A copyright match notice does not, by itself, show that silence was matched or that OBS caused the problem. First identify whether YouTube warned or stopped the live stream, or placed a Content ID claim on the archived video; those are different events with different records to check.
First, identify what YouTube reported
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A detected match may trigger a warning and a placeholder image; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube says a Content ID claim on an archived live stream is made after the stream ends, if you choose to archive it. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
| What happened | When and where to check | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Warning or placeholder during the broadcast | Check the live-stream experience and any notice shown in YouTube Studio while the stream is active. | YouTube detected a possible third-party match during live scanning. This alone does not establish that silence was the matched material. |
| Stream interrupted or terminated | Check YouTube Studio’s dashboard for strikes, as YouTube advises when a stream stops. | Interruption is a live enforcement event; it is not the same as a claim on an archived recording. |
| Content ID claim on the archived video | After the stream ends, open the archived video’s claim details in YouTube Studio. | YouTube says archived-stream claims are made after the stream if you choose to archive it. The claim record is the place to look for the claimant and matched content details. |
A notice should be treated as a matching or enforcement event to investigate—not proof that actual silence caused it. The general YouTube guidance does not explain a particular silence-related false-match mechanism, and the available information cannot identify what matched in an individual stream without its Studio record.

What to check in order
- Classify the event. Decide whether you saw a live warning, a placeholder, an interruption or termination, a claim on the archived video, or a strike. Record when it happened and whether the stream was archived.
- Read the Studio record. If the broadcast stopped, check the Studio dashboard for strikes. If the archived video has a claim, open its details and note the matched work, claimant, and segment shown there. Do not infer a match target from the word “silence” alone.
- Review what OBS was actually sending. Inspect the active scene and sources, including audio inputs and any media or browser sources. Check the stream output rather than relying only on what you heard locally. This is a practical configuration check, not a documented diagnosis for a silence-related match; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish that OBS caused the notice or describe a hidden-audio or silence-matching mechanism.
- Verify rights and allowlisting. If you intentionally included licensed third-party material, contact the rights owner and ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a live stream may still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if you have a license.
- Keep evidence before changing the setup. Save the exact Studio notice and claim details, note the affected time, and review the relevant OBS scene and sources. Without those details, the trigger remains unresolved. A mute toggle or OBS setting change cannot be promised to remove a platform copyright claim.
Why silence and OBS are not enough to explain the match
“Silent” can describe what a viewer heard, but it does not identify what YouTube’s notice refers to. The notice may concern a live scan or a later archived-video claim, and only the case-specific Studio record can show the available match details. The reviewed YouTube guidance describes its scanning and enforcement process but does not say that silence itself triggers a copyright match.
