In 2007, NXP and its T3G partners demonstrated that an active voice call could move from China’s TD-SCDMA 3G network to a GSM 2G network without dropping. The test linked two different radio-access systems through a Release 4 core network, an important step toward practical TD-SCDMA/GSM phones.
What the handover demonstration proved
The demonstration showed voice continuity as a call moved from a TD-SCDMA Release 4 radio network to a GSM network operated by Nokia Siemens. Huawei supplied the Release 4 core network that connected the two radio systems. In practical terms, the call could continue when the user moved out of TD-SCDMA coverage and into GSM coverage, rather than requiring the user to hang up and redial.
A report published April 19, 2007 described the trial. The U.S. Government Printing Office later cited NXP Newswire’s announcement, “First TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE Automatic Handover Achieved by T3G and NXP,” dated June 6, 2007. The milestone concerned automatic handover for an active voice call; it was not simply a phone supporting both network standards separately.

TD-SCDMA and GSM are separate radio-access technologies. A handset needs to communicate using the destination network’s radio system, while the network infrastructure coordinates the transition so the existing call can continue. In this demonstration, the two radio systems were joined through a Release 4 core network.

- MM6108-EKH05-05US WiFi / 802.11 Development Tool
- Starting connection: the call used the TD-SCDMA Release 4 radio network.
- Destination connection: the call moved to a Nokia Siemens GSM network.
- Network connection: Huawei supplied the Release 4 core network linking those radio-access systems.
The published account establishes the systems and participants, but does not provide handover latency, call-drop statistics, coverage thresholds, or a detailed signaling sequence. Those performance figures should not be inferred from the fact that the demonstration succeeded.
What T3G and NXP contributed
T3G Technology Co. Ltd. was formed in January 2003 by Datang Mobile, Philips Semiconductors and Samsung Electronics to design and license mobile-device system solutions. Motorola joined in January 2005. NXP’s annual-report material records NXP’s 2006 stake in T3G as 42.7%.

The radio-network demonstration also involved Huawei and Nokia Siemens. They should not be confused with the T3G membership: Huawei supplied the core network for the trial, while Nokia Siemens supplied the GSM network.
From interoperability trial to multi-mode phones
The handover work sat alongside development of multi-mode handset technology. NXP’s 2007 annual report described a showcase with Samsung and T3G as “the world’s first TD-SCDMA HSDPA/EDGE multi-mode mobile phone architecture.” A May 29, 2008 product report identified the related T3G7208 platform in Samsung’s SGH-L288 handset.

- EXTENSIVE I/O CAPABILITY: 2 USB ports, both 480 MBit/sec; 3 CAN Bus (1 with CAN FD); 31 PWM pins; 40 digital pins, all interrupt capable; 14 analog pins, 2 ADCs on chip; 2 I2S Digital Audio
- HEADER PINS INCLUDED: Includes a 40-pin male header that can be broken or cut to the appropriate length using a wire cutter or pliers and soldered onto the microcontroller, giving you the flexibility to choose how to connect the Teensy to your circuitry
The product report listed a downlink capability of 384 kbps and an uplink capability of 128 kbps for the T3G7208 platform. It also said the platform supported automatic voice switching among TD-SCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE. These figures describe the platform as reported in 2008; they are not a measure of the 2007 handover trial’s performance.

TD-SCDMA was a 3G system developed for China, while GSM was an established 2G standard. Demonstrating an active-call transition between them addressed a practical compatibility problem: a dual-mode phone would be more useful if it could retain a call when TD-SCDMA coverage was unavailable but GSM remained available.

The achievement was a historical interoperability milestone, not evidence that every TD-SCDMA handset or operator network supported the same handover, or that the technology remains available in current retail phones. The evidence identifies the successful demonstration and later platform context, but does not establish broad commercial deployment or present-day network support.
