Use OBS Media Source to repeat one podcast episode; use VLC Video to repeat a playlist of episodes. Media Source has a per-file Loop option, while VLC Video supports playlists and a Loop Playlist option. VLC Video requires VLC installed, with 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. These choices control playback in OBS; YouTube transmission still needs its stream URL and key, and should be tested separately.

Which OBS source should you choose?

Need Choose Why
Repeat one local episode Media Source Its Loop control repeats a file when playback completes; the documented default is off.
Play several episodes in sequence and repeat them VLC Video It supports a playlist and Loop Playlist; the documented default is on.

If you only need one file, VLC adds an installation dependency without a playlist benefit. If you want an episode sequence, VLC Video is the documented playlist option. Neither source choice by itself connects OBS to YouTube or guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.

How Media Source and VLC Video differ

Media Source: one file on repeat

OBS Media Source handles local audio and video files and provides a Loop setting. OBS lists supported file types including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. File support does not guarantee every file will play correctly in every OBS version or operating system, so test the actual episode file in the setup you plan to use. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

The Media Sources documentation also describes restart-on-activation and close-when-inactive controls. Consider how these fit your scene changes: a source that restarts when activated may begin the episode again after you return to its scene.

VLC Video: a playlist, with VLC installed

OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can play a playlist of media items, including videos. You must install VLC separately. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Its Loop Playlist option restarts playback after the playlist ends, and is documented as on by default. Consult the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Sources Guide for the source controls.

VLC Video also has a visibility behavior setting: playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. This refers to whether the source is visible in the OBS scene—not whether the OBS application window is visible. Test scene changes to ensure that the selected behavior suits your show.

VLC for Fire

  • VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
  • VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.

Set up a repeating episode or playlist in OBS

  1. Choose the playback source. In the intended OBS scene, add a Media Source for one episode, or a VLC Video source for a sequence of episodes. Use the source’s properties to select the local file or populate the playlist.
  2. Set the loop behavior. For Media Source, turn on Loop. For VLC Video, enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to return to the first item after the last. Do not assume a default suits your scene workflow; confirm the setting.
  3. Match VLC and OBS architectures if using VLC Video. Install VLC, and pair 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Reopen or configure the source after installation and verify that its media appears and plays.
  4. Choose what happens when the source is hidden. In VLC Video’s visibility behavior, select continue, pause, or stop according to what should happen when another scene is active. Switch scenes during a rehearsal and observe the result. Check Media Source’s activation and inactive-source options as well if using that source.
  5. Test the file and the loop locally. Play the episode through its end, check that it restarts or advances as intended, and listen for silence, abrupt transitions, or unexpected restarts. Repeat the test with the scenes and audio mix you will use live.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and verify the stream

  1. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast, then configure OBS’s streaming connection with those values. Keep the key private; it authorizes an encoder connection to your channel.
  2. Set encoder options for the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use its settings table for your chosen codec and resolution rather than copying an unrelated preset.
  3. Start a private or unlisted rehearsal and send representative episode audio and video. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test, and verify that OBS audio reaches the stream and the episode repeats as expected. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection workflow.
  4. Only make playlist edits during a public live broadcast after rehearsing that exact workflow. OBS documentation describes playlist playback, but does not establish whether changing a VLC playlist during an active broadcast always preserves uninterrupted playback.

Looping, archives, copyright, and monetization

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not guarantee an archive for a longer stream. Plan to retain an independent copy if you need a recording beyond that threshold. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

Looping is a playback function, not a monetization decision. YouTube’s policy, updated July 15, 2025, clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced content is covered by its inauthentic content policy. Monetized material should have materially varied substance and provide creative, educational, or other viewer value. This is a monetization consideration, not a documented technical ban on using OBS’s loop control. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and make sure you have the necessary rights to every episode’s audio and video; the playback settings cannot establish those rights.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • VLC Video source is unavailable or will not load media: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Then reopen the source properties and test a supported local file.
  • The episode plays once and stops: check that Media Source’s Loop is on, or that VLC Video’s Loop Playlist is on and the playlist contains the intended items.
  • Playback stops or restarts when changing scenes: review the source’s hidden/activation behavior. VLC Video’s visibility setting applies when the source is not visible in the current scene; test the chosen continue, pause, or stop behavior.
  • OBS plays correctly but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream: troubleshoot the encoder connection separately from the source. Check the YouTube stream URL and key, encoder settings for the selected codec and resolution, and YouTube’s live health messages. Test with representative audio and video.
  • A live playlist edit causes an unexpected interruption: uninterrupted editing behavior is not established by the source documentation. Rehearse changes on a private or unlisted stream and avoid relying on an untested live edit.
