For third-party sign-in in a Hapi application, @hapi/bell can handle the provider authorization flow, while @hapi/cookie can establish the application’s own continuing session. They solve different parts of the job: Bell’s temporary flow state is not a persistent login session. Before choosing Bell, verify that the exact version and provider support the PKCE controls your flow needs; the reviewed Bell documentation does not establish PKCE support.
First decide whether you need OAuth or OpenID Connect
This guide covers a Hapi application acting as an OAuth client: it redirects a user to a third-party provider and handles the callback. It does not cover building an authorization server that issues tokens to other applications.
OAuth 2.0 access tokens authorize access to resource APIs; an access token by itself is not a reliable proof of a user’s identity. If the feature is user sign-in, use OpenID Connect (OIDC), which defines identity claims on top of OAuth 2.0, and validate the ID token for the provider’s issuer, your client’s audience, signature, expiry, and nonce requirements. Bell’s OAuth callback behavior does not, by itself, perform OIDC ID-token validation.
Hapi organizes authentication around schemes and strategies: a scheme defines an authentication method, a strategy configures it, and routes select the strategy they use. See the Hapi authentication tutorial.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose an integration path
| Option | What it provides | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bell plus Cookie | Bell handles the provider OAuth authorization and callback; Cookie provides Hapi cookie-based application sessions. | Confirm PKCE and OIDC support for the exact version and provider. The Bell module page distinguishes its temporary authorization-flow state from a continuing app session; see also the Cookie module documentation. |
| Dedicated OIDC client or plugin | A client built for OIDC may handle more of the identity protocol than an OAuth callback plugin. | Hapi’s community plugin directory lists hapi-openid-connect as implementing an OIDC authorization flow. The listing does not establish current maintenance, Node.js or Hapi compatibility, PKCE behavior, issuer discovery, or ID-token validation; assess those before adoption. |
| Custom Hapi scheme or direct protocol client | Allows an application to integrate a chosen OAuth/OIDC client with Hapi’s route-authentication model. | Your team assumes more responsibility for the protocol flow, PKCE, callback protection, token validation, maintenance, and session integration. Hapi documents custom schemes in its authentication tutorial. |
Build the flow around the provider and its security requirements
- Select the protocol and flow. For delegated API access or sign-in, use the authorization-code flow. For sign-in, choose OIDC and validate its ID token; do not use an arbitrary access token as an identity assertion. Do not use the resource-owner password grant: RFC 9700 says it must not be used.
- Check provider requirements before wiring routes. Confirm the authorization and token endpoints, exact redirect URI to register, supported scopes, token-endpoint client authentication, and support for PKCE using
S256. Provider behavior varies; Bell permits provider endpoint and scope configuration in its API documentation. - Configure a Hapi strategy and callback route. Register Bell as a plugin, then configure a strategy with the provider, server-side client credentials, and callback location. Assign the strategy to the callback route. Bell documents custom endpoints, scopes, callback location, and temporary state-cookie behavior in its API documentation. Its callback example can accept GET or POST depending on provider configuration; match the route to the provider’s response mode.
- Protect the browser transaction. Check that the callback’s state matches the value associated with the initiating browser request, or use another supported, protocol-defined transaction-bound CSRF defense. Reject mismatched, expired, replayed, or unsolicited callbacks. RFC 9700 requires clients to prevent CSRF at redirect endpoints.
- Create the local account and session. After a valid provider response, map the verified identity to a local account or create one under your account-linking rules. Then issue the app’s own session cookie. Bell’s temporary state cookie protects the authorization transaction; it does not keep the user signed in. Hapi’s Cookie scheme supports cookie-based session authentication.
- Protect credentials and tokens. Keep client secrets in server-side secret configuration, use HTTPS in production, and do not log authorization codes or bearer tokens. Store provider tokens only if the product needs later API access. RFC 9700 recommends restricting tokens to intended audiences and resources and treating access tokens as sensitive secrets rather than storing or transferring them in plaintext: RFC 9700.
Resolve the PKCE question before relying on Bell
RFC 9700, published by the IETF in January 2025, is the current OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice among the sources cited here. It says public clients must use PKCE in authorization-code flows and recommends PKCE for confidential clients. It recommends S256, which does not expose the verifier in the authorization request. See RFC 9700.
The reviewed official Bell API documentation describes OAuth providers, callbacks, credentials, and temporary state cookies, but does not document PKCE. That does not prove PKCE cannot be added or that every provider integration lacks it; it means the documentation does not establish support. Check the actual package version and provider behavior before selecting Bell for a flow that requires PKCE. If support is not demonstrable, choose an OIDC/OAuth client that explicitly supports the required flow and controls.

Use exact registered redirect URIs, request only scopes needed for the feature, and validate token properties appropriate to the token type. Avoid implicit access-token-in-URL patterns. For OIDC, validate the ID token’s issuer, audience, signature, expiry, and nonce against the provider’s requirements; for access tokens, enforce the resource and audience restrictions relevant to the API.
