Use Media Source to repeat one video file in OBS: add the source and turn on Loop. Use VLC Video for a playlist: add the files, enable Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off if order matters. VLC must be installed, with its architecture matching OBS. These settings control playback inside OBS; YouTube’s encoder connection and go-live controls are separate.

Which OBS source should you choose?

Your need Choose Why and what to check
Repeat a single local video Media Source It has a per-file Loop property and does not require VLC. OBS lists support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Play several files as a repeating playlist VLC Video It is the playlist-oriented option. Add the files, enable Loop Playlist, and turn off Shuffle Playlist to preserve the sequence. VLC is required, and its architecture should match OBS.
Change playback when a source is hidden by a scene switch Either Media Source offers Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive. VLC Video has visibility behavior options for stopping and restarting, pausing and resuming, or continuing to play while hidden. Confirm the behavior in your installed OBS version.

The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022) lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. It lists Media Source Loop as off by default and VLC Video Loop Playlist as on by default. Defaults and labels can vary by OBS version, so inspect the property in your own setup before going live. The upstream VLC source implementation sets loop true and shuffle false by default.

How to loop one video with Media Source

  1. Add the source: In the OBS scene where the video should appear, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  2. Select the file: In the source properties, choose the local video file. OBS documents a range of video and audio formats; if a file does not play, try a supported format such as MP4 and verify that the file itself plays correctly outside OBS.
  3. Enable repeat: Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. The documented default is off, so do not assume a new source will repeat without checking.
  4. Choose hidden-source behavior: If switching scenes, decide whether to enable Restart playback when source becomes active or Close file when inactive. These affect local source playback, not YouTube’s stream state.
  5. Check the scene: Confirm that the source is visible, sized and positioned correctly, and that its audio is at the intended level. Watch it pass the end of the file to verify the loop in practice.

How to loop a playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install the matching VLC build: Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; match the architecture used by your OBS installation.
  2. Add the source: In the target scene’s Sources panel, add VLC Video. If that option is missing, first check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Build the playlist: Add the media files in the order you want them played. Confirm the file paths are valid and that each item plays.
  4. Set repeat and order: Enable Loop Playlist. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if the files must play in the listed order. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but verify the actual property state in your version.
  5. Set visibility behavior: Choose whether playback should stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing while the source is hidden. Test by switching away from and back to the scene.
  6. Check network media settings if relevant: OBS lists Network caching at 400 ms by default for VLC Video. That is a configuration default documented on the OBS page dated 2022, not a performance guarantee; adjust only when your media source and symptoms warrant it.

Keep OBS playback separate from YouTube Live

A Media Source or VLC Video source determines what OBS plays into a scene. It does not start or stop a YouTube broadcast, make a scheduled event public, or set the encoder connection. OBS scenes combine sources into the output; source visibility controls what happens to a source when hidden. See the OBS Sources Guide.

  1. Connect OBS as the encoder: In YouTube’s live setup, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder settings in OBS. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Check the preview: For a scheduled event, wait for the Live Control Room preview and verify that the video and audio are arriving as expected.
  3. Go live when ready: Select Go live in the Live Control Room when the event should become public. Editing or switching an OBS source is not a substitute for this YouTube control, and the documentation does not promise that source edits preserve a live session or synchronize with the scheduled transition.
  4. Monitor stream health: Test moving video and audio before the event, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube’s live stream settings help covers event controls.

Encoder settings still affect the broadcast

Choosing a source does not choose the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. YouTube provides resolution-, frame-rate-, and codec-specific recommendations in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Choose settings your connection can sustain, test the actual output, and monitor stream health; platform recommendations are not a guarantee that a particular OBS source or computer will run continuously.

Common problems and fixes

  • The video stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. The documented Media Source default is off.
  • The playlist order changes: Disable Shuffle Playlist, then verify the listed file order.
  • VLC Video is unavailable in Sources: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. The OBS documentation specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The video restarts or pauses after switching scenes: Inspect the source’s visibility behavior. Media Source’s restart/close properties and VLC Video’s stop/restart, pause/resume, or always-play behavior determine playback when hidden.
  • The source looks correct in OBS but the YouTube event is not live: Check the encoder connection and stream key, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and use YouTube’s Go live control for a scheduled event.
  • The preview has choppy video or poor stream health: Check connection reliability and encoder resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance; test movement and audio before the event.

For an always-on YouTube channel

OBS Media Source and VLC Video are playback choices inside a locally running OBS setup. Their documentation does not establish that either source guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation or prevents stream resets during source changes. For a cloud alternative, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer, OBS, or home connection running.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
