Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf an OBS video plays once and stops, open the source’s Properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist in a VLC Video source, use Loop Playlist instead. If you also want a clip to start from the beginning whenever its scene becomes active, enable Restart playback when source becomes active—that setting does not replace looping.
Set the repeat option for the source you are using
OBS has separate repeat controls for a single-file Media Source and a VLC Video playlist. Use the one that matches the source in your scene.
| Source | What it plays | Repeat setting |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video file | Loop |
| VLC Video | A list of media files | Loop Playlist |
To locate these options, select the source in the scene’s Sources list, right-click it, choose Properties, and enable the matching repeat option. OBS describes Loop as replaying a file after it completes; Loop Playlist restarts a VLC Video source after it runs out of media files. The official OBS Media Sources guide also lists supported local formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
Looping versus restarting when a scene activates
Loop keeps a single file repeating while its Media Source remains active. Restart playback when source becomes active controls a different event: the source becoming visible or active in the current scene. Turn on both if you want the video to start from the beginning when the scene activates and then continue repeating. Restart-on-activation alone does not make a clip loop continuously.

Check why playback still stops
- Confirm the source type. A single local clip should use Media Source and its Loop checkbox. A multi-file list in VLC Video needs Loop Playlist. These controls are not interchangeable.
- Check the source actually used in the scene. If the video ends instead of repeating, select that source and verify its corresponding loop setting in Properties; another source or scene may contain a separate copy of the clip.
- Review inactive-source behavior. OBS documents that Close file when inactive unloads the file when the source is hidden or not on the current scene. If a source only fails after being inactive, check whether this option is enabled and test the playback behavior with it disabled.
- Isolate rapid automation. If a script or controller hides and shows the source at the exact moment playback ends, test with a pause before toggling it. A 2024 OBS issue report describes a narrow hide/show-at-end case; it is not evidence of a general problem with ordinary scene changes.
A historical OBS issue report also described a looping source configured with restart-on-activation and close-file-when-inactive that failed after being inactive; reselecting the file was reported as a workaround. That report concerned older OBS versions, so it should not be treated as proof of a current general bug. If the settings above do not explain the problem, note your OBS version, source type, the states of the loop, restart, and close-file options, and whether automation controls the source.
