In July 2018, HotHardware reported that NVIDIA was stockpiling roughly one million next-generation GeForce GTX 11 GPUs for a possible launch later that year. NVIDIA never publicly confirmed that inventory figure in the sources available here. What the company did announce was its first Turing-based GeForce gaming lineup under a different name: GeForce RTX, beginning with the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and RTX 2070.

What was the GTX 11 stockpile report?

On July 5, 2018, HotHardware reported that NVIDIA was said to be stockpiling roughly one million next-generation GTX 11 GPUs ahead of a possible Q3 or Q4 2018 launch. The quantity and timing were reported claims, not an NVIDIA announcement. HotHardware’s article referred to earlier reports and an alleged on-camera comment by a Lenovo representative, but the report did not provide direct NVIDIA confirmation of the stockpile.

Accordingly, “roughly one million” should be treated as HotHardware’s estimate, not as verified inventory data. The available evidence also does not establish whether a stockpile of that size existed; the later product announcements show what NVIDIA launched, but do not by themselves prove or disprove the earlier inventory claim. What did NVIDIA announce instead?

NVIDIA’s official announcements established the Turing product timeline and the names it actually used. They did not describe the GeForce gaming launch as GTX 11.

Did the rumored GTX 11 launch happen?

Not under that name in NVIDIA’s official GeForce launch announcement. The company’s August 20, 2018 release called the first Turing gaming cards GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and RTX 2070. The July rumor therefore anticipated a new generation and a late-2018 window, but its GTX 11 naming did not match the official GeForce products NVIDIA announced.

This distinction matters: the launch record can confirm product names and announcement dates, while the stockpile remains a separate, unconfirmed claim. A forecast that resembles the timing of a later announcement is not proof that every part of the original report—including its quantity—was accurate.

What did NVIDIA claim about Turing’s performance?

NVIDIA described Turing as delivering “6x more performance than its predecessor.” That is the company’s own launch claim, not a universal independent benchmark result; it should not be read as a result applying to every game, workload, or configuration. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang also said at the August 20 announcement, “Turing opens up a new golden age of gaming, with realism only possible with ray tracing, which most people thought was still a decade away.” This was launch rhetoric from NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, rather than an independent technical assessment.
