There is no single verified OBS setting that fixes every gaming VOD that appears to end early on YouTube. First find where the cutoff occurs: play the original file outside OBS, check OBS’s preview, inspect a local recording or controlled stream, then compare the viewer-side output and the processed YouTube VOD. The right next step depends on whether you use Media Source or VLC Video, and whether video, audio, or only the final YouTube VOD is affected.
Identify what “ends early” means
Before changing settings, distinguish the symptom. A video that stops before its expected end is different from audio that cuts out while the picture continues, a frozen final frame, a source that fails to restart, or a YouTube VOD that differs from OBS’s preview. Note the expected and observed end times and where you see the problem.
Also identify the source type in the affected scene. OBS’s standard Media Source and VLC Video are separate source types with different controls and dependencies. In OBS, select the source in the scene and open its properties to confirm which one it is and what file or playlist it uses. OBS documents the distinctions in Media Sources.

- Play the exact file used by the source in a standalone media player.
- Check its reported duration and watch the last several seconds. Confirm that the file itself contains the content you expect.
- Compare the ending you see outside OBS with the ending in OBS. If the file itself ends early, a scene setting cannot restore missing content; investigate the file or choose a complete copy.
This check separates an input-file problem from playback or output behavior. Do not infer that the file is damaged unless the comparison shows that it is the point of failure.

Check the settings for the source you actually use
Standard Media Source: one local file
Open the Media Source properties and verify the selected local file. The three playback options below do different jobs:
- Loop repeats a completed file. Enable it when the intended behavior is to start the file again after it finishes. It does not repair an unexpectedly short source file.
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts playback when the source becomes visible. This is not the same as looping a file that is already playing.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears after playback completes. It changes the post-playback display, not the media’s duration or the point at which its content ends.

VLC Video: playlist or extended media support
VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can handle playlists. OBS requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Check the playlist entries and the Loop Playlist option if your intended behavior is to repeat a playlist. Do not apply a VLC playlist option to a standard Media Source.
To isolate a source-specific issue, try the same local file in standard Media Source and compare the result. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that Media Source is universally more reliable.

Locate the cutoff across the OBS-to-YouTube path
- Compare the standalone file and OBS preview. If the file plays fully outside OBS but not in preview, focus on source type, source properties, and playback behavior.
- Make a short local recording or controlled stream test. Compare its ending with the preview. This helps determine whether the discrepancy appears in OBS’s output path rather than source playback alone.
- Check what viewers receive. Compare the outgoing stream with the OBS preview, then inspect the finished YouTube VOD once it is available. A processed VOD can differ from what you saw in the preview, so do not assume the preview proves the VOD is intact.
OBS Studio issue #11984, “VLC source cuts off the last part of output only (not in monitoring)”, documents a report of an output-versus-monitoring difference. It is a reason to compare those observation points, not proof that the same cause or fix applies to every cutoff.
What community workarounds do—and do not—show
An OBS forum report about local audio files describes skipping near the beginning and ending short in OBS; a later participant said using standard Media Source instead of VLC Video worked in their case. That is an individual report, not an official fix or controlled test.

A separate OBS forum discussion of recorded videos describes audio muting in the final one or two seconds of clips. A participant reported that saving to MKV and remuxing to MP4 resolved their case. That anecdote concerns audio at the tail of clips; it does not establish a remedy for a video that ends early in a YouTube VOD. Treat both reports as clues to test against your own symptom, not as universal instructions.

If the comparisons do not isolate the problem, collect details before asking for a specific fix. Include:

- OBS version and operating system;
- source type (Media Source or VLC Video), and whether it points to a single local file, playlist, or URL;
- the file’s format and expected duration, plus VLC version if relevant;
- whether video, audio, both, or only the final frame is affected;
- the expected and observed cutoff times, and whether it occurs in the standalone player, preview, local recording, outgoing stream, or YouTube VOD; and
- an OBS log from a reproduction of the problem.
The OBS source type, version, operating system, media details, and observation point are not specified by the symptom alone. Without them, a root cause cannot be selected reliably.
