To investigate a failed 24/7 YouTube stream, analyze the OBS log from the session in which the failure happened, then compare its timeline with OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. A log from a different session cannot explain the incident, and without the affected log and matching platform evidence, the specific cause remains unknown.
1. Get the log from the affected OBS session
- In OBS, open Help → Log Files → Upload Last Log File if the failed session has ended. If the affected session is still open, choose Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File.
- Use the log URL with the official OBS Log Analyzer. OBS says the problem must have occurred during the session represented by the log; a log that does not cover the failure is not useful for diagnosing it. The analyzer identifies common issues and suggestions, but its flags are leads to verify—not proof of a root cause.
- Keep the log URL and note the approximate failure time, what viewers saw, any OBS Statistics counters, and the corresponding YouTube stream-health message. These let you compare clues against the same incident.
2. Match the symptoms to the right evidence
Do not treat every kind of lag or interruption as a network problem. Compare where the failure appeared, which OBS counter or warning changed, and what YouTube reported.

OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns dropped frames; it does not rule out crashes, encoder overload, or other failures.

In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream health at the time of the incident and compare the configured encoder settings with YouTube’s live encoder settings. The guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not use one bitrate as a universal target.

For one specific configuration, YouTube Help lists 1080p at 60 fps with H.264: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. This is a YouTube settings recommendation for that configuration, not a diagnosis of a failed stream or a universal 24/7 bitrate.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload headroom: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube says the primary stream, backup stream, and that margin should fit within available upload bandwidth.

4. Test one evidence-based change at a time
- Choose the branch supported by the log, OBS counters, and YouTube health message. Avoid changing network, encoder, and key settings all at once; doing so obscures which change mattered.
- If the evidence points to connection instability, try a different ingest server or lower the video bitrate to a level the stable upload connection can sustain, while preserving YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- If the evidence instead points to rendering or encoding, investigate that local path rather than applying a network fix.
- Reproduce the affected workload and compare the new OBS log and counters, YouTube stream health, viewer playback, and archive status with the original incident.
YouTube advises testing the stream and monitoring stream health during the event: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
5. Common diagnostic mistakes
- Using the wrong session log: If the failure is absent from the session represented by the log, upload the log for the affected session instead.
- Calling dropped frames proof that OBS caused the incident: OBS defines them as a connection/bitrate clue. Check upload stability, ingest selection, VPN, and security software before assigning a cause.
- Treating all lag as network loss: Compare dropped-frame counts with rendering and encoding indicators; these point to different diagnostic paths.
- Using a bitrate figure without matching the stream format: Check YouTube guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and retain upload headroom.
- Assuming a healthy OBS output means viewers received healthy playback: Check YouTube playback and the local archive alongside OBS output.
- Naming a root cause before checking incident evidence: No specific cause can be established without the affected-session log and corresponding OBS and YouTube evidence.
