Short answer: OBS’s Fade transition fades between scenes; OBS’s documented VLC Video playlist controls do not establish a setting for fading audio between consecutive videos inside one playlist. For an ordered sequence, use a VLC Video source, leave Shuffle Playlist off, and verify the program audio with a recording or private test stream before going live.
Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s official Media Sources guide says the VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the local media files you want played.
- Choose playback order and repeat behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play videos in the listed order. Enable or disable Loop Playlist depending on whether playback should restart after the final item.
- Check visibility behavior. The VLC source settings include behavior for when the source is hidden. The documented default is to stop playback while not visible and restart when visible. If scenes hide and reveal the source, account for that behavior in your sequence.
- Review other source settings as needed. The VLC source also has options including network caching and audio-track selection. These do not establish an audio crossfade between playlist items.
Scene Fade is not a playlist-item audio fade
OBS documents Fade and Cut as scene transitions, with a configurable transition duration in its OBS Overview Guide. That is a transition between scenes. The documentation does not say that choosing Fade applies an audio fade at every boundary between videos in one VLC playlist.
Keep the two cases separate:
- Changing scenes: a scene transition such as Fade controls the transition between scenes.
- Advancing within one VLC playlist: the playlist advances from one media item to the next; the reviewed VLC source documentation does not establish a configurable per-item audio crossfade.
OBS’s Filters Guide lists audio filters such as Gain, Compressor, Expander, Limiter, Noise Gate, Noise Suppression, and VST 2.x. It does not identify a built-in control for crossfading audio at each playlist-item boundary. A filter can process audio, but its presence alone is not evidence that it will create the requested transition between playlist files.

- Use the OBS audio mixer and configured monitoring device to listen to the source and check its level. The Audio Mixer Guide explains monitoring and checking audio through the signal path.
- Do not treat local monitoring as proof that the audience receives the same final mix. Make an OBS recording or run a private test stream and listen to the output, especially at the point where one playlist item ends and the next begins.
- If you need a precise click-by-click instruction for a per-item fade, first check the installed OBS version and test the actual source and transition behavior. The reviewed official documentation does not establish that such a control exists.
If you meant a fade between scenes
If each video is in a different scene and your goal is to fade as OBS changes scenes, use the scene transition controls and set the transition duration there. Confirm the visual and audio result in a recording or private test stream. That workflow is different from applying an audio fade between items within one VLC playlist.

A community discussion describes audio fade-style choices for Stinger transitions, including fading out to the transition point and fading in, or crossfading. Treat that as community guidance, not proof of a VLC playlist feature; inspect the transition properties in your installed OBS version and test the intended output.
Troubleshooting playlist boundaries
- The videos play in an unexpected order: check that Shuffle Playlist is off and that the playlist is arranged as intended.
- The playlist stops after the last video: check whether Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops or restarts after a scene change: inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior; its documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
- You hear audio locally but are unsure what viewers hear: confirm the final program output with an OBS recording or private test stream rather than relying only on monitoring.
- You cannot find a playlist crossfade setting: the reviewed official playlist documentation does not establish a built-in per-item audio crossfade control. Do not assume the scene Fade setting applies to playlist boundaries.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS running on a home computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
