Check View → Stats in OBS Studio before changing settings. If Dropped Frames (Network) is rising, troubleshoot delivery from your computer to YouTube. If rendering-lag frames are rising or OBS reports encoding overload, reduce the work your computer is doing. The symptoms can look similar, but the fixes are different.

How to tell which kind of dropped frames you have

  1. In OBS Studio, open View → Stats while streaming.
  2. Watch Dropped Frames (Network) and the indicators for frames missed due to rendering lag. Note whether either counter increases; also note any encoding-overloaded warning.
  3. Make changes only to the path indicated by the rising counter or warning, then watch Stats again to see whether that signal improves.

Network drops mean OBS cannot reliably deliver the configured bitrate to the remote server. Rendering lag and encoding overload point to local processing: OBS must composite and render the scene, then encode the output. A viewer reporting buffering does not by itself prove that OBS is dropping frames; viewer-side buffering can occur even when OBS reports no drops.

OBS signal Likely bottleneck First troubleshooting target
Dropped Frames (Network) rises Connection between your computer and YouTube ingest, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Stable upload capacity, wired networking, competing traffic, and VPN or network software
Frames missed due to rendering lag rise Local scene rendering, often involving GPU workload or complex sources Game load, scene complexity, filters, browser sources, resolution, or frame rate
OBS reports encoding overload Local encoding workload Output resolution and frame rate, plus competing system workload

These signals help locate the problem, but they do not establish its exact cause on their own. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide describes network drops as a connection that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate, and notes that such problems are typically outside OBS Studio’s control. OBS’s performance guide covers rendering and encoding workload.

If Dropped Frames (Network) is rising

Check bitrate against stable upload capacity

Compare your configured video bitrate with upload capacity that remains available during the stream—not the internet plan’s advertised download speed. OBS’s connection guide, published September 30, 2024, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate troubleshooting. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: other uploads, connection variation, and the route to YouTube can reduce usable capacity.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also check YouTube’s recommendation for your chosen codec and output. At 1080p60, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are codec-specific recommendations, not proof that your connection or route can sustain those rates. YouTube’s live encoder settings page does not state a publication year; these figures were accessed October 3, 2026.

Stabilize the connection path

  • Try Ethernet if you use Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you suspect a damaged cable, a replacement such as Cat 6 is only relevant to that physical link; it cannot fix encoding overload, ISP congestion, or a YouTube ingest issue.
  • Pause other uploads. Ask whether another person or device on the connection is uploading or using bandwidth needed by the stream.
  • Check VPNs and network software. OBS lists VPNs and bundled network-prioritizing software among possible contributors. Temporarily test without them where safe and practical.
  • Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. This can lower network drops, but it also reduces video quality. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can adjust bitrate during connection trouble; its guide labels the option beta and cautions that it does not solve the underlying cause.
  • Contact your ISP if the issue persists. Routing changes or congestion may be outside your home network; changing providers or hardware is not a guaranteed fix.

If rendering lag or encoding overload is present

Reduce local workload before assuming you need new hardware. After each change, watch the relevant Stats indicator again so you can tell which adjustment helped.

  1. Cap an uncapped game’s frame rate. If you stream a game, an uncapped frame rate can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to render its scene.
  2. Lower demanding game graphics. Reduce settings that keep the GPU heavily loaded while OBS is active.
  3. Simplify the OBS scene. Temporarily disable demanding filters, browser sources, and other complex sources to identify whether they are contributing.
  4. Lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. Both rendering and encoding workload are affected by the output you ask OBS to produce; test a lower setting and check whether the local warning or counter improves.

Lowering network bitrate is not the first fix for a rendering or encoding problem: it addresses delivery, while the bottleneck in this case is local processing.

Check YouTube’s stream configuration and health

YouTube recommends matching stream quality to internet capacity, testing before going live with audio and motion similar to the planned event, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency. Follow the codec-specific bitrate recommendation for your resolution and frame rate, but do not treat a mismatch as proof of why OBS’s network counter is rising.

If OBS shows no relevant drops but viewers report buffering, compare OBS Stats with YouTube’s stream-health information rather than assuming an encoding failure. The problem may be on the viewer side or elsewhere in delivery; the available indicators do not identify every possible cause.

Common problems and what to try

What you see What it suggests Next step
Network drops rise despite a favorable speed test A speed test does not establish that the live route is stable throughout the broadcast. Test wired Ethernet, pause competing uploads, check VPN or network software, and compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity.
Lowering bitrate helps, but quality suffers The connection may not sustain the former bitrate, though the cause may remain unresolved. Keep a sustainable setting while investigating Wi-Fi, competing traffic, network equipment, or ISP routing.
Network counter stays flat but rendering lag rises The issue points to local rendering, not the delivery counter. Cap game frame rate, lower graphics, simplify scenes, or reduce output resolution or frame rate.
Viewers buffer, but OBS reports no drops Viewer buffering alone does not establish an OBS network or encoding problem. Check YouTube stream health and compare it with OBS Stats; do not diagnose from viewer reports alone.
Network drops continue after home-network checks Routing, congestion, or another issue outside your control remains possible. Contact your ISP and share when the issue occurs; a provider or hardware change is not assured to fix it.
