For NVIDIA Wayland on Arch, install the repository driver that matches your GPU, make sure NVIDIA DRM kernel mode setting is active, and use a compositor with a compatible graphics-buffer path. On current Arch NVIDIA packages, DRM modesetting is enabled by default: verify it with cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset; the expected result is Y. If you use a hybrid laptop, test the integrated-GPU and NVIDIA render paths separately.
1. Identify your NVIDIA GPU and choose the matching Arch driver
Start by identifying the graphics device and its bound kernel driver:
lspci -k -d ::03xx
Use the GPU family shown in that output to select the corresponding driver package from the Arch Linux Wiki’s NVIDIA package guidance. Choose an Arch repository package rather than the installer downloaded from NVIDIA: packages managed by pacman let Arch coordinate driver updates with kernel updates. The right package depends on the GPU family, so do not choose a driver branch solely because its name sounds newer or more suitable for Wayland.
The important choice is a driver compatible with your GPU and current Arch setup. The available information here does not establish a universal rule for choosing between the nvidia and nvidia-open branches; use the current ArchWiki guidance for your GPU rather than treating them as interchangeable.

2. Enable and verify DRM kernel mode setting
Wayland compositors need kernel mode setting (KMS) to manage displays. Current Arch nvidia-utils enables NVIDIA DRM modesetting and framebuffer device support by default. Check the active setting after boot:
cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
A result of Y means modesetting is active. If you are running an older NVIDIA driver that does not enable it by default, set nvidia_drm.modeset=1 as a kernel module parameter, then reboot and check again. Do not add the parameter automatically to a current setup that already reports Y.

When early module loading may help
If startup ordering causes display initialization problems, loading nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm, and nvidia_drm early through the initramfs may help. This is not a routine requirement: the ArchWiki warns that early loading can break hibernation because video-memory preservation is enabled.
3. Use a compositor with the modern NVIDIA buffer path
Wayland is a display protocol, not a desktop environment. A compositor—such as the one provided by GNOME or Plasma—implements the session and must work with the driver’s graphics-buffer API. For modern NVIDIA Wayland setups, that API is generally GBM (Generic Buffer Manager). NVIDIA drivers 495 and newer support GBM as well as the older EGLStreams path; GBM is the broadly supported modern option. Modern Mutter and KWin use GBM with supported NVIDIA drivers.

That means old instructions to force EGLStreams or set obsolete environment variables can be counterproductive when your compositor already uses GBM. Prefer the compositor’s supported default unless its current documentation specifically calls for another configuration.
4. Check Explicit Sync if the display flickers
Flickering or frames appearing out of order can be a compatibility issue rather than a sign that KMS is disabled. The ArchWiki identifies two relevant conditions: NVIDIA drivers earlier than version 555, and compositors that do not implement linux-drm-syncobj-v1. Either can be associated with these artifacts in native Wayland and Xwayland applications.

When investigating flicker, establish the NVIDIA driver generation and check whether your compositor supports linux-drm-syncobj-v1. Treat Explicit Sync support as a compatibility checkpoint; do not assume that changing a random environment variable or switching to EGLStreams is the fix.
5. Use PRIME render offload on a hybrid laptop
On a hybrid laptop, the integrated GPU can drive the display while selected programs render on the discrete NVIDIA GPU. This is PRIME render offload. Arch’s nvidia-prime package supplies the prime-run helper for launching a program on NVIDIA.

A Wayland desktop can run native Wayland applications and X11 applications through Xwayland. Those are separate graphics paths, so test one native Wayland application and one X11 application independently. If the compositor and native applications work but an X11 program is slow, investigate Xwayland rather than assuming the whole Wayland session is broken.
NVIDIA drivers earlier than version 470 lack hardware-accelerated Xwayland support, according to the ArchWiki. That limitation can explain poor X11-application performance even when the compositor itself is functioning. Xwayland compatibility should therefore be checked separately from native Wayland support.
Quick Recap
Verification and troubleshooting checklist
- Modesetting: run
cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset; expectY. - Wrong GPU on a hybrid laptop: launch the application with
prime-runand inspect renderer messages usingjournalctl -b 0 --grep "renderer for". - Flicker or out-of-order frames: check whether the NVIDIA driver is earlier than 555 and whether the compositor implements
linux-drm-syncobj-v1. - Only X11 applications are slow: troubleshoot their Xwayland path separately; native Wayland success does not establish accelerated Xwayland support.
- Display startup or resume trouble: investigate module-loading order cautiously; early-loading NVIDIA modules can affect hibernation.
- Conflicting older setup instructions: avoid forcing EGLStreams or obsolete environment variables when the compositor uses GBM.
