Object-oriented programming (OOP) organizes code around objects that combine state (data) with behavior (operations). A class commonly defines a type and describes how its instances work; inheritance lets a derived class reuse or extend behavior from a base class; and polymorphism lets code call a shared operation on different object types. The details vary by language, so these are useful concepts—not universal implementation rules.

What is object-oriented programming?

OOP is a way to organize software around objects and the classes or other mechanisms used to define them. In the common introductory model, an object groups related state with behavior that operates on that state. Oracle describes an object as “a software bundle of related state and behavior” in its Java tutorial, which is explicitly written for JDK 8 and should be read as a conceptual introduction rather than current Java setup guidance: Oracle: Object-Oriented Programming Concepts.

Objects can cooperate: one object can call another object’s methods, letting a program divide responsibilities among components. OOP is one programming approach, not a guarantee of better performance or a universally superior choice over procedural or functional approaches.

What is the difference between a class and an object?

A class is a definition or type; an object is a particular instance created from that class. Oracle’s Java tutorial uses the blueprint analogy: “A class is a blueprint or prototype from which objects are created.” A class can describe the data and methods its instances support. An object has its own runtime identity and, commonly, its own state.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, a Dog class might describe that dogs have a name and a bark() operation. An object made from the class could represent one dog named “Milo.” “Object” and “instance” are often interchangeable in beginner explanations, though language object models can be more nuanced than the blueprint analogy.

There is another important distinction in Python: a class is itself an object, specifically a type object, and class objects are used to create instance objects. That means “class” and “object” are not mutually exclusive categories in Python; a class can be an object while also serving as the template for its instances. See the Python 3.14 tutorial on classes and the Python 3.14 Programming FAQ.

What is inheritance in OOP?

Inheritance creates a relationship between a base class and a derived class. The derived class can use behavior and attributes available through its base classes, and it can provide its own implementation of a method to override inherited behavior. For instance, a GuideDog class might extend a more general Dog class with additional behavior.

In Python, method and attribute lookup follows the base-class chain; a derived class’s method can override one in a base class. Python also permits a class to have multiple base classes. The details of lookup and inheritance are language-specific; consult the Python classes tutorial for Python’s rules.

Inheritance is useful when a derived type really is a specialized form of its base type and can honor the expectations of code using that base. It is not required for all OOP or for all forms of polymorphism. A shared operation can also be provided through other language mechanisms or conventions.

What is polymorphism in OOP?

Polymorphism means that code can use different concrete object types through a shared expectation or operation. A caller asks for the operation it needs without having to branch on every concrete type.

For example, suppose both a Mailbox and a Document provide a search() method. A caller can invoke obj.search() on either object. Python’s official FAQ uses this shared-method idea to explain polymorphic behavior; in Python this can work through duck typing—the caller relies on the behavior an object provides rather than requiring a particular declared base class. See the Python Programming FAQ.

In Java, polymorphism can be illustrated through a method that accepts a shared superclass type, allowing objects of suitable subclasses to be passed to it. That is a subtype-based example; Oracle’s conceptual lesson is in a legacy Java tutorial context, not a current language-version guide: Oracle: Object-Oriented Programming Concepts. Inheritance can enable polymorphism, but the two terms do not mean the same thing.

Are classes and objects the same in Python and Java?

No. Both languages use classes and instances, but their object models and inheritance rules differ. In Java, Oracle’s introductory material describes a class as a blueprint and an object as its instance. In Python, a class is also itself an object (a type object), and it can create instance objects. The sources below explain these differences at a conceptual level; Oracle’s Java Tutorials page notes that it was written for JDK 8, while Python’s cited tutorial is for Python 3.14.

Question Java Python
What is a class? A class defines a type from which objects are created, in Oracle’s introductory account. Source: Oracle Java Tutorials, written for JDK 8. A class is itself an object/type and is used to create instances. Source: Python 3.14 tutorial.
What inheritance patterns are described? The cited Oracle tutorial describes single implementation inheritance and a common Object root. Source: Oracle Java Tutorials, written for JDK 8. A class can have multiple base classes. Source: Python 3.14 tutorial.
How does overriding or method lookup work? Not stated in the cited Java tutorial at a level suitable for a current Java-version comparison. Source: Oracle Java Tutorials, written for JDK 8. Lookup follows the base-class chain, and a derived method can override a base method. Source: Python 3.14 tutorial.
How is data hiding handled? The cited conceptual material discusses Java access levels, but it is a legacy tutorial and is not a current, version-specific comparison. Source: Oracle Java Tutorials, written for JDK 8. Data hiding in ordinary Python classes relies on convention; Python does not enforce private instance variables in the same way some languages enforce access restrictions. Source: Python 3.14 tutorial.

When should you use OOP concepts?

Use classes and objects when they make related data and operations easier to reason about, and consider inheritance when a genuine base-and-specialization relationship helps organize behavior. For polymorphic code, focus on the operation the caller needs: different objects can support that shared behavior through inheritance, interfaces, or—in Python—compatible methods. Avoid using inheritance merely to share code when the types do not have a meaningful relationship.
