining the stream. The OBS documentation describes playback settings; it does not make an uptime promise.
For an adjacent network-input case, OBS also documents receiving an SRT feed through Media Source or VLC Video, with different setup steps and limitations. That is not the same as building a local music-file playlist; see the OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide, dated January 14, 2022.

Clear the rights and YouTube checks before going live
A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its music. Confirm that your permissions cover the specific recordings, the live-broadcast use, and the territories relevant to your channel. Buying a track or holding a license does not by itself ensure that YouTube’s live checks will let the stream continue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is identified, YouTube says it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. For licensed third-party content, YouTube instructs creators to ask the rights owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting even when the creator has a license. Read YouTube Help’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm the rights holder’s process for the exact material. The guidance does not determine which Indian copyright or licensing rules apply to a particular recording, rights holder or territory.

Common problems and practical fixes
- You cannot find VLC Video or the source does not load: install VLC and confirm it is 64-bit if OBS is 64-bit, as recommended in OBS’s source documentation.
- The playlist stops when you switch scenes: inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default stops while hidden and restarts when visible; select pause/resume or keep-playing behavior if that better suits the scene layout.
- The playlist ends instead of starting over: check that “Loop Playlist” is enabled in the VLC Video source properties.
- Tracks play in an unexpected order: disable “Shuffle Playlist” for a fixed sequence, then review the order of the media items.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream or shows a placeholder: treat this as a possible rights or Content ID issue, not a playlist-loop problem. Check YouTube’s notice, verify broadcast rights, and contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting.
- Playback continues locally but the broadcast drops: source looping does not diagnose stream transport, computer, encoder, internet or platform problems. Check those parts of the setup separately; the source controls alone cannot guarantee continuous transmission.
