Choose Wordle if you like using clues to narrow down one hidden word. Choose Connections if you prefer spotting several relationships across a board of words, including misleading overlaps and wordplay. Neither is universally harder: the better fit depends on how you enjoy solving puzzles.

How Wordle and Connections differ

What to compare Wordle Connections
Goal Find one hidden five-letter word. Sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme.
How you get feedback After each guess, colors show whether letters are in the answer and whether they are in the right positions. You submit a group of four; the game indicates whether it matches an intended category.
Main challenge Use letter clues to eliminate possibilities before you run out of guesses. Identify the intended relationship when several words may seem to fit more than one group.
Allowance for errors Six guesses, according to TechRadar’s Wordle gameplay guide. Up to four mistakes, according to TechRadar’s Connections gameplay guide.

What playing Wordle is like

One answer, narrowed down by clues

In Wordle, you enter a five-letter word and have up to six guesses to find the answer. Green means a letter is correct and in the right position; yellow means the letter appears in the answer but belongs elsewhere; gray means it is absent. Each result gives you information for choosing the next guess.

The appeal is a fairly systematic loop: make a guess, interpret the letter clues, then narrow the remaining possibilities. If you enjoy deduction with explicit feedback, Wordle’s single-target format is likely to suit you.

What playing Connections is like

Four relationships to uncover

Connections presents 16 words. The aim is to identify four groups of four whose members share a theme. The New York Times Help Center describes the game as finding themes between words; its Connections help page also refers to a mistake histogram.

The challenge is deciding which connection the puzzle intends. Words can appear to belong together for different reasons, and wordplay or homophones may disguise a category. TechRadar’s Connections gameplay guide describes categories of differing difficulty and an allowance of up to four mistakes.

If you like categorizing, making lateral associations, and weighing competing interpretations, Connections offers more of that kind of thinking than Wordle’s letter-by-letter deduction.

Which game is harder?

There is no established universal difficulty winner. The games test different skills: Wordle limits the number of guesses for one answer, while Connections asks you to find four intended relationships among words that may support tempting alternatives. Familiarity with vocabulary, associations, and deduction can make either game feel easier. The cited gameplay guides describe mechanics, not results from a controlled comparison of difficulty.

Which one should you play?

  • Pick Wordle if you enjoy a sequence of informed guesses and clear feedback about letters and their positions.
  • Pick Connections if you enjoy grouping ideas, spotting less obvious links, and interpreting wordplay.
  • Try both if you want two distinct daily word-game experiences. The NYT Help Center lists both among the daily games available without a Games subscription.

Do you need a Games subscription?

No subscription is required for the daily versions of Wordle and Connections, according to the NYT Games Subscription Help Center page. A subscription is relevant if you want access to the broader Games collection or eligible companion tools such as Wordle Bot and Cross Bot. The Help Center also says signing in to an NYT account makes progress, statistics, and streaks available across devices; without an account, progress is stored locally and may be lost when switching devices.
