To choose between them, first confirm that your computer supports the drive’s interface and form factor. Then compare the specific models’ capacity, workload-relevant performance, terabytes written (TBW) rating, and warranty.
NVMe vs. SATA at a glance
| Question | What the cited manufacturer information shows | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Samsung lists up to 2,900 MB/s sequential read and 1,300 MB/s sequential write for the 250 GB Samsung 980 NVMe SSD. Its January 2018 datasheet lists up to 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write for the 860 EVO mSATA SATA SSD. (Samsung 980 specifications; Samsung 860 EVO mSATA datasheet) | This is not a controlled comparison: the drives differ in model, generation, capacity, and product configuration. The figures are vendor maximum specifications, not guaranteed application speeds. |
| SATA speed limit | Samsung’s 2018 860 EVO mSATA datasheet describes 600 MB/s as SATA’s theoretical interface bandwidth limit. | The interface limit is not a promise that a SATA drive sustains that speed in real use. |
| Endurance and warranty | Samsung’s warranty table gives TBW and coverage terms for specific models and capacities. For its listed 970 EVO and 970 EVO Plus capacities from 250 GB to 2 TB, it shows five years or the relevant TBW limit, whichever comes first. | Those figures do not rank all NVMe drives against all SATA drives, predict a failure date, or establish a universal lifespan in years. |
| Reliability | The cited material provides product specifications and warranty policy, not a comparative field-failure study. | It does not show that NVMe or SATA has a lower failure rate as an interface family. |
Does NVMe make a difference in performance?
It can, especially for workloads that move large amounts of data or make frequent storage requests. NVMe is a storage protocol designed for PCIe connections; SATA SSDs use the SATA interface. The cited Samsung examples illustrate the potential sequential-speed gap: the 250 GB Samsung 980 lists maximum sequential speeds of 2,900 MB/s read and 1,300 MB/s write, while Samsung’s 2018 860 EVO mSATA datasheet lists 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Samsung notes that system hardware and configuration can affect performance.
These examples should not be read as a universal benchmark or a guarantee that every task will feel proportionally faster. Sequential figures describe large, continuous transfers; everyday application and boot performance also depends on the workload, system, and drive. The 860 EVO document says SATA’s theoretical bandwidth limit is 600 MB/s, but an interface ceiling is not the same as a drive’s sustained real-world result.
Which lasts longer, NVMe or SATA?
The cited manufacturer information does not establish that one interface lasts longer. Longevity depends on the specific drive and how it is used; the interface name alone is not enough to make a lifespan prediction. The sources also do not provide a universal number of years for an SSD or comparative NVMe-versus-SATA field failure rates.

What TBW tells you
TBW means terabytes written. It is a model- and capacity-specific endurance figure that Samsung includes in its limited warranty terms. Samsung says warranty coverage lasts for the stated time period or until the TBW limit, whichever comes first. Its policy also says documented endurance test results comply with JEDEC JESD218. That testing context does not turn TBW into an exact failure threshold or calendar-life estimate.
As one illustration, Samsung’s warranty table lists 150 TBW for 250 GB versions of the 970 EVO and 970 EVO Plus, 300 TBW at 500 GB, 600 TBW at 1 TB, and 1,200 TBW at 2 TB; each is covered for five years or the applicable TBW limit, whichever comes first. These are figures for those named Samsung models and capacities, not a rule for NVMe drives generally or a valid comparison with SATA as a whole. Check the exact model, capacity, and purchase-region warranty terms before buying. (Samsung SSD Product Warranty policy)

Warranty is not data recovery
A warranty defines coverage under its terms; it does not promise that a drive will fail exactly at the warranty boundary, and it is not a substitute for backups. Samsung’s warranty policy explicitly excludes data recovery costs. Keep another copy of important files, regardless of whether the drive is NVMe or SATA.
Is NVMe more reliable than SATA?
The cited evidence cannot answer that with a general yes or no. It is Samsung manufacturer documentation: it gives specifications and warranty terms for particular products, but no comparative field-failure rates for NVMe and SATA drives. Reliability comparisons require evidence about specific models and conditions, not just interface categories.

Use a drive’s warranty and endurance rating as part of a model-level decision, not proof that one interface family is more dependable. For important data, maintain independent backups rather than relying on a warranty or TBW figure.

A drive must match both the computer’s supported interface and its physical form factor. M.2 describes a physical form factor, not a guarantee that a slot supports NVMe: an M.2 slot may support particular interface types, generations, or capacities. - Look up the host’s specifications. Find the supported interface (SATA or PCIe/NVMe), connector and form factor, and any capacity or generation limits.
- Match the drive to the slot. Confirm that the drive’s physical size and keying fit, and that the host supports its protocol. For example, Samsung’s 980 specification identifies it as an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 drive using NVMe 1.4. That does not mean every M.2 slot can use it.
- Compare specific models. After compatibility is confirmed, weigh capacity, the performance your workload needs, TBW, warranty terms, and current price. Prices change, so compare them at the time of purchase.
A compatible PCIe/NVMe system can use an NVMe M.2 SSD; a SATA drive can be a suitable replacement where the host supports SATA and the drive’s form factor matches. Samsung’s cited 860 EVO document is specifically for an mSATA SATA product, not a universal reference for every SATA connector or enclosure.

How to choose for your workload
- Choose an NVMe model when your system supports it and you need the higher transfer capability for large file transfers or other storage-heavy work. Confirm the exact drive’s specifications rather than assuming every NVMe model has the same speed.
- Choose a SATA model when it is the compatible option for your system, or when its capacity and performance meet your needs. A SATA drive’s interface is slower in maximum throughput than the cited PCIe/NVMe example, but compatibility and model-level value matter more than the interface label alone.
- For either type, compare the exact capacity’s TBW and warranty, then keep backups of important files.
